Saint Augustine is a city that is rich in history as it holds the claim to fame of being the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the continental United States. Its history dates back to the days of Ponce de Leon when it was first settled in 1565. Colonial America actually began here 55 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock and 42 years ahead of the Jamestown Settlement.
Saint Augustine has a humid subtropical climate and is known to have an inordinate amount of sunshine. It will average 2900 hours of sunshine every year, making it one of the sunniest places in the United States. Nature lovers in the area are continuously drawn to Anastasia State Park, a 1,600-acre Florida State park found just off the Atlantic coast across Matazas Bay. Just a stone’s throw from Saint Augustine’s downtown, this park is an oasis of lush greenery and sandy beaches that also offers a variety of wildlife, birds, and plants. And then there’s Davenport Park which features a restored antique carrousel and several amenities for children to explore and enjoy.
Of course, no trip to the Saint Augustine area would be complete without visiting Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. Located at the original site where Ponce de Leon first explored the area in 1513, the park features 15 waterfront acres for you to experience.
One of Saint Augustine’s cultural hubs is the Saint Augustine Amphitheater, first opened in 1965 to commemorate the city’s 400th anniversary. The amphitheatre is the site of incredible outdoor concerts and live performances which run throughout the year.
