Jackson is a significantly diverse city in the state of Georgia. It serves as the county seat of the historic Butts County. The city, which has a small-town ambiance, sits on a total area of about 6.3 square miles, which is almost entirely made up of land. It lies about 46 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta and 9 miles southwest of Georgia's center of population. The arrival of the first train there in May 1882 kicked off an era of growth. By the 20th century, industrial textile mills became the major provider of jobs to the locals. The city was a bedroom community by the 1970s.
