Javelina Hideout is a modern desert retreat located on 10 acres with expansive views. JH is an eco-friendly, off-grid home with rainwater harvesting that blends in beautifully with the stunning desert scenery. It is thoughtfully and sustainably designed to maximize comfort and enjoyment while minimizing the environmental impact.
The main house features a full kitchen and open concept dining and living area. The kitchen is equipped with an oven, gas range, and a full-sized refrigerator, but there is no dishwasher or microwave. Pots, pans and dishwares are provided for your convenience. There is no coffeemaker due to the limitations of our solar electric, but the stove will boil a pot of water very quickly and we provide a French press for your morning coffee. Propane wall heaters are offered in the main house and the bunkhouse. The main house has a mini split AC in the master bedroom that will cool the house in the summer; however, guests must be sensible about how and when they use the air conditioner. An instruction guide with summertime tips is provided at the rental. Using these sensible guidelines, it is possible to keep the house comfortable in the warmer months.
The master bedroom has a large east facing window for watching the sunrise from bed, and a high south facing windows for views. The room has a king memory foam mattress, ceiling fan, and a beautiful wood wall to frame your views. There is a comfortable rollaway TwinXL bed that can be used in the living room.
The bunkhouse is available for use with any booking, however extra cleaning fees apply. For parties above 3, the cleaning fee is a mandatory charge since the main house will only accommodate 3 people. It is ideal for guests wanting solitude away from the main house. It has 2 TwinXL bunks equipped with their own reading lamp and USB outlets for phone charging. Each bunk has screened, sliding windows at the head and foot of the bed for a cross breeze and views of the stars. It is not air conditioned, but does have a wall mount oscillating fan and a propane wall heater. It is passively designed for comfortable sleeping throughout most of the year, although in the summer months it can be warm for sleeping. An outdoor sink is provided for convenience. Bunk house guests can access the bathroom in the main house via an exterior door.
When the weather is too nice to be indoors, you can also cook outside on the gas grill or the charcoal park grill. Please bring your own charcoal.
Enjoy an evening campfire around the firepit out front (please bring your own firewood), or during a burn ban use the gas firepit located in the seating area out back.
Campsites are available upon special request if you need to accommodate a group over 5 people. Campers are required to bring all their own bedding and bath linens. (Additional $25 cleaning fee applies and there will be an additional charge of $10 per person per night for tent camping. This helps cover the cost of additional water usage).
Special request of our guests:
We do ask that our guests not use more than 10 gallons of our rainwater per day / per person. Please help us conserve our most valuable and precious resource in the desert - our water!
Please do not bring or use any electrical appliances that heat up - such as a blow dryer, curling iron, coffee maker, crock pot etc. These appliances will drain the solar battery bank and can possibly damage the system. Please conserve energy the same way you conserve water.
Standard rental is for the main house and all outdoor areas. Renters with more than 4 or 5 in their group will need to add the Bunk House. Smaller groups requiring/desiring extra space can add the Bunk House as an option. The only additional charge for the Bunk House is the $15 cleaning fee.
Other Things to Note:
SOME CHARGES MAY BE BILLED SEPARATELY: If an applicable tax or fee is not included on an automatic quote or invoice, a supplemental charge will be added to cover the relevant additional expenses.
TAXES and FEES:
Hotel Tax: 6% State and 7% County.
Cleaning Fee: $100 per stay.
Extra Guest Fee: $10 nightly for the 3rd, 4th & 5th guests.
Extra Space Cleaning Fee: $15 per stay if the Bunkhouse is added.
Interaction with Guests:
We manage several properties and live a few miles away. We are available by phone, text, email, or message. We are typically only on site for cleaning or maintenance issues.
Lots of stars, piece and quiet. Property was clean and exceeded my expectations. The only thing I will do different next time is take my Keurig machine from home.
Loved this house. The location was great. It had everything we needed, from flashlights to binoculars and was super clean. Enjoyed the off the grid experience. Couldn’t have been better. Perfect place to enjoy Big Bend Area.
My family and I absolutely loved the “Javelina Hideout” while visiting Big Bend National Park. Everything about the place was awesome, the sunsets, seclusion, the stars!! I could not recommend this property more. Thank you!!
Javelina Hideout is a majestic place in the desert. My family and I wanted to be off the grid but at the same time have modern amenities. JH offers just that. This was our first trip to BBNP and Terlingua and we plan on coming back soon and staying at JH. The property is only about 20 min from the town of Study Butte and 25 min from Ghost Town Terlingua, on plenty of acreage to give you the feeling of being alone in the desert. The property is perfect for a party of 5 with the added bunkhouse. It was only 3 of us and the house was amazing. We loved all the details that went into making this home feel like a home away from home from the interior to the yard art. The night skies are amazing with hardly any light pollution. This place was just what we needed for a getaway in the desert. We absolutely loved it and we cant wait to go back. Thank you Sid, Mel, and Bella
Great location to BBNP. Very private location with great 360 views. We will stay here again!
We had such a wonderful time at Javelina Ranch - the views from the house were amazing, the bird watching on the feeder was the best (we saw the quails on our last morning there!), and being near Terlingua and Big Bend made it the perfect place to stay. We had no issues with the solar power or rainwater, and it was super rad to stay in a place truly off the grid with everything we needed to cook and truly relax. Thank you so much for the best stay! We'll definitely be back!
My husband and I went for our honeymoon last week and we had the best time! Its a bit different to be off grid but an amazing experience. Easy drive to Big Bend NP or Big Bend SP, Terlingua, Alpine, and Lajitas. We wanted quiet and secluded to relax and recharge after the stresses of planning a wedding (during Covid) and reconnect with each other. The place was spotless and very clean with lots of outdoor space to roam and enjoy the west Texas sunsets/sunrises. Also has a great gas fire pit to sit around on a cool night, and the stars are spectacular!
This home is a sanctuary for the soul. The mountains beyond @ dessert landscape pull you out of yourself and bring the healing in. Inside, all of the comforts are there. The space brings insight that living off grid, is possible & comfortable, but also makes one mindful to be in synchronicity with nature. It connects you further. Thank you for the wonderful experience.
This place was perfect for me and my husband. Very clean and up to date. We cooked outside for every meal over the fire pit. We can’t wait to go back!!
Took my son and brother to do some hiking in big bend and decided to rent here since the campgrounds were closed. Awesome property the pictures do not do it justice. If you are looking to disconnect but still be comfortable this Property has you covered fully.
Javelina Hideout is so well cared for and beautiful! Environmentally conscientious and luxurious, every detail tended to, with helpful notes, and a beautiful decor with sunrise and sunset views that will take your breath away. Drive to Big Bend is totally manageable. Absolutely delightful. Spring temperatures perfect and terrific wilderness all around. What a treat!
Our family of 5 stayed here very comfortably. We moved the roll away bed to the bunkhouse so our 3 teens had their own space which we and they both loved. We loved watching the birds from the dining table each morning, the convenient location for our drive into Big Bend each day and the spectacular sunsets and stars as we are s’mores by the fire pit each night. The place was very clean ( tho some previous guests had put their dishes away dirty so we ended up having to wash everything we used since we weren’t sure which were clean)...but thats not the hosts fault. We loved every minute here and can’t wait to return for a longer visit!
This property was clearly developed with plenty of attention to detail. Very nice decorative and functional appointments. We would certainly consider staying here again. There are alway nits to pick, and there were a few here. We found a number of the dishes were put away dirty. There was a fair amount of residual hair and dust at a few spots on the floor. The issue of no toilet paper allowed in the commode was inconvenient. We utilize a septic system at home with no issues with toilet paper. I guess the system here is of a different duty rating. The property description lists some features that were not provided; a microwave was not found although one is advertised as being present. Aside from these few issues, we found the accommodation really fun and restful.
The property is nicely secluded, very quiet, lots of birds around. We recommend it 5 Stars..
We had a fantastic time. The house and it’s peaceful surroundings were amazing.
This is our second time staying at the JH and we love it! Great getaway!
This is an incredible property where the owners have left nothing to chance. The living off the grid sounds a bit intimidating but the place is extremely comfortable and reasonably convenient to the Parks and Terlingua. The sunrises, sunsets, desert skyine, and night skies are amazing. You will not be disappointed if you spend time in this place. We hated to leave.
Great place, well stocked kitchen, and very comfortable beds.
Perfect stay for the two of us. Great views and location. Off grid but you would barely know it. Comfortable accommodations. Only a short drive to Big Bend National Park and the ghost town of Terlingua.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Javelina Hideout. The instructions/communication given prior to arrival were very helpful before and during our stay. The home is laid out to give you fantastic views of the area and the location is very peaceful. The informational book the owners left was very helpful as well. We would definitely stay here in the future.
I booked this property for our 20th anniversary celebration. I could not be happier with my choice. Beautiful home with amazing views. Everything you could need is here. Wonderful outdoor spaces. It provided the opportunity to disconnect from our everyday stressful life and reconnect with each other. Highly recommend and would definitely stay again.
A wonderful place to really get away from everything and just enjoy some family time in nature.
The listing of the home is completely accurate with one minor issue. The house simply does not cool down if the outside temps are above 85. That was our wish for spending the extra on such a nice looking place - to get relief from the heat after hiking and playing in parks all day. It would have been better to camp in the Chisos in July. Live and learn! I do think this is a great option for other seasons but would personally camp in the cooler months. For those that prefer some protection from the elements and wildlife when sleeping, this place is awesome. You will get the views and wildlife without the camping mess and it's a pretty easy drive to the park entrance and Terlingua.
The family and I loved the Javelina Hideout. It’s just enough off the grid where you can get away from everything but still have the amenities for comfort.
The Javelina hideout is a unique property near Big bend and I highly recommend it! Cozy little off the grid house that has all the essentials and an amazing outdoor area that makes you want to stay outside all night (p.s. take bug spray because the mosquitoes were terrible). The sunrise and sunset were unbelievable and are a must see! The sky out here is so big and as long as it's a clear night the stars will be out and the view is breathtaking. Be prepared for the gravel road, that being said if you have a smaller car you should be fine as long as you drive slow. We are definitely going to come back and bring our 3 girls next time! Thanks!
Wow! This house is secluded with modern amenities and has excellent access to Big Bend and Terlingua. It's an absolute must stay if you are in the region and planning a trip!
This is the best place I have stayed at in the last 20 years of visiting the Big Bend area. The views never stop from dawn to dusk to the bright stars at night.
I am a designer and builder and was very impressed with this home. The space was well planned, the finishes were modest but beautiful, the furnishings were comfortable....I have not slept so well in a long time. We drove into Terlingua, Big Bend, Presidio...and I never felt we were too far off the beaten path when staying in Terlingua Ranch. Just driving around the ranch itself was a treat. Will certainly return!
Was at Javelina Hideout (JH) in early July. JH is positioned so every sunrise can be viewed in the morning from bed (and they are truly awesome in West Texas) and sunsets can be enjoyed on the covered porch every evening. Add to that the beautiful views of the star filled sky while sitting just outside the covered porch at the bar. In every direction there are great views of the surrounding mountains and you might just see (or hear) javelina, coyotes, road runners or other critters. The summer afternoon thunderstorms are sometimes accompanied with stunning rainbows and provide spectacular lightning shows many evenings. Where else can you do all this while enjoying an absolutely first class rental that blends with the desert landscape, has all the conveniences of a home (indoor toilet, shower, full kitchen king bed, internet, streaming TV, A/C), is environmentally friendly (solar electric, rainwater collection system) and decorated tastefully and artistically both inside and out. The outdoors has both gas and wood fire pits, gas and charcoal grills, a long bar, a huge covered patio and lots of seating for large gatherings. Big Bend National and State Parks are nearby. St Elena Canyon, the Chisos Mountains and a fantastic dinosaur exhibit are among my favorites at the National Park. Colorado Canyon along river road and the Hoo Doos are my favorites in the State Park. Swimming, boating hiking, mountain biking and many other activities can be enjoyed during a visit to JH. A super place to spend a few days or weeks depending on what you like to do. Thank you Amy and Angela for a great escape!!!!!
My first off grid experience and what an amazing set up. Definitely no roughing it going on here. Only warning is that you may not want to leave the JH to go see the parks. The porch has its own gravity and I can't wait to visit again.
Loved the views and the solitude. Great stargazing and comfortable accommodations. Convenient to Terlingua and Big Bend parks.
What an amazingly cool desert escape!! This place was so unexpectedly well-appointed. It was the best of both worlds - an off-the-grid escape, but with every convenience and amenity you could ever want. This is a place where you can truly leave it all behind and enjoy the quiet serenity of the desert. It makes a great home base for those looking to explore Big Bend. You might not want to leave!!
Love this property! Great hosts!
Great place of you want to disappear near Big Bend. This will be our go to rental in the Big Bend area.
Great offgrid experience.
We loved our stay at the Javelina Hideout! It is beautifully designed, spotless, and filled with top quality furniture and appliances. The kitchen had anything we could have needed. The AC worked great. The internet access was fantastic. We had to call to ask how to get the door to lock and got instant and friendly help. All of that is in addition to the fact that the location is stunning. It's a very special place.
We were all very impressed with the accommodations. The effort and planning put into every aspect of the home from the decor, to the environmentally friendly setup, were evident throughout our stay. The owners thought of everything and included amenities to make our stay perfect. The stars at night were beautiful and the location was perfect for our weekend itinerary. We will definitely be visiting again.
We had a wonderful time at Javelina Hideout. Our only regret was not booking the house for our entire week. We really appreciated how well the owners integrated the house into the landscape. The large windows and many outdoor spaces make you feel like you are a part of the desert. I also appreciate how ‘green’ the house is with it’s solar panels and water conservation. The house is very functional and has all you need to cook meals. It is a pretty quick drive to the National Park as well. Good base location. We hope to return next year!
Javelina Hideout has everything the eco-conscious traveler would desire: renewable energy, an outhouse for Number 2 (if you want), incredible insulation--while still feeling like a luxury home on the inside. Additionally, there is abundant wildlife (to the careful/lucky observer) that can be watched on-site: javelinas, roadrunners, jackrabbits, desert birds (e.g. cactus wren), and more! The drive to Big Bend is not at all too long to be tiring, and it is a great launching point for many west Texas adventures. The host replied rapidly to any and all inquiries. Very much recommended
Our family loved our stay at the Javelina Hideout! Such a well-designed house with many wonderful, thoughtful details. Kids stayed in the bunkhouse and loved their cool, private space. My spouse and I enjoyed all the outdoor spaces and the breath-taking vistas. The skies, the stars, the mountains, the silence -- it was all amazing. Most importantly, we all learned some important lessons in low-impact living and conservation. A truly memorable experience! Please keep in mind that the Hideout is quite a distance from the town of Alpine (60 miles) and is located closer to Terlingua and the parks.
We enjoyed the Javelina Hideout; unfortunately it was overcast and cold at night so we weren't able to utilize the outdoor amenities. We had a combination of cooking at the house and eating some dinners out. It would be nice if the propane burners could be tweaked a bit; it was not possible to turn down the heat enough to get a slow simmer, but we managed. Overall we had a great time and would love to return some day.
Wow, we didn't expect this place to be so modern and welcoming. So many places to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We were absolutely surprised and thrilled we found this place. Great little gem.
We loved the property, so peaceful and serene. Perfect location for enjoying the Big Bend area.
I've been going to the Big Bend area since 1982, and my stay at the Javelina Hideout (JH) for 4 nights was the easiest, most convenient and luxurious stay of all. We did not even eat out, we chose to stay in and enjoy the amazing sunsets while cooking in the nice kitchen and grilling on the big grill. We enjoyed coffee each morning outside while watching the sun rise, what a way to wake up! The super luxurious king size bed is much more comfy than my own bed at home, and having a shower, toilet, and all the amenities - while knowing it is off the grid and eco-friendly was impressive. The entire place has been planned down to the last detail. The flowers were in bloom last week and the property was covered in lovely yellow flowers. Can't say enough about this gem of a place in the desert. It's just a treat to stay there, and I recommend it highly.
Wish I could live here! It is so peaceful that you should add and extra day just to hang out at JH! The serenity that you feel is not only because of the incredible surroundings, the seclusion, or the privacy, but also the thoughtful and artful touches everywhere. Metal bike sculptures against the back drop of 9 Point Mesa and colorful glass shimmering here & there in the landscape. A multitude of out door spaces are available to just hang out...my favorites are the swing at the bunk house & watching the sunset at the Sunset Bar. The interior layout is thoughtfully designed and contemporary. I loved, loved the multitude of whimsical hooks everywhere to hang your stuff on. You can never have too many hooks! The kitchen is well equipped for food prep, a great gas stove/oven & fridge..PLUS the outdoor gas grill rocks! JH is definitely on the top of my list for future visits to Big Bend.
My husband and I loved staying at the Javelina Hideout. Very comfortable accommodations close to the park (~30 min to the entrance). Being off the grid was a nice change of pace. Internet is fairly reliable - we even watched a couple streaming ice hockey games with only a few issues. The bed is super comfy. The shower is hot but you'll need to be fast (3 min or less). Lots of cooking implements so you can make meals (stop in Alpine on the way in for groceries or pick up a few items at Cottonwood Market). Great star gazing. Nice propane firepit. Overall, we loved it and will definitely be back!
Such an amazing off grid place with all the amenities needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay. This is our second stay at this magical place.
we had a wonderful time at JH, beautiful home in a quiet and peaceful setting also enjoyed trip to nearby Big Bend NP and Lajitas, Terlingua Ghost Town , the Bluebonnets were blooming along the road, beautiful sight
Very beautiful, comfortable and relaxing♡
Amazing tranquility off the grid but with modern comfort. The stars at night were breathtaking. Property owners were very good with their emails. It was an amazing experience.
Very nice, clean property out in a secluded area. Coming from a city, we had almost forgotten what complete silence sounds like. Javelina Hideout had all the things we needed to make our stay comfortable. I would recommend bringing a hammock. We really enjoyed our stay, Thank you!
This place was very clean and modern. A secluded oasis in the middle of nowhere. We didn't know what to expect with an off grid home, but we were so impressed with Javelina Hideout. Very comfortable and we had everything we needed. Would love to bring more people next time to enjoy all the of the outdoor space. Ange & Watson
This place is a gorgeous property with incredible views. It really does an excellent job in serving its purpose for the reasons most people want to go to the Big Bend region. Quiet, isolated, makes you feel like the only people on the planet in the best way. House was incredibly clean and comfortable. It was stocked with everything you could need and was truly a home away from home. I'm pretty OCD and my brain thrives on having ALL THE INFORMATION, so I especially appreciated all the detailed instruction manuals prepared by the owners. My family made fun of me because they knew it was right up my alley and I got an intense amount of satisfaction every time I got to reference the instruction guide. We went the last week of Dec, the weather was incredibly cold, and the heaters worked extremely well. Can't vouch for comfort in the heat, but comfort in the cold was exceptional. I'm a housecat who doesn't love the idea of using an outhouse, but it was the best outhouse I've ever had the pleasure of using. This was by far the greenest place we've ever stayed, so we weren't entirely sure what to expect, but rest assured that this house makes it easy. The directions to the property that you're given prior to arrival are very, very helpful and well done. You'll have no problem getting there if you utilize them. We booked both the house and the bunkhouse. We arrived at 11:00 pm the first evening, so we were trying to get acclimated in the dark, and we mistakenly thought that the door to the storage area was the door to the bunkhouse. The bunkhouse code obviously didn't work on that door, so we assumed we were locked out. Cell service is spotty/non-existent out there, so I used the wifi to iMessage my husband (who wasn't able to make the trip) and asked him to contact Daryl and ask about the bunkhouse code. We were hesitant to bother Daryl at that hour, but we needed access to the bunkhouse in order to sleep. He was able to get in touch with him and Daryl called us on the landline in the house. Please note that it wasn't until the moment that the landline rang that we even realized we could've just used it to call him ourselves, haha. Daryl informed us that we were using the wrong door and sure enough, the code worked just fine on the actual bunkhouse door. We appreciated being able to contact him for help and his readiness/willingness to help us despite the late hour.
We had a great time at the Javelina Hideout. Such a great place. So secluded and peaceful. Only regret is not spending more time there!
Couldn't have found a better place to get away from it all and have everything you need at hand. Was awesome that Javelina Hideout is off grid and you don't notice it. Unbelievable starry nights, Milky Way and all. Miles of roads to explore on two or 4 wheels. Just walking around the property was delight. Got a nice MTB ride in the state park on the Dome Loop, a not to be missed ride. Hiked Christmas Mountain, beers at Bad Rabbit. Perfect 4 days in paradise. Can't wait to go back.
We did get a little lost at night. So make sure you arrive before sunset. Nice place.
WoW! What a view! We loved our stay at the Javalina Hideout. It was a perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet of the desert. Sitting outside and watching the colors fade and stars come out is unforgettable, we can wait to go back!
When you walk into this desert home, you can feel the love, attention and know-how that went into creating it. My family loved the open concept, crisp décor, outdoor living spaces and spectacular vistas in every direction. And the utter and complete quiet. No skimping on comfort or necessities at JH. We found a well-appointed, fully-stocked kitchen with modern appliances; a cozy living area with comfortable couches and chairs and a large bedroom with plenty of closet space. My favorite things about JH were the pair of nesting doves on the porch above my hammock, the unforgettable smell of creosote bushes in the cool morning air and watching a thunderstorm move across the horizon at sunset. We picked Javelina Hideout because of its easy access to Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Terlingua, Santa Elena Canyon, River Road and more. We didn't want to leave. Our only disappointment? We didn’t see a single javelina!
We loved Javelina Hideout! Every detail of this getaway property is perfectly planned. I am pretty sure this is the best rental in the Big Bend region. It’s a great spot to find peace and serenity. Although there were so many adventures to be found in the region, we found it hard to leave Javelina Hideout and spent the majority of our time relaxing at the house. I will recommend anyone and everyone to book a stay here, you will not regret it! We cannot wait to return in the near future!
There’s something about the desert that’s rejuventaing in all the right ways. And, this home brings all of those things into place. The home is warm, beautiful, and frames well the beauty that surrounds it. It’s sitauted close to the park, and within arms reach to Alpine and Marfa. I’ll be back.
This place is amazing! The porch and other outdoor areas are the best places to watch the night sky show! It’s so quiet and peaceful that we didn’t want to go anywhere else! But we visited Terlingua and Big Bend both of which were great. We will definitely be back to Javelina Hideout!
This place is full of off-the-grid awesomeness!! The house has all the amenities you would ever need and the outside areas are the bomb! Bring your food and drinks of choice and sit outside and watch the show! It’s simply amazing from the time the sun goes down until it comes up the next morning. You will not be disappointed! (From guest Moncy W, reposted from Javelina Hideout Facebook page)
There really is nothing to add. Javelina is as advertised and if that is what you want it works very well. It did for us. We will go back, likely in a different season to see the splendor of Lost Rd and Big Bend in a different light. On a practical side it was well equipped, comfortable, cool and easy to enjoy effortlessly. Don't miss the State Park if you have time.
This was our first trip to the Big Bend area, and Javelina Hideout was the highlight of our trip! Living off the grid was an amazing experience! This little gem is secluded, yet easily accessible to Big Bend National and State Park. The owner didn’t miss one single detail in providing a fully equipped home! The open window concept throughout the home allowed for amazing views rather inside or out! The house was uniquely decorated, and so spacious! The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed to cook delicious meals every night, and then enjoy dinner on the covered patio, watching the gorgeous sunset! The night sky is breathtaking…stars stacked upon stars! We spent hours in the evening sitting outside, watching the Jackrabbits, Night Hawks, Roadrunners and Quail! Javelina Hideout is an experience you won’t forget! I highly recommend this beautiful vacation home. You won’t be disappointed! Chad and Amy
The Javelina Hideout is a terrific place to stay. Situated on a quiet 10 acre piece of Texas desert, it is conveniently located to just about everything in the region. The main house is cozy and extremely well appointed. It has everything you could ask for, all you need to bring is food, suds an duds. It runs on solar energy and it has a water catchment system for everything but drinking water. This wonderful little place surpassed our expectations on every level. It is perfect for those who want to get out into the great outdoors and have the comforts of home. It comes with gorgeous sunsets every evening. We enjoyed it and will re-book! It was a great value!
First time to the big bend area and I really loved this cabin and everything about the area. It is located about 30 min north of the park but the drive is easy and study butte has a gas station on the way. This cabin was a perfect retreat after each day of hiking and exploring the park. The outside space is so awesome and we used the charcoal grill and gas fire pit every night. The porch swing and sunset bar are so relaxing to hang out by as well. The king size bed was very comfortable. We didn’t ever need the AC because the nights are cool enough with Windows open. They had all the little items you might forget as well like extra flashlights, wine opener, grill tools, etc. Would stay again especially with another couple because the outdoor area is just so much fun.
LOVED our stay! This house was built with a lot of thought, creativity and design. It is extremely welcoming and comfortable. In the middle of the desert, the Javelina Hideout provides an amazing oasis all while teaching visitors how we can be good stewards of our resources. Will certainly go back!
The house was absolutely amazing and property itself was a exactly what my friends and I were looking for.
A great experience in “green living “. It reminded us how much more we could do in our everyday lives. Perfect place to explore all the beauty of Big Bend NP
You guys. Seriously. This place is amazing! We drove from Dallas/Austin to get away from the city and slow down. Our lives are hectic, and Javelina Hideout gave us a great balance of being off the grid, while still having the comforts of a fancy hotel. We brought our hammocks and watched the wildlife, sunsets and bands of the Milky Way roll past. The full kitchen with gas stove allowed us to cook a nice dinner. The gas fire pit made for a lovely place to sit and tell stories. The firm, comfortable bed was perfect for resting after long hikes or long afternoons of lounging. The house is gorgeous and laid out perfectly, and the timer in the shower is genius! We were close enough to Terlingua and Big Bend National Park that we could go hiking or eat at the Starlight Theater, but still felt off the grid. Overall it was a beautiful place to stay! Can’t say enough great things! 😀
We absolutely loved our stay at a Javelina Hideout. Everything was just as described! The kids loved staying in the bunkhouse, we all enjoyed the sunset bar, and took advantage of the outdoor kitchen for a great fajita dinner on the porch. The house is very well designed and the owners have literally thought of everything (right down to providing a WiFi portable speaker so that you can have a soundtrack to your sunset viewing and stargazing). While we primarily used the house as a home base for our stay (as we spent most of our time hitting just about every point of interest in Big Bend), it would have also been great to have just relaxed at the house for a few days. Thank you for an incredibly memorable stay!
Javelina Hideout is one of the coolest places you can stay. The owners have thought through every modern comfort, convenience and practicality while still creating a highly sustainable home. Great views, great friends, and a wonderful exploration of sustainable living. No other place like it!
The moment I arrived here my blood pressure dropped! It is so quiet, peaceful, and beautiful! This place is rustic, but modern and so clean and welcoming. They have thought of everything. There is a gas fire pit and a wood burning fire pit. There is also an outhouse or a flush toilet. The beds are super comfortable and you can watch the sunrise from the master bedroom. There is also a bar where you can sit and watch stunning sunsets. No light pollution so the star viewing is unbelievable! We saw numerous shooting stars! This was an amazing experience and we will definitely return and will be recommending Javelina Hideout to all our friends.
very impressed by the house and the incredible views, beautiful sunrises looking out the bedroom window and awesome sunsets sitting on the front porch, kitchen was well stocked we enjoyed our stay and will be back, close to BBNP, Terlingua Ghost town and we drove along the Rio Grande to visit Fort Leaton. we really enjoyed the quiet and peaceful surroundings, will definitely recommend this place to everyone
Javelina Hideout (JH) was a great place to stay and enjoy Big Bend with numerous dual-sport riding opportunities nearby. The modern design, finishes and furniture were an oasis in the Big Bend desert and was a great place to relax after a long day of trail riding. JH offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains with an off-the-grid experience that doesn't disappoint. The internet speeds were great allowing quick access to information as well as streaming movies at night.
We stayed at the Javelina Hideout for the last 2 days of a week long vacation in Big Bend Area. It was lovely. Inside beautiful and new, so many outside areas to enjoy and so comfortable and relaxing. Being off the grid was interesting, made for a good challenge. We would highly recommend this beautiful property.
Extraordinarily fabulous - design, furnishings, personal touches made this a superb home away from home. Big Bend National Park and BBRanch State Park are must sees with hiking, scenery, river rafting. And the stars. WOW from your own back yard at Javelina Hideout. Will be back to this bit of heaven away from city life, lights and noise.
What a fantastic home in the solitude of the desert. The home was clean and well equipped with everything that we needed. The full kitchen served our family and friends well as we cooked several meals here. The open floor plan feels spacious and the home fits in with the surroundings. This was our first experience with an off-grid home, but we never felt deprived of anything. After spending our days in Big Bend National Park, we couldn’t wait to get back to the Javelina Hideout – especially to see the scenery light up at sunset. We want to go back and take more friends with us next year.
Nice place some parts rustic some parts refined. A wonder change of pace for a vacation
Highly recommended. This property is fantastic, particularly if you want to make day trips to Big Bend National Park or Big Bend Ranch State Park. But hanging out at the Hideout is fine as well. You're surrounded by mountains, desert, incredible views in every direction, and you are staying at a beautiful, well-appointed house. It's off-grid, but all that means is that it excels in quiet solitude while offering the ultimate in comfort with lots of amenities and all of the conveniences of home. The owner has thought of everything with fine attention to detail. A beautiful, functional kitchen, great bedroom, and outdoor sitting areas galore. The picture windows are filled by mountains in every direction. We'll be back.
We spent most of our time at Big Bend, but we did make use of the fire pit, outhouse, kitchen, and beds. I had to turn off the wifi because otherwise the kids wouldn't look up from their smartphones for 5 minutes. Views are great from the cabin. My wife and I enjoyed getting the opportunity to try off-grid style living, as we have been considering doing something similar. Overall, great place.
Absolutely loved the style of the main house and outdoor space. Was the perfect location for our stay and couldn’t have been better!!
Javelina Hideout was amazing. You have everything you need there! The sunset and sunrise each morning and evening is indescribable. You can watch it from the porch swing or out your window. The stars at night from the house are INSANE!!! JH is very clean, shower is great--the water gets nice and hot :) Outhouse is so cute and perfect! Bunkhouse is PERFECT to sleep in and no issues walking back to the main house for anything! Cooked breakfast each morning with no issues from the kitchen and ate outside each night, using the grill! Outdoor area is so cute with a hammock stand, so bring yours! We felt very safe and at home at Javelina Hideout. You are SO close to Big Bend National Park. Its an easy drive & a must! Javelina Hideout is the place to be, you will not regret staying there!!
Stayed 4 nights including the dark of the moon which revealed the greatest look at the heavens I have ever seen anywhere, simply incredible. Though off the grid, this place has all the comforts of home all powered by solar, and watered by rain collected in cisterns. Very cool. They even have a land line & Internet service too. Unique place to stay with so much to see. Highly recommend!
Overall impression of the property was excellent. The property was clean, well maintained, and pleasantly furnished. Outdoor living areas were inviting and the surrounding view was breathtaking. Especially enjoyed the evening breezes and the night sky stargazing! Close proximity to both Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. Would definitely recommend to friends and family! Overall, we had a fabulous time on our stay at Javelina Hideout!
This is the perfect place for conversation-minded people. It is extremely comfortable and clean. The off-the-grid technology is top-notch. The views, sunsets, and sunrises are spectacular. The owners took great pride in building and decorating this place. You will love the outdoor space! It is close enough to Big Big NP entrance at Study Butte (18 miles). You won't even miss the microwave as you have a full stove/oven. Bring your own food/drinks as there is no place close to purchase them. Although there is a market in Study Butte in a pinch. Restaurants are scarce, but in Terlingua the Starlight and La Kiva are ok. You should go for the experience, but the food is overpriced and not the best. Big Bend NP and Big Bend Ranch SP are the true attractions in this magical place. There is plenty to do for all abilities. Have fun!
Staying at the Javelina Hideout is like escaping to another world. A world of peace, beauty, and art; quiet and stillness. The house sits in the vast expanse of Terlingua Ranch, about a 25 minute drive from the quirky, dusty ghost town of Terlingua, TX. During the day you are greeted with views of 9-Point Mesa in the distance, ocotillo, and big blue sky. At night, you can peer into the Milky Way with your bare eyes. The property and house are decorated all about with art, and some of the amenities such as the salvaged wood bar are hand finished by the owners. The house is spacious and comfortable, light and airy, and has plenty of room indoors and out for eating and socializing. I especially enjoyed sitting around the outdoor fire pit during the evenings and gazing up at the stars. If you're looking for an eco-friendly and comfortable place to unwind and relax, this is the place for you. I wish I were there now!
If you are going to the Big Bend/Terlingua/Lajitas area, you’ve got to stay at the Javelina Hideout! It is the coolest house with amazing views and privacy. I’ve stayed in several homes in the area and at the Lodge in the Basin in BBNP and none of them give the since of being a part of this magnificent area the way Javelina Hideout does. There are plenty of areas outside the house to relax, eat and drink a beer. The big covered patio is a great outside living space with a picnic table and gas grill. There is a big fire ring out front – bring you own firewood and marshmallows! The porch swing outside the bunk house is a nice spot to have coffee in the morning. Anywhere you sit around the main house or bunk has wonderful views of the surrounding mountains, especially Nine Point Mesa. Once inside the house, the views are still amazing! Windows are everywhere – you can see the sunrise from the king bed, the bathroom and the kitchen! The huge window in the dining area has a panoramic view of Nine Point Mesa. And inside the house – WOW! Very spacious with stained concrete floors, a full kitchen with plenty of counter space, nice dishware, plenty of pots and pans and utensils, a very nice bathroom and fun art work throughout the house. The master bedroom has a king size bed, big closet and plenty of space. I slept on the roll-a-way bed (which was very comfortable, hooray memory foam) and got a great view of the stars through the picture windows in the dining room. The house has a very modern feel but is just rustic enough to fit in with the desert and the whole Terlingua vibe. It was really cool to stay in a modern off-grid house and know we were having minimal impact on the environment by conserving energy and water and minimizing our waste. Burning paper trash in the incinerator can was a neat way to get rid of paper goods. I promise you’ll enjoy staying at the Javelina Hideout! I’m already planning another trip out there and next time I want to stay on the top bunk in the bunkhouse! Dawn S.
We stayed here for 4 nights. I ended up staying in the bunkhouse while the rest of my party was in the main home. What an amazing place - both the bunkhouse and the main home! Bunkhouse is adorable, comfortable for adults, and a nice quiet space away from the main home. The windows and views were awesome, as was the large covered private porch. The main home was spectacular - nice open layout, fantastic design. The kitchen had everything we needed for 3 people (except a potato peeler!). The live edge bar was so cool - great for having a beverage and staring and the beautiful mountain. We were extremely conservative with our power usage and water usage, and were surprised how little we could get away with. We actually preferred the outhouse over the indoor flush toilet. Much better view from the throne! This place is very well designed. Overall, extremely comfortable for our party of 3, unique and well situated, we'll definitely be back and we'll be bringing more friends with us.
Wowza! In the dozen or so visits to the Big Bend area, Javelina Hideout is hands down the best accommodation I have experienced. When you go, it's best to arrive during daylight to get the full impact of the striking views all along the route from Alpine. As you approach the Hideout, you will notice how well it fits into the landscape, subdued materials & simple shapes. The interior is laid out to maximize natural light and openness. It is truly fine. Be careful though....you may be compelled to sit at the windows facing Nine Point Mesa & become paralyzed by the scenery! The kitchen is well equipped with the necessary appliances & kitchen wares for cooking & eating in. Being 100% solar does limit the use of some electrical appliances, so be prepared to do some things the old fashioned way like French press coffee & a whistling water kettle. Bring groceries at least for the first day as activities & groceries are typically at least 25 minutes away...but it is always a beautiful drive. If you've never been to this area, the best advice is to allow loads of time to do things and never be in a rush. The nice new king bed was a dream & as an extra treat, you can view Moon & Sun rises from bed! The bathroom is clean, attractive & a clever layout. The owners have really put a lot of care and thought into creating this amazing place! Oh yeh, don't forget to hang out outside at night and look at the Milky Way and maybe catch a meteor or two if you're lucky!
This is an amazing relaxing desert hideaway. Cozy and comfortable with an abundance of great views from inside and out. The dark night sky is BRILLIANT with the Milky Way and the Moon. I will definitely be back.
Went to Terlingua to spend time hiking in Big Bend National Park, and lucked out finding this gem of a place. Unlike some places in Terlingua Ranch, this house is easy to get to in any kind of car, with easy access to the main road. The home really stands out amongst the others out there due to the simple clean lines and design. Thoroughly modern and totally off the grid, the use of solar and water collection here to power the home is extremely cool. While we didn't use the oven this trip, we did use the stove and also the grill outside. Spent alot of time on the shaded porch, watching the sun rise in the morning before heading to BBNP just a short drive away. The modern conveniences of a flushing toilet, shower, refrigerator, stove, and comfy KING SIZE BED makes this place one that I will come back to again. Oh and there are windows, lots of windows and lots of views! We had fires in the pit each night, used the outdoor grill, and even used the super cool, very clean outhouse! I'll be back to the Javelina Hideout, and next time I'm bringing my bike to ride in the state park. Really a fantastic getaway here, can't recommend this place enough.
When headed to the desert for a long weekend getaway I expected very rustic, somewhat uncomfortable lodging (it is the desert after all). What I found was anything but. Javelina Hideout was the perfect combination of modern look / conveniences and true desert living. We had amazing sunrises and sunsets everyday and could easily see the Milky Way at night. The house and bunkhouse were really cool. I loved the off the grid living and quickly learned to conserve, especially water. The bunkhouse was cute but basic and really only a place for sleeping. But most of the time at the house was spent outdoors with lots of options for places to sit and enjoy the views. We had our choice of fire pits at night and found it a great place to watch the night sky. We also found the house a convenient home base for exploring the area - hiking in Big Bend and having dinner in the Ghost Town in Terlingua. Next time we'll plan for more time as there's so much to do! Overall we loved Javelinna Hideout! Can't wait to go back!
Amazing location and great attention to detail We loved every bit of the house, the property and it’s remoteness in the desert. Amazing sunsets and so many great outdoor locations to choose from: the porch, the bar, the gas fire ring and the campfire place. Plus a gas grill and a charcoal grill
