About Saint Augustine:
Saint Augustine is a city in St. John’s County located in the northeastern part of Florida. The city and surrounding urban area has a population of just over 70,000. Saint Augustine is a city that is rich in history as it holds the claim to fame of being the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the continental United States. Its history dates back to the days of Ponce de Leon when it was first settled in 1565. Colonial America actually began here 55 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock and 42 years ahead of the Jamestown Settlement.
Saint Augustine has a humid subtropical climate and is known to have an inordinate amount of sunshine. It will average 2900 hours of sunshine every year, making it one of the sunniest places in the United States. Temperatures average in the mid 60s during the coldest months of the winter and into the low 90s during the warmer summer months.
Nature lovers in the area are continuously drawn to Anastasia State Park, a 1,600-acre Florida State park found just off the Atlantic coast across Matazas Bay. Just a stone’s throw from Saint Augustine’s downtown, this park is an oasis of lush greenery and sandy beaches that also offers a variety of wildlife, birds, and plants. This is an ideal destination for anyone who loves birdwatching, camping, surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, or just soaking up some sun.
Saint Augustine visitors have their choice of beautiful municipal parks to enjoy including the Nelmar Terrace Park which is a pocket park offering a scenic vista for the Nelmar Terrace neighborhood. There’s also Zora Neal Hurston Memorial Park which honors one of the areas more notable writers to come out of the Harlem Renaissance. And then there’s Davenport Park which features a restored antique carrousel and several amenities for children to explore and enjoy.
Of course, no trip to the Saint Augustine area would be complete without visiting Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. Located at the original site where Ponce de Leon first explored the area in 1513, the park features 15 waterfront acres for you to experience.
One of Saint Augustine’s cultural hubs is the Saint Augustine Amphitheater, first opened in 1965 to commemorate the city’s 400th anniversary. The amphitheatre is the site of incredible outdoor concerts and live performances which run throughout the year.
While there are numerous golfing destinations across the entire state of Florida, Saint Augustine offers a special draw to golf enthusiasts everywhere as it is the site of the World Golf Hall of Fame. First opened in 1998, The world Golf Hall of Fame is the only of its kind in professional sports that honors men and women equally.
