RED GATE COTTAGE, situated on a knoll in Beaverdam Valley, is a vintage log cabin faced with stone. Semiskilled craftsmen working over decades, using stone and antique brick, produced an effect that makes the cottage resemble an ancient stone house in the Alps. The original log walls inside have been restored and preserved.

A hot tub on the stone patio, cradled by massive rock walls, rests under a vine-draped pergola. Beyond, a sunken garden has blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and fresh herbs to use in the gourmet kitchen, and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows.

From the deck, you can enjoy close mountain views as you dine or sit around a blazing fire in the chiminea. Relax in the hammock, and listen to the sounds of the abundant wild life mingling with those of barnyard animals from nearby farms. Flocks of wild turkeys wander by. Guests recently saw a total of eight black bears (including 4 cubs) during their 10-day stay.

Peaceful and quiet, the cottage is within 10 minutes of the center of Asheville with its many world class restaurants, year-round live entertainment, museums, art galleries, theaters, concert halls, and large exhibitions at the Civic Center. Golfing, rafting, fly fishing and horseback riding are among the local attractions, as well as the Grove Park Inn and the famed Biltmore Estate.

The scenic Beaverdam Valley meanders past the country club golf course en route to the spectacular high mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway – where you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and scenic drives. Yet the fantastic restaurants and night life of Asheville are only a few minutes away.

At Red Gate Cottage, you can enjoy both town and country, truly the best of both worlds. So bring the kids, bring the dog. Here, you can get away from it all but still stay in touch.

    Perfect retreat

    5/5 Stayed Nov 1, 2014

We had a wonderful time in Red Gate Cottage! Georgia, the manager, was responsive and very helpful from my first inquiry; and left homemade cookies, note, and a bottle of wine for us. The cottage is authentically rustic on the outside and modernized and cozy on the inside. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are very nicely remodeled. We loved the gas fireplace! Overall, everything was thoughtfully done and arranged. Red Gate Cottage has a mountain feel but is very close to town.

The Red Cottage has it all, privacy, charm, near downtown, great amenities

    5/5 Stayed Jun 1, 2014

Georgia makes EVERY effort to ensure this is a special place. The kitchen has everything, from spices to all utensils. Private yet near downtown. Dogs welcome and even dog treats waiting, not to mention the bottle of wine for humans! Outdoor and indoor at its rustic best, It could not have been better!

    Bachelorette Bliss

    5/5 Stayed Jun 1, 2014

Thank you so much for opening your beautiful cottage to us. It was the perfect place for a Bachelorette weekend - small enough to provide a cozy and intimate atmosphere, but big enough for a dance party in the living room!

    Too short a stay...

    5/5 Stayed Apr 1, 2014

This cottage, a brief drive from downtown (I think we clocked it at 7 minutes, with stoplights), is absolutely old cabin which has been stoned on the outside, well-fenced - great for folks with dogs (we have a Border Collie), outdoor fireplace, deck, outdoor hot tub, and well-tended grounds. Inside, the real talents of the landlady, Georgia, become apparent: her extensive education and experience as an interior designer and architect are undeniable - the place is adorable, cozy, well-appointed. Curl up in the kitchen nook, read a book in front of the fireplace, take a bath in the beautifully renovated master bath. The cottage is a perfect place from which to explore Asheville or the Blue Ridge. And the landlady is a real delight...but that's ANOTHER story...

    The perfect place to unwind!

    5/5 Stayed Jun 1, 2014

The property is charming, comfortable, very well appointed, and has a great vibe. Beautifully landscaped grounds, lovely areas to bring your party outdoors, and very private - yet, close to anything you might need during your stay. Just rustic enough to feel like a mountain hideaway, but with lots of nice amenities and little extras I didn't expect. I will definitely be back!

Wonderful relaxing all the comforts of home but with mountain views!!

    5/5 Stayed May 1, 2014

Georgia was a wonderful hostess! She added little special touches like cookies, wine and even a dog treat for our golden retriever! Hard to find a place of such charm and quality that accepts dogs. She out did herself and thought of everything. No complaints here! We will be back, thank you for a wonderful week!

Perfect lodging for our Asheville trip!

    5/5 Stayed Mar 1, 2014

The Red Gate Cottage is exactly what we were hoping for during our stay in Asheville! I traveled with my boyfriend and two other couples. The cottage had everything we needed for our stay, and the personal touches made us feel incredibly welcome! We cooked a couple of breakfasts in the well-stocked kitchen, and then gathered around the wonderful kitchen table to plan our days. The gas fireplace made the cottage feel so cozy (what a beautiful stone surround!) and took the slight edge off the somewhat wet March weather. The location was very convenient for everything we were looking to do, including hiking, brewery visits, and checking out downtown.

    Wonderful Asheville Retreat

    5/5 Stayed Nov 1, 2013

My husband, 2-year old daughter and I just returned from a stay at the Red Gate Cottage. It was a wonderful stay, and I'm so glad all the other glowing TripAdvisor reviews were true! Location: The location worked out perfectly for us. It was a short drive to downtown, maybe 10-15 minutes depending on traffic, and there were plenty of grocery stores and pharmacies within a few minutes of the cottage. We also ventured up the mountain one day, and the main road actually brings you up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was a great location overall. The Cottage: The cottage itself was really cute; it has the charm of a rustic cabin (exposed wood planks and stone fireplace), but had all the modern amenities you could need, including a huge, spa-like master bathroom with massive soaking tub. The gas fireplace was great; we used it every day. I don't think we would have gotten as much use out of a wood fireplace. The cottage itself was a great size for our family, even though we didn't utilize the third bedroom at all. We could definitely have fit a few more people in there with us. The Grounds: There is a great new swing set in the yard that my daughter absolutely adored. The yard is not large, but was a great size for us. There was also a really nice fire pit (which we never used, but should have!). There are lots of comfy chairs and places to sit on the porch, and the hot tub was really nice. Property Owner/Manager: Georgia was a dream to work with. She was really on the ball and responsive, not to mention incredibly welcoming and sweet. There were cookies and wine waiting for us when we checked in, and she had so many amenities to accommodate our young child. It was so nice to not have to lug a pack 'n play on our flight and to have a booster seat for her to sit in. It was incredibly easy to book the property with Georgia, and I would love to book with her again next time we visit Asheville.

    Awesome cottage!

I can't day enough about the cozy cottage. It has so many interesting porches, decks and seating areas. Our family enjoyed wine on the side portico, coffee on the front porch and down by the chiminea. Lovely, lovely cottage.

    Honeymooners in the Mountains!

    5/5 Stayed Dec 1, 2012

We selected asheville because it was halfway home from Florida where we had our wedding ceremony on 12/27/12, also because we had heard so many good things about asheville. Since we were traveling with dogs, a fence is a must as they enjoy running around and taking in the smells untethered! Red Gate Cottage was so very much more than a fenced-in cabin in the woods. It is hard to describe all the personal touches that Georgia has put into the cottage to make it so magical. In fact, we probably missed some awesome asheville sightseeing because the cottage would not allow us to leave! We enjoyed the limitless options of vegetarian/vegan fare the city had to offer and are already looking forward to future visits.

A beautiful cabin in a fascinating city!

    5/5 Stayed Nov 1, 2012

We came to Asheville for a 3day weekend of hiking and cultural events. The cabin was charming, cozy, beautifully and thoughtfully put together. We were close to town and grocery shopping, wonderful restaurants, but had the feeling of retreating to a mountain cabin. The only thing which wasn't completely perfect is that the hot tub was foamy and didn't feel as clean as the rest of the immaculate cabin. We will be back!

Every thing you need in an enchanted cottage...

    5/5 Stayed Sep 1, 2012

It was a pleasure dealing with Georgia, she handled all of the arrangements with great attention to detail. The cottage was darling, all of our needs and expectations were met and surpassed. The gated yard was wonderful for exercising our 2 year old golden retriever with no fear of traffic. It is in a great location, close to the Grove Park Inn and Asheville. There are cute outdoor spaces, some of which we never found time to enjoy, altho hours were spent talking, drinking and snacking on the deck. The washer and dryer were handy as we were heading to the beach after our 3 night stay. The gas fireplace took the chill off of a cool fall evening. We loved exploring how the cottage has evolved over time, altho we never did find the secret storage place in the master bath cabinet. Thanks, Georgia, we had a good time and would recommend it highly...

    Totally charming!

Red Gate Cottage was a delightful place to stay. Everything we needed was there. Loved the porches! Just a few minutes away from asheville.

Another wonderful stay at Red Gate Cottage

    5/5 Stayed Mar 1, 2012

Thanks for another wonderful stay at Red Gate Cottage. Anne and I and our dog Smith thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will surely return next year during our spring break. We took full advantage of the hot tub and fireplaces, which made our mountain getaway all the more memorable - and magical. Asheville is a Shangri-La! You would have to be out of your mind NOT to enjoy this town. The food is amazing - I don't think we had one bad meal the entire time - and the wine bars are lovely and sophisticated. The River Arts District was fantastic - a beautiful day! All of these experiences were enjoyed in a beautiful, comfortable place to return to every night - Red Gate Cottage!

Well-Located, Exquisite Bungalow within 10 Minutes of Downtown

    5/5 Stayed Nov 1, 2011

Many, many thanks for the use of Red Gate Cottage! We had an absolutely fantastic time, as did Fern, Selkie, and Frennie. It's clear how much thought and care has been put into this place, and your excellent hospitality was manifest from the welcome cookies for all, to the wine, to the hot tub, to the deck, the two spots outside for having a fire, etc., etc.! We availed ourselves of everything! This is such a gorgeous area, with so much history, and my father, a Black Mountain College alum, especially enjoyed reminiscing as we traversed asheville and its environs. We are anxious to return. Thank you, thank you, thank you! All the best, S, J, L, & M

Asheville + Red Gate Cottage = Perfect Honeymoon

    5/5 Stayed Sep 1, 2010

We discovered Red Gate while looking for places to go on our honeymoon. My husband is British and new to america so I wanted to find a place that offered beauty as well as lots of fun options for coffee shops, restaurants with a unique downtown vibe. Asheville was the perfect choice! We immediately felt at home at the Red Gate. Georgia was so kind & accommodating to us, leaving wine & cookies for us which was such a sweet gesture. The cottage was warm and peaceful and had tons of character - you can tell much thought was put into the construction & design of this special place. Location was great! Easy access to both downtown asheville & the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you're wanting to stay in, there's a grocery store conveniently just down the road... we had a great time grilling out on the deck and cooking English-style breakfast in morning! This summer, my husband's family will coming over from England and joining up with us along with my parents and the 6 of us (with our 2 K-9 friends) will be creating new memories at the Red Gate once more! We're so looking forward to it!

    Great place to stay

We just left this wonderful cottage after spending four days enjoying the folliage. The cottage is centrally located and an easy drive to get too. The Parkway is only minutes away as well. Georgia is a wonderful hostess. Our Maltese Lilly even had a biscuit with her name on it upon our arrival and we had a bottle of wine waiting to be shared. The three couples felt like we were at home as the cottage contains every imaginable ammenity to meet our comfort and needs. I never got to meet Georgia in person, but we had several phone conversations where she made me feel like a friend rather than a tenant. I highly recommend this cottage to everyone.

    Wonderful and comfortable home

    5/5 Stayed Jul 1, 2011

The Red Gate Cottage was one of the finest and well-equipped homes that we have rented in over thirty years of travel with my cousin and her husband. The owner is very warm, welcoming her guests with a bottle of wine and homemade cookies. Everything in the house was not only in working order but of good quality. The two bathrooms are spa-like and kept immaculately clean. The owner makes maximum use of space so that there is ample storage for everything. She has also provided many amenities not normally found in rentals such as a hair dryer, soaps, spa flip flops, teas, coffees, and condiments. The feel of the home is like being in Europe: stone walls, terraces and outdoor cooking and eating areas. Perhaps one of the features we most enjoyed, particularly after hiking in the gorgeous nearby mountains, was the hot tub. Once again, the hot tub was immaculately clean and well cared for with ample seating for four people. The beds were made up with fine linens and the mattresses were top notch. Truly, this is a first class property with none of the cost-cutting features that one frequently finds in properties used for rental. After a wonderful week in asheville, I not only recommend a visit to this beautiful city but definitely a stay at the Red Gate Cottage. We stayed only a week but I certainly wish it could have been longer!

    Perfect for a Girl's Weekend!

    5/5 Stayed Oct 1, 2010

The Little Red Cottage was just perfect for our girl's getaway in Asheville. The owner, Georgia, was so hospitable, welcoming us with a bottle of wine and homemade cookies. The cottage has been decorated in the most adorable way and the gardens and outdoor space add to the most peaceful atmosphere. Totally recommend it!

Georgia, Just want to thank you so much for letting us enjoy your wonderful Red Gate Cottage. It is just as lovely as the pictures you see online. I loved that it was so secluded yet so very close to everything. We were always surprised that wherever we were going was only a few minutes away. Our doggies also had fun and loved their walks with the horses and cows to greet us. The Hot Tub was great as well as the porch! Such a lovely area. The cookies and wine were also appreciated after a long trip. Thanks again and we look forwarded to spending more time there. Mary ann and Joe from Maryland.

    A Little Slice of Heaven

    5/5 Stayed May 1, 2010

Just returned from two weeks at Red Gate Cottage and a little slice of heaven. Though the asheville area was experiencing an unusual 'heat wave', the cottage was cool and delightful, and with the shade trees, the deck and yard were enjoyable, too. We explored the asheville area during the daytime, then spent most late afternoons and evenings on the deck. We didn't see any wildlife, though at night you could hear coyotes and during the daytime, an occasional rooster or wild turkey. Thhis very cute cottage is an ideal set-up with its split bedroom layout, comfy beds, a nice living room area with tv, dvd and games, and a well-equipped kitchen with an attached eating area. The washer/dryer in the mudroom was definitely a plus for us. We were traveling with our dogs, so the fenced yard was perfect. All in all, a great vacation home, and one that we'll return to again on our next visit to the area.

    The Red Cottage

    5/5 Stayed Nov 1, 2009

My recent stay at The Red Cottage could not have been more pleasant. The location is perfect-at the foot of the Blue Ridge Parkway yet just a mile or 2 from a main road with Fresh Market, Starbucks, etc. at the intersection. Another excellent grocery not to be missed is Green Life a bit south also on Merriman. The cottage is not only perfectly located but is utterly accommodating in a carefully planned yet not fussy way. I was there for peak leaf color and could see the colors changing on the surrounding mountains from the deck. Nighttime is fun if you like sitting around a fire which I did either on the deck with the chiminea or at the fire pit. The hot tub doesn't even need to be warmed up-it's ready to go and the owner has provided big cozy robes and slippers to wear to and from. Everything works well in the cottage making it utterly comfortable and charming. I'm already thinking of my next stay there.

Beautiful Cottage With Rustic Charm Makes For the Perfect Getaway!

    5/5 Stayed Jul 1, 2015

My family was enamoured by this beautiful cottage from the second we arrived! Red Gate Cottage is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains just a few short miles from restaurants, shops and attractions. The well-manicured gardens that surround this quaint home simply add to it's allure and charm. My husband and I planned our four-night getaway to Asheville on a whim with four of our five children, while our oldest was on a mission trip. Red Gate Cottage was booked solid, except for the exact four nights we were interested in. What a blessing! This 3BR/2BA cottage was a perfect fit for the six of us to create treasured family memories. We thoroughly enjoyed preparing delicious meals in the well-equipped kitchen and the corner booth was just the right design for game night. The private hot tub was a welcomed sight after a long day of hiking and exploring. We slept so well in the cozy bedrooms, it was easy to feel right at home. The owner, Georgia, has a beautiful gift of hospitality! We'll be sure to plan our stay at this lovely retreat again the next time we are visiting Asheville.

    Cozy Cottage

    5/5 Stayed Nov 1, 2016

We stayed at the lovely Red Gate Cottage in November for 4 days. It was perfect for 6 girlfriends on a get away. It has everything you could possibly need and the grocery is just down the road. We were unable to utilize the fire pit because of the burning ban but the fireplace was on while we were there and it just made it all the more cozy. There is so much to do in the Asheville area. We spent 3 days visiting the Biltmore during their Christmas event which was money well spent, but there is so much more to do there and the Red Gate Cottage is central to it all. Georgia was so thoughtful with the wine, cookies and leaving the lights on for our after dark arrival. The only downfall is that there are not mountain views but everything else is absolutely perfect. We'll look forward to staying here again in a heartbeat!

Cute but lots of maintenance issues

    2/5 Stayed Aug 1, 2017

A charming but frustrating cottage. Converted log cabin that has been remodeled/rebuilt with additions. Lots of patio space and a nice outdoor play area, but also doors that scrape the uneven floors and are hard to close. Bedrooms are small with little room around beds and two don't have any available drawer space. It was tight for us the first two nights with four adults and three kids, much better the last two nights with two adults and three kids. When we arrived, the hot tub was not working because the circuit breaker had blown and not been reset with the previous tenants. As a result it was very cold and we were informed it would take a day or more to reheat. As it turned out, we never used the tub after it reheated, so it was not a problem. Owner (Georgia) tries hard--fresh cookies plus personalized treats for the two dogs we ultimately had decided to leave at home--but she didn't handle problems well during our stay. The first morning we had problem with master toilet not refilling. We called and left message but didn't hear back until very late in day after we sent an email--apparently she doesn't check her voicemail very often. By then the problem had resolved itself while we were away, which was good because it was so late in day. The last night we planned to barbecue a steak on grill (we had eaten dinners as well as lunches out before then). The grill wouldn't start--empty tank. In addition, the grill was filthy--clean on top, but spaces between bars were clogged with grease. We tried to broil, but there was no broiling pan for gas stove and the griddle was crusty with large blobs of stuff. When she returned our call, she said it would take 5 minutes to get tank at local store, but it was about 40 minutes before she arrived--without a refilled tank. When we asked about the filthy grill and griddle, she said, "I don't do dishes or pots and pans." I replied that we were happy to clean up after ourselves, but not previous tenants. When tenants don't clean up after themselves, I assumed landlord would have it cleaned and subtract something from the damage deposit, not leave it for the next tenant. To be fair, our experience may have been the exception, judging by the many very positive reviews.

    Cozy Winter Cabin Retreat

    5/5 Stayed Jan 1, 2018

I'm totally in love with this cabin! It was so easy to get to (5-10 minutes from major shopping area) but nestled up near the Blue Ridge Parkway and sooo quiet at night. Everything I could need was available and in working order. And I had so many blankets and quilts provided, I had to put a couple away because the cabin stayed cozy and warm with the central heating as well as the gorgeous gas log fireplace. Downtown Asheville is only 15 minutes away, but I hardly spent time in town -- just wanted to relax at the cabin. This was even a vacation for my dog - an active boxer mix, who loved sniffing around the large fenced-in yard (once red gate was closed) to look for mountain critters. Georgia is an amazing host/owner who checked in to make sure I had what I needed, even for the dog! If you need to decompress from the stresses of post-holiday or work schedules and still feel like you're at home, this is the place!

    Exceeded our expectations!

    5/5 Stayed Jun 1, 2018

Our first stay in Asheville and this magical Cottage made our stay all the more better. The property is very accommodating if you have pets, children and for anyone that wants a relaxing, and quiet environment. Georgia has not missed a beat when it comes to making sure that when you arrive you will have everything you need to enjoy your stay. When we arrived I was floored at how charming, clean and comfortable every spot on this property is. So, so much better than staying at a Hotel in my opinion because we had our privacy, we didn't have to dine out for all of our meals and the neighborhood is very quiet. We can't wait to go back! Thank you Georgia.
