Casa del Oso, or “House of the Bear”, is a lovely and secluded home on twenty private acres of Terlingua Ranch. It is eco-friendly, with solar and wind power and rainwater catchment. Nestled in the saddle to two hills, the home has fantastic mountain views and lots of breezes. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy sunrises, sunsets, dark night skies, or a modern campfire at the propane fire pit.
This well-appointed two-bedroom home with a sleeping loft sleeps four to six. We recommend it for four or fewer. The house was custom built by the prior owners. The current owners enjoy it as their personal getaway and are proud to share it with others. After staying here once, you will want to return again and again.
The kitchen, dining room, and living room are open and spacious, with vaulted ceilings, lots of natural light, and windows for enjoying the views. The kitchen is fully equipped and stocked with all the cookware and dishes for enjoying meals together. The living room is designed for relaxing together, with comfortable seating, room to relax, charming décor, and a television with Dish Network and access to your Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services.
The bedrooms and sleeping loft will sleep four to six. Both downstairs bedrooms have a queen-sized bed. The sleeping loft has a full bed and two twin beds. The sleeping loft has a low ceiling and is ideal for children. However, we recommend that it not be used during the summer months due to heat rising into the loft area.
Outside of the house, there are shaded porches, stone patios, outdoor seating, a propane fire pit, charcoal grill, covered parking, and twenty acres of private Chihuahua desert habitat to hike and explore.
Located just 30 to 45 minutes from Big Bend National Park, Terlingua, the Rio Grande, and Big Bend Ranch State Park. You will have easy access to enjoy all the natural wonders and outdoor recreation opportunities the Big Bend. Take a scenic drive, hike the trails, raft the river, go for a horseback ride, enjoy a jeep tour, go for a ride on a mountain bike, watch the wildlife, view the star-filled night skies. The social scene is almost as dynamic as the landscape. Terlingua, the Terlingua Ghost Town, Lajitas, and Terlingua Ranch offer an assortment of dining, art, and music venues where you can eat, drink, and be merry. Or, just relax and unwind in the comfort of Casa del Oso.
TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.
Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.
People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.
The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)

We manage several properties and live few miles away. We are available by phone, text, email, or messages through Airbnb. We are typically only on site for cleaning or maintenance issues.
This house is exactly as described and very , very clean. Kitchen very well equipped. Plenty of water supplied by owner. We very much enjoyed the views and watching sunrises, sunsets, and the stars. We downgraded the overall rating only because of the driveway. It is described as well maintained gravel drive ok for sedans. That is technically accurate but it is very washboard like so our car really shook. This bothered me a bit as I sort of baby my car. However we would stay here again and bring a different vehicle.
We stayed at Casa del Oso for 4 nights in March 2021. The property is exactly as described. We enjoyed the total seclusion of this desert ranch, so quiet with beautiful mountain views. We enjoyed sunrises, sunsets, and stargazing under the dark night skies. The kitchen is well stocked and we took advantage of the charcoal grill. We loved exploring the property. It is close to Terlingua and Big Bend which is why we stayed. Thanks!
Location of the property was ideal for day trips into BB National Park and BB Ranch State Park. Front fire pit area ideal for fabulous sunset views and back porch/patio fof sun and moon rises. Quiet, quiet, quiet. Stargazing great. House became home away from home. Time of year was early November...never needed AC or heaters. A good spot if you reallu want to get away.
Just 2 of us, staying at Casa del OSO for a few nights, we loved it. This secluded place is a great gateway to Big Ben National and State Park. The view from the house is amazing and very serene, great for relaxing. The property had all the amenities we needed, we particularly enjoyed sitting by the fire pit at night enjoying the peaceful night of West Texas. Check-in and out was a breeze, everything was well detailed in the communications we had with the property owner, everything was handy to make it easy and smooth. We will be back to Casa del OSO as soon as we can ! Highly recommend if you are looking for a getaway in the Terlingua area.
Not one, but two amazing views from this house (front and back). The house was well stocked with everything needed for our stay (we brought food). Would definitely come back.
This is our second stay within 2 years and it was again excellent. It is very quiet and seated well away from everything else. We had ample energy to power everything we needed. Definitely book here if you enjoy a feeling of quiet and isolation...while still knowing you're not too far from the closest store or Big Bend National Park.
1. Make sure you download the PDF sent by email BEFORE the trip - I didn't and we just happened to notice the 1400 sign and a house that looked similar. We saved ourselved a DAY of frustration because our guts told us to turn around. GPS does not take you to house. 2. It took some getting used to the power system. We ran out of power the first night around 1:30 am. We didn't realize we could have called for assistance at that time via the landline (didn't dial 1 then the number) - Daryl was super helpful the next morning but it was a restless night due to a storm and no power. Daryl was super responsive and helpful the entire week. 3. The 4 out of 5 on cleanliness is due to the not usable mattress on the pull out couch. It was too hot to sleep upstairs but the mattress on the couch took that option off the table too. My 19 year old son slept on the couch each night. 4. I would visit Casa del Oso again with family and friends. We loved the remote location and felt good about leaving less of a carbon footprint on our vacation.
What a beautiful property and home out in West Texas! We absolutely loved our stay at Casa del Oso. We sat on the porch and watched the clouds move over the mountains, watched birds hopping in the ocotillo plants, enjoyed family game time, and watched the sunset over the mountains around the fire pit. The home was clean and well-appointed. We had everything we needed. Good proximity to Big Bend National Park.
We loved our stay at Casa Del Oso. The views from there were amazing, especially the sunsets. You can see a billion stars and the milky way at night. We stayed over spring break with our 16 year old son and enjoyed every minute. The house was very clean. The only minor issue we really had was with the coffee maker and that was probably just our user error since it was a camp style Mr. Coffee maker. But we discovered the percolator on the counter and it was perfect. We were careful to conserve water when showering, etc. The owners provided plenty of bottled water for our use. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend to others. The owners are very nice. Looking forward to our next visit.
We were pleased with the privacy, remoteness and gorgeous skies at night. It is well-situated in terms of great views. The house has a well-stocked kitchen and wonderful space for sharing family time. Supplies and services are a fair distance away, but easily accessible.
This house is literally my favorite place I have ever rented for vacation anywhere. The house itself was comfortable, plenty of space for my family of four, well equipped for cooking. The water is not potable but they supplied plenty of bottled water. The setting was absolutely stunning. It feels like you are completely alone in a vast rugged and gorgeous wilderness. There are sweeping views of the mountains, sunrise from the comfortable back porch, and sunset from the lovely front sitting area with propane fire pit. We simply could not have hoped for anything better. Drive to study Butte was about 30 minutes
We used this place as a basecamp for hiking Big Bend. It is exactly 40 minutes from the west park entrance, so you have at least an hour drive to most of the main trailheads. That said, it was nice to have a quiet getaway with full kitchen to return to. Would have given 5 stars but for the following: When we woke up the first morning (well before daylight because we wanted to get into the park early), nothing worked--no lights, no water, no flushing toilet. When we reached cell service at 7:30am, we sent the property manager an email notifying them. By noon, we hadn't heard back. So we sent a text message, and called all the numbers listed (only one number let us leave a message, which sounded like the same number we sent the text to.) We didn't receive a response until after 2:30pm - in the text they let us know they were sorry they missed the messages and were trying to reach their solar tech. We asked to be kept updated because if there was no power, we would have been forced to find alternate arrangements. But we never heard anything back on the status of things, even with multiple inquiries as the day drew to a close. Thus, we left the park a little earlier than we would have to be sure we made it back with daylight left in case we were forced to move elsewhere. When we got back, everything was working and worked fine the rest of the trip. But the unknown that day caused some stress and affected our day plans because we had no idea if we'd have power when we returned. This could have easily been avoided with some communication. Also, watch out for rattlesnakes! We got surprised by one right under the front door.
This was my second to stay as Casa del Oso. I rarely stay at the same VRBO/AirBNB twice as I like to try new places. But this home is an exception. I love the views from this home, both from the front of the house by the firepit and also the back of the home which looks out over a valley.. If you are looking to get away from the rat race or traffic found in large cities like I am from(Houston), then this is the place to go to if you ever visit the Big Bend area of Texas. Very remote and basically no neighbors. Star gazing in this part of the world is beyond belief. There is basically no light pollution and you can easily see the Milky Way. I saw so many satellites I lost count. The house is wonderfully set up with 2 bedrooms across from each other and 1 bathroom. Slept wonderfully all 3 nights. No traffic or sirens to wake me up during the night. In the morning, nothing beats having a hot cup of coffee(maybe a small pastry alongside) and just sitting outside and appreciating the views and nature. One morning a pack of wild javelinas(pig like animals) were crossing the road down below the home. Must have been about 20 of them with several little ones tagging along. I typically visit the Big Bend area during late October and November as I find the weather to be optimal. During the day it was in the 70s and at night it was in the 50s. Never needed to use the swamp a/c that is found in the house. Since it's on a hill, we just opened the windows and let the gentle breezes cool down the house if it felt to warm. Late afternoon/early evening was wonderful to watch the setting sun over the southwest mountains. Especially with a nice glass of wine! In summary, a fantastic place to stay once again. Is another visit here in the works? You bet.
The property was a great location for an adult getaway. The fire pit was amazing view of the stars and we saw deer and other animals. The drive to and from the park was longer than we had planned but Big Bend is just ‘big’ (and have us time to relax our legs 😊). The hilltop location offered amazing views from all sides. Beds were great and house was very clean. Kitchen was well equipped and the large supply of bottled water was very much appreciated. We had to make one call to the owners to clarify how to turn on the heaters but they quickly answered and helped. We would definitely stay here again if we come back to the area. Thank you !!!!
This house was perfect for what we were hoping for on our trip to Big Bend. The views from the home are amazing, it is peaceful and quiet and not too far from the park. Would definitely recommend in the future.
We loved the view! Breathtaking- well equipped for such a remote place.
Very nice, private and secluded. Property Manager was very nice and allowed us to check in early as we arrived earlier than expected. Clean and comfortable. Loved the firepit and back porch. Would definitely stay again.
We had a wonderful time! We enjoyed sitting on the back porch in the mornings and the evenings. We explored the hills around the cabin. The cabin had everything we needed. We even were able to watch UT football.
The house was phenomenal. Located on a hill with a beautiful view and not too many other houses nearby or in sight. It got warm because it was June, but the house was great and we had no issues with electricity, water, etc. Would recommend and do again.
What a wonderful experience. This place is isolated and very quiet. The views are great. Wild animals will visit. Using natural energy felt great. It was an excellent escape from our everyday life. Very close to Big Bend park which has beautiful views and many trails to hike. Would certainly stay again. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
We loved this property for two main reasons: (1) smooth access to Big Bend for day hiking; and (2) amazing views from the house. The house is far enough away from the lights in town for unobstructed views of night time stargazing and warming up in front of the propane firepit. The house sits up on hill, with valley views in both directions which made for great bird watching in the mornings over a nice cup of coffee. Definitely will re-book on our next trip back to Big Bend.
Beautifully decorated. Well stocked kitchen. Comfortable in every way. My wife and I enjoyed the National Park and surrounding area. It was great. We will be back.
The cabin itself is nice and comfortable. The location is beautiful for sunsets, but being 35 minutes away from Terlingua was a little tiresome. The fact that there was no cell coverage was a bit of a problem, but having a landline, WiFi and Dish TV was a plus. Janet, you might want to think about a real coffee pot. Luckily, I discovered Espresso y poco Mas in Terlingua.
One of those rare places that exceeds expectations. Secluded but not difficult to get to, comfy and cozy with everything you need to relax, and an amazing outdoor area with absolutely beautiful views for sunset (front porch) or sunrise (back porch). Already looking forward to returning.
This place is amazing!
Great place, very well stocked and taken care of.
It was totally different having solar power and water catchment as we had never used that before. It worked well and made us much more conscious about how we used electricity and water. The star filled sky was awesome. the house was great. It was spacious and comfortable and very private. We felt like we were the only people out there which was fabulous and very relaxing.
Off the beaten path, just what the family and I needed to rest and recharge. We so enjoyed our stay!
This is a nice remote desert getaway about 30 minutes North of Terlingua, with beautiful views in all directions. We spent a week exploring the area, and this was a perfect base camp!
Absolutely met and exceeded our expectations. We had a fabulous time and enjoyed the house and amenities. We will definitely stay again and recommend Casa del Oso to everyone!
Very Clean with a great open plan. Cool that home used Solar and Rainwater. Water pressure with the pump was little low but not a problem. Home was very well stocked with essentials; but needed some hot pads. Loft a little warm, as noted, and would be nice to add a floor fan. Views were amazing from all sides.
It’s a lovely, quaint little house with amazing views! Living accommodations was everything we needed during our vacation to Big Bend National Park, which is about 30mins away. We enjoyed watching the sunrise/sunsets in the cozy rocking chairs on the porches each day, as well as the wonderful night sky! The house itself is a comfortable size, and we had no issue with the solar power or water. We would recommend this rental to anyone vacationing in this area — you won’t regret it!
The property is very nice and all the things you need are there. You have a beautiful look at the surrounding mountains. We had unfortunately no sunshine and a lot of rain. Still the state and national parks were beautiful. You don't need a 4wheel drive car to reach the house. Only when it has rained a lot it can be a challenge to reach the last part to the house.
We really enjoyed our stay here! It was very clean and the view was outstanding! Would highly recommend this place to others.
I loved it there and didnt want to leave !! Nice and clean house. Can get pretty warm in the house but I didnt mind it much. The view is amazing !! Be careful with using too much electricity because it is solar powered. We couldnt get the firepit lit but not a big deal. The sky at night literally took my breath away, we could even see the milky way so bright ! Overall I loved that place so so much and will plan on going back asap! Definitely reccomended!! One word- GO!!! It is totally worth every penny !!!
We actually did not stay at this location. Approximately 3 hours after arrival, the electricity turned off. Jane Eby, the property manager, immediately got use into another house. The whole experience went well. Very good job by Janet and her staff.
We just had an amazing stay, sitting on the back porch to see the sun rise and on the front for the sunset. Great location for Big Bend adventures. 20 minutes from the park. We could see the Milky Way just overhead! We Picked up groceries in Alpine on your way - no grocery store in Terlingua. no problems with the rental. Management was very attentive and call to see if we were OK.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the isolation of this solar powered home during our five night stay. Never an issue with the power, but we were always out hiking during daylight hours. We ran the evaporative cooler at night to keep the temperature comfortable. Temps were in the upper 80s and 90s during our stay. We were conservative with water use, since water must be hauled to this location. Don’t know if the water is considered safe to drink, but we drank it with no resulting problems. It’s a good 35-40 minute drive to the west entrance to Big Bend. It is possible to take a dirt road into the northern end of the park for some true back country experience (road comes out a couple miles south of the Persimmon Gap entrance.) The property managers very good to deal with.
Clean little house with all the amenities. Nice kitchen with large center island. Comfortable beds with views of the stars. Large bathroom with shower/bath. It is on solar and water catchment, but with a little conservation we didn't have any issues. I recommend this rental with easy access to the Terlingua Ranch Lodge, Big Bend and Terlingua! Hope to be back soon!!
We absolutely loved staying here!! It's a beautiful house on top of 20 acres and has a spectacular view of the sunrise and sunset. Definitely make sure you follow the instructions they send you to get there. You do not have any cell service when staying there (they do have a landline if you need it and just in case you need the property manager) but the wifi works great if you want to be connected somehow, we liked staying unplugged. We enjoyed cooking out and sitting by the fire pit watching the sunset with a few beers. We had a few issues with the power and water (solar powered) and the property managers were very nice and came out immediately after calling them so they were very attentive to the problem and tried to fix it quickly. Thank y'all for a lovely stay!
