Douglasville has an area of approximately 22 square miles, delimited by Lithia Springs, Hiram and Villa Rica.

The city was founded in 1874, when the railroad reached that part of the land. It was formerly known as Skint Chestnut, due to a big tree used by the Native American Indians to landmark the area. The tree had its bark stripped in order to stand out when someone was looking for it - thus the name. The town only changed to Douglasville a few months after its foundation, named after Senator Stephen A. Douglas.

Despite being so close to Atlanta, the city is not an expensive place to live, with a cost of living 12% lower than the average when compared to other cities in the United States. The average annual income per family in Douglasville is approximately $53,000.

When it comes to education, the city is served by the Douglas County school system, which has 21 elementary schools, like Arbor Station Elementary School and Chapel Hill Elementary School;eight middle schools, including Chestnut Log Middle School and five high schools, like Douglas County High School and Chapel Hill High School.
