Catlett Gap Historic Homestead
Cross Junction, Virginia, United States
The Catlett Gap Homestead is nestled in a valley approximately half way between Winchester VA, and Berkley Springs WVA. Pet friendly, and with a shooting range; The cabin pre-dates the civil war and was a homestead deeded to the Catlett family; some of whom still live in the area. At one point the cabin is mentioned in records of confederate troop movements, and apparently Stonewall Jackson himself spent a night inside the cabin during a snow storm. But there are certain creature comforts such as a smart TV, Wi-Fi, HVAC, fireplace, BBQ pit, fire pit, satellite radio, bathroom, computer station, and fully stocked modern kitchen. Outside burning is only permitted in the camp fire, or the BBQ area and only when risk of forest fire is low. It has 2 bedrooms and two couches, and can sleep up to 9 with 2 guests on an air mattress. Other in-door amenities include a wood stove, a small library of the local wildlife, and other classic novels, as well as an X box and a DVD library of nearly 300 movies. And dozens of board games. There is also a covered front porch with rocking chairs and a dart board. And there are 3 ponds near the house, two of which are stocked with catfish. Catch and release fishing is permitted. No license required. Because of the local area, there are lots of fun activities to do year round. For example, in the summer, fishing is great and there are many places near by. In the winter, Whitetail ski resort is only 50 minutes away, and staying at the cabin and driving there is much cheaper than staying at the resort. Cacapon State Park is only 5 miles away and has hiking trails as well as horse back riding, fishing and swimming. Berkley Springs has spas and antique malls as well as good restaurants. Winchester has a zoo that specializes in exotic animals. There is a Food Lion as well as a gourmet butcher shop in Berkley Springs, and there is a new super Walmart in Winchester, depending on which way you go. Please note, renters must be at least 21 years of age to book this property. Also please note that the staircase is not handicap accessible, however the bathroom is.brbrAnimal Disclaimer: Given that this is a pre-civil war log cabin you are bound to encounter pests such as bees, fruit flies, ants, and house flies in the summer and stink bugs year round. These are virtually impossible to control. Fly swatter is on the fridge. There is ant/wasp spray in the bottom left cupboard. Bring bug spray in the summer for mosquitoes. You may see the occasional mouse or black snake. But you also may see the occasional box turtle or toad. Toads like to hang out on the patio at night in the summer. Think of it as glamping. If you don't like bugs or animals, don't come. :-)
