The house is incredible and was the perfect space for our family. We had 10 adults and 5 kids, for part of the week we had 12 adults and 5 kids. We did not have to use any of the pull out couches and had an extra queen bed most of the week. Rhonda was excellent and contacted us prior to arrival to let us know there was a boil water advisory for Avon so luckily we were able to buy our water before we got there. The city had it fixed the day we got there and it was cleared up by Monday. There are so many chairs for the porch and even more for the beach in the tiki room. We made good use of the many beach toys she had available. We spent a good bit of time at the ocean right down the street, or the sound which was right across the highway, we were super close to both. My family was thankful to have a space to get together with our parents and grandparents for the first time since COVID. There were a number of nets to go catch crabs at night which was one of the coolest things my kids have ever done. Avon is incredible and so much less crowded than the Walmart beaches to the south.
Let me say that Rhonda is a wonderfully attentive host. The Hideaway was clean when we arrived, just waiting for a new week of memories. It felt like a home. I only regret packing so much because The Hideaway really has everything you need: kitchen is stocked with dishes, cookware, flatware; laundry/storage room has beach chairs, sand toys, corn hole, giant Jenga, coolers, another sink & refrigerator (which proved super convenient!); living room has board games, puzzles, and cards... The kids really loved the deck & hammock. The walk to the beach is a short one and the Hideaway also provides two wheelbarrows/wagons to haul your things. And when you want a quick, sweet treat, Dairy Queen is a quick walk across the main road! Due to covid restrictions, we did have to bring our own linens, but no big deal. Basically, we could have came with just our clothes, linens, and groceries, and we would have been set. Highly recommend The Hideaway for your family getaway.
We stayed during Memorial Day weekend and had such an amazing time. The house is spacious and the patio was a favorite place to relax and hang out. It’s an easy walk to the beach and all the available beach equipment provided with the rental came in handy. There is an outdoor shower that was perfect for sandy kids. The place is great and I highly recommend it.
We were a large group of great grandparents, grand parents, my husband, our 5 kids, my sister, her husband and 5 kids. Kids aged from 13 years -2 months old. The fenced in gated patio was perfect to keep kids contained. There was plenty of room for everyone to sleep and hangout. Host provided a variety of board games and outdoor games. She also had all the beach equipment we could need. The tiki bar area provided and extra fridge and storage. The outdoor grill/kitchen was a great. 5 min walk to the beach. It was the perfect family vacation! Will definitely book again!
Firstly, I was surprised by how accurate the pictures were to the actual property, the only draw back was that the pictures seemed a little roomier than it actually was. The owners were really responsive and easy to get a hold of. That being said the property, on the surface, looked clean but once you actually settled in you start to notice how much more cleaning it needs for instance when the furniture were slightly moved you can see how dusty the area around it is. I laid down on the couch downstairs when we first got there and started feeling itchy a couple seconds later. The bar room downstairs was also more or less a storage closet with washer/dryer and a sink. The most unkempt area. The light over the sink area in the kitchen was out when we arrived and I notified the owner, then she had me try and replace/fix it also suggesting me to go buy one if I didn't mind. Thought that request was odd but I brushed it off and told her it wouldn't be necessary and we can make due with a dead bulb, this bulb was a huge one by the way. The kitchen also had a lack of usable cutting boards and knives, we luckily brought our own since we were told to bring our own sheets. That was also another odd part, bringing our own sheets, blankets etc. Or if we used the ones there we were required to wash and clean them? I'm not sure what the jobs of the cleaners are if not to cleanup after each guests. I understand cleaning up after people who've wrecked the place but if simply cleaning the sheets is out of their scope of work I'm not sure they're worth hiring. We also noticed one of the pullout couches were improperly handled and the hinges were dislocated, luckily my brother was apt enough to put the hinges back and got it working. All in all there were too many small things that we noticed and too many rules to the house, kind of like how another reviewer had stated, it seemed like they didn't actually like to have guests in their house. The purpose of a vacation is to escape your everyday routine do something relaxing and not worry too much about chores or house rules. With that, I think the stay was not worth what we paid for it.
Honestly, this just didn't feel like it was worth the money we paid. You might be fooled by the listing that this is a large house - it isn't. I wouldn't recommend squeezing 20 people here - 10, tops. Also, every other rental house I've stayed in has managed to figure out how to provide sheets and towels - not only did they not do that, but all the little things you appreciate in a rental house (paper towels in the kitchen, soap in the bathtub, a sponge to wipe down counters, some tupperware to store your leftovers) are missing. If you like to cook, you will find the cookware sadly lacking (lots of rust - although there were plenty of plates and silverware). There are many onerous rules posted everywhere, which just makes you feel like the owners don't actually like having guests in their house. Do not be fooled by the references to the tiki area - it's literally a large storage closet, with some stools outside the windows. The living room and kitchen are updated, but everything else feels very dated. I do wonder how often they wash the blankets on the beds (and while the house was clean on the surface, it could really use a deep clean). That said, the downstairs apartment was ideal for social distancing with my family, as was the covered porch area, and we did appreciate the games and beach toys that were available to use. It it had been cheaper, I would not have been bothered as much - you get what you pay for. At this price point, however, I was not impressed.
Overall had a great time, though the house had a horrible smell upon arrival (trash was left in the house), and the outdoor bar smelled like fish the entire week - we were unable to get rid of the smell. House is nice with a modern, updated kitchen. You can certainly fit 20 people as advertised, but it was way more cramped than anticipated, even with 13 guests.
Owner was very responsive and helpful, house located in a quite peaceful neighborhood with close beach access. Had a great stay, would recommend to any one.
Excellent stay. I would recommend to others looking for a fun family vacation or with a group of friends
Our week at this house was everything we could’ve asked for in our vacation: the price was reasonable, the sleeping situation was comfortable for everyone, and the house and surrounding area had plenty of activities to keep us entertained. We spent most of our time on the beach, which is only a short 2-3 minute walk from the property. The owner was kind to us throughout the weeks stay and made the experience much less of a hassle through useful tips about the house. The biggest problem we faced in our house hunt was finding a house that would host our group (which contained all college kids). The owner was kind enough to let our group stay and it paid off for us greatly. I would definitely recommend this house to any younger renters looking for a good time.
Great location and owner is super responsive! Thanks
We enjoyed our stay at the Avon house. There was a ton of sleeping space and the outside tiki area was our favorite and was awesome. We spent most of our time outside in the tiki area. We wished that there weren’t neighbors on all sides of us because we had very little parking space and had to constantly monitor our noise. The walk to the beach was short and it was nice to be so close. I will say that the pictures did make the rooms and living space seem much larger than they were but overall, we didn’t spend much time inside the house anyway.
Our group of 9 fit more than comfortably. Walk to the beach is short and the beach was not crowded at all! Rhonda was extremely responsive and called someone to help us with a jammed lock. Overall great place and we had a great time!
Although there were some upkeep issues with the house, there was nothing that altered my group’s ability to have a great time, not even an awkward week of weather. The decks are a fantastic place to hang out at all hours of the day. Enough beds for the whole group with the living room/kitchen providing a great dining location. Maybe not the most pristine house on Hatteras Island, but a fantastic venue for a week getaway.
Loved the deck space down below, so much entertaining room! Short walk to the beach, great location!
This rental is extremely close to the beach. The Tiki area makes it stand out amongst other properties for sure. It was also really nice having access to beach equipment, washer dryer, and central air.
Rhonda went above and beyond to help us make our experience at her home a wonderful memory! Fantastic open floor plan with the open kitchen/dining/living room area made it very easy to entertain from our 1 year old to our 82 year old family members. The porch/patio area is well laid out. Many late night hours spent enjoying our family time, be it meals, games and relaxation. The beach amenities saved us the expense and much needed luggage space in our vehicles. The Cornhole game made for a lot of fun and fierce competition!! Thanks for the wonderful experience!
We really enjoyed ourselves at Rhonda’s place. It was a short walk down the street to the beach. The beach carts she provided were great. Right across the street from Dairy Queen so the kids loved that. Also a very close drive to the food lion which was great. Rhonda was great with Communication and check in was a breeze.
The house was pleasant. It wasn't perfect but that's ok we had tons of kids. We had some issues, dirty socks, and swimsuit bottoms left behind from previous tenants. Instead of raise a fuss we corrected things ourselves. The rules did make us feel anxious all week, and we did our best but ultimately we left feeling like something would be found wrong. I understand the purpose of them but found some things ridiculous like taking part of our deposit if a blanket was on the wrong shelf. Overall we had a pretty good time though. I'm not sure if we will be back yet, I guess we will see.
We all loved the location of this property! It was a very short walk to the beach which made it convenient for eating lunch. We also all enjoyed the outdoor showers since none of us like having sand in the house . The house itself was as listed and the downstairs deck area was a great hangout spot!
Great location, close to the beach, roomy house. Had all the amenities you could think of beach chairs, kayaks, fully stocked kitchen etc. Make sure to throughly read rules of the house and follow them exactly especially rinsing all sand off before entering the house.
Lots of room to spread out. Great underneath deck for hanging out.
The hideaway was the perfect house for our group to stay. The property is wonderful and Rhonda was so easy to work with in regards to booking and any questions.
Worked great for us. The play room in the bottom was perfect for handicapped grandparents and being able to bring our grandpuppies was also a blessing! We really appreciated the opportunity!
Went with a group of 15 to do a little fishing. Everyone had plenty of room and we all enjoyed hanging out outside and cooking on the grill. The House was clean and neat. We will book again when we fish Hatteras. Thanks Rhonda
We live in the woods of Arkansas, when I reviewed this property, I was thinking Arkansas at the beach. I guess that it was the rustic exterior and the practicality of the outdoor features. I was so glad that we got to enjoy the remodel. Everyone fit nicely into their spaces. The people down stairs didn't come up for coffee so I think that we missed on some early morning socializing at the breakfast table. There were ample kitchen utensils, plates, cups etc. I don't like teflon pots, we brought an iron frying pan, a metal spatula, two good knives and a 1 quart covered pot and had to use them constantly. We smoked a turkey out on the grill and made Gumbo, there are several large pots and we really wanted to try the steamer by the grill but couldn't find crabs We had wanted to bring a wagon but each got bumped in the packing process. A good fat tired wagon would really help in transporting the chairs and umbrellas. There were ample chairs and beach towels sand toys and boogie boards. We separated our recyclables and took them to the center in Buxton. I would recommend a bin at the house for pick up as the recyclables took up twice as much room as the garbage and shouldn't go the landfill. Our medium sized dog did well up stairs, downstairs, and on the beach and the family enjoyed her company. There was ample ceiling lighting, but several of the lamps needed bulbs, and I had to leave the light on in the bathroom because I kept finding that I was running into furniture and doors trying to get there, I guess the blinds and curtains kept it very dark at night. We all slept well, had a wonderful vacation, got just the right amount of sun, learned a lot about the area, took a lot of great photos and will share precious memories of our stay at the Hideaway in Avon on Hatteras Island on the North Carolina coast. Thank you
The Hideaway was a perfect stay for my large group this July. Rhonda was very helpful and quick to respond with any questions. She sent info about the area before our trip, and even gave some recommendations. We spent most of our time on the huge deck under the house and made use of all the outdoor games and large grill. This house is stocked really well with anything you could need to host and entertain a large group or family. All of the kids were easy to keep entertained with a quick walk to the beach every day(which the Hideaway supplied all the towels/chairs/umbrellas) and the fenced in area under the house to roam free in the evenings. Everyone in our group loved this place and we hope to return soon.
This house is perfectly situated for a great family vacation - a short walk to the end of the road, and over the dunes to the beach. It is close to good restaurants and the Food Lion. There is plenty of parking in the yard for multiple families. The bedrooms are perfect for multiple families with children! The downstairs deck area was our favorite area! Great for grilling and generally hanging out! And Rhonda is quick to answer any questions. Dare I repeat that we had a Fantastic Family Vacation?
The home is very clean airy and was so perfect for 10 adults , three kids and a dog. The enclosed and very large sheltered gathering place outside was used each night for BBQ, corn hole playing, water balloon fights. There are two showers and the laundry room in this area and a large bedroom which sleeps three or four plus with bathroom. Upstairs is a good sized kitchen with large living room next to it making it easy for all to pitch in for dinners etc. Down the hallway are three good sized bedrooms, a bathroom and another bathroom off master bedroom with balcony. There were ample areas offering privacy for those in need. The living quarters could not have been more well designed. This place was just great and just a block from a beautiful beach. Highly recommended by our group and many thanks to Rhonda!
My family enjoyed our stay. Rhonda was very helpful in answering any question we had. I definitely recommend this house as it is really close to the beach and other attraction sites.
The house was very easy to get to. We took a day trip to Ocracoke Island and then spent another day in Kitty Hawk. The rest of the time was spent on the beach. There is a small walk to the beach, but nothing too bad. We loved the open outdoor space underneath the house. Was the house perfect? No, but when you have a group of 14 including 2 kids and 5 teenagers you don't want perfect. The house feels like a lived-in family home, and that is what we were looking for. This was our family's first vacation together. We had a wonderful time and are looking forward to making it an annual thing. Also, my husband spoke to Rhonda over the phone the night we arrived and she was very nice and helpful.
The Hideaway was a great place for our family vacation. It is close to the beach which was BEAUTIFUL! The beach is very wide and not populated. Rhonda was great through all our correspondence. The house was very roomy and comfortable and very accommodating. There are 2 outdoor showers which were perfect after a day at the beach. We had a WONDERFUL time and would definitely recommend this place to others!
We enjoyed corn hole games, took turns in the big hammock, and relaxed in the shade on the downstairs deck and tiki bar. The walk to the beach was only a few minutes. The outdoor shower even had hot water. I likes the fenced in deck area. Thanks for sharing your beach house with us. Eddie Embry
