The Hummingbird, on the Caribbean Sea, offers quiet and privacy on a long stretch of beach. Beyond the spacious seaside terrace is the clear, turquoise blue water of the Caribbean Sea's Balara Bay. The Hummingbird is ON THE BEACH. Take our private driveway from the Queen's Highway to a breathtaking setting. The home is surrounded with gardens filled with bougainvillea, hibiscus, and numerous other tropical flowers and plants. The HUMMINGBIRD's charm and character include a Savannah stone exterior, terraces, an acre of private grounds and tropical gardens, and a beach with a large Tiki Dome for seaside shade and comfort. Our beach is calm, shallow and safe for water play. Tropical foliage surrounds the home and property inviting peace and serenity and quiet.
All rooms have seaviews. The spacious private master bedroom is situated in a small wing of its own. The bedroom has AC, ceiling fan, and TV and en suite bathroom. The guest bedroom has two twin beds and a king conversion kit. It also has an en suite bath with a large, walk-in shower. The front room features couch, loveseat, two upholstered chairs. A sunroom with wide window expanse, adjoins the front room providing additional comfortable seating for quiet relaxation. The well-equipped kitchen includes a breakfast bar and table seating with 8 feet of window-views to the sea. Sliding glass doors, and cathedral ceilings give the home an open, tropical atmosphere. The interior is comfortable and inviting with rattan furniture and original works of local artists.
Hummingbird's Balara Bay Beachfront has a stretch of beach that border the Caribbean Sea. You can walk all the way to the old docks at the far end of Balara Bay. Kayaks are available for water excursions on Balara Bay and across to Levy Island. Balara Bay offers our guests bonefishing as well as shelling. Our gardens surround the home and attract mockingbirds and hummingbirds. Hummingbird's Balara Bay beachfront is premier Caribbean property. We have a small, 1250 square foot home, on beautiful waterfront that warrants a 'manor' house. The home is private, unpretentious, comfortable, and inviting on an extraordinary piece of Caribbean beachfront. Come visit us. Our guests return.
Hummingbird's Floor Plan/Special Features: The master bedroom wing is as close to the Caribbean as you can get! A pleasure to watch / listen to the varying moods, colors, sounds of the sea. The guest bedroom is across the house. This arrangement of rooms with the 'living area' in between, offers welcome privacy, even when two couples share the home, or when a family brings children. The sun room, front room, kitchen and breakfast room separate the two bedroom areas. In addition to the Caribbean sea breezes, the house has a wonderful air-flow pattern with its many windows and doors. Ceiling fans are throughout the home. The home and location offer a wide diversity of activities. For the sports enthusiast, swim, jog, fish, scuba, snorkel. For the relaxer, sunbathe or locate a good book. Something for everyone.
My family, with two small children age 3 and 1, had a wonderful week at Hummingbird House for a quarantine-friendly beach week in the COVID era. Beautiful views, kid-friendly waterfront (bring water shoes necessary), and lots of extras that made it easy for us - kayaks, games, booster seat, even a spare car seat. The owner was a pleasure to deal with and was so sweet in making sure we had everything we needed. Our kids especially enjoyed running around in her beautifully landscaped yard, which was completely private and safe from other vehicles. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Lovely property right on the beach. Perfect for walking the beach and watching the sun rise and set. Comfy, cozy accommodations that has everything. Tiki Hut an added bonus to stay shaded during the heat of the day. Perfect for four people. Bedrooms on opposite sides of house to allow for privacy.
We had a wonderful time! The owner thought of everything at this place. She is such a nice lady. The house was warm and welcoming. Would definitely recommend it. Hope to return next year and the year after that and the year after that...
We loved the house and the property. The decor is rustic but very comfortable. The property was very clean and was incredibly well equipped. Marian was a gem to work with and very responsive to all of our questions. The location is central to everything and some of the island's best beaches. We will definitely be coming back.
We stayed for a week in January and could not have been happier with the Hummingbird. It was the perfect location for our trips around Eleuthera, and Marian has done a phenomenal job with upkeep for the house. It was impeccably clean! The kayaks were great for exploring the bay, and we loved having the beach so close. We can't wait to come back to the island, and we'll definitely be staying at the Hummingbird again.
It was just my husband and I there for the week. Both rooms and bathrooms were very spacious and the kitchen and sitting areas were great too. The location of this home is just north of Governor's Harbour, which was incredibly convenient for us. It was the first time we had ever been to the Island and being centrally located and close to Governor's Harbour was ideal. Marian, the owner, was very kind and informative. Really had detailed information as to where to go, how to get there, places to eat etc. The home was spotless and had great Wifi - which we both needed for work - an abundance of CD's to watch, A/C in the main room, a washer, kayaks. etc. The property itself is beautifully landscaped and the beach is incredible. The entire time we were there, we saw only one individual walking his dog on the beach - for 8 days!!! You can swim out quite far in front of the home and still be able to touch. The only downside for us was that we like to walk long beaches - this one doesn't allow for that but there are so many close by that you can walk so we took advantage of that. I would highly recommend this property and location and would definitely stay there again!
The house and the beach was perfect.
We had the pleasure of staying at the Hummingbird for 6 nights, and we are not ready to leave. The fully stocked house has everything you could need at your home away from home. Marion is a doll and was great to work with. The beach is shelly and rocky, so be sure to bring water shoes. We loved the Tiki Dome which provided welcomed shade from the heat. The house has lots of labels which provide information which was very helpful. I would stay at the Hummingbird again in a heartbeat and I cant wait to vacation at this lovely house again.
The Hummingbird is a cozy home base for a visit to Eleuthera. The property's biggest assets are its location and amenities. It is a mile or two from Governor's Harbour and centrally located on the island. It is about an hour from the northern sites -- the ferries to Harbor Island and Spanish Wells, Glass Window Bridge, Queen's Bath -- and about an hour from the southern sites -- the rocky road to Lighthouse Point. Marian has supplied the home with everything any active tourist might need on the island: kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear, flashlights, beach chairs and a travel cooler. (We couldn't even imagine the money we saved from renting or purchasing all these things -- we kayaked three times, took the chairs and cooler and snorkel gear to several beaches, used the flashlights for Hatchet Bay Cave.) We also liked the set up of the home. It comes with two bedrooms with a bathroom attached to each on opposite sides of the home. The property provides maximum privacy, in the home and out. It is situated on Balara Bay, and you'll probably have the beach and bay to yourselves the entire time. We did! The home is not sleek and modern if you are looking for that sort of thing. But it has everything one needs (fully equipped kitchen -- there are two grocery stores in Governor's Harbour) for a comfortable stay on the island. The home has a lovely patio facing the beach and a Tiki Hut closer to the water. The grounds are meticulous with flowers and butterflies everywhere. We loved our time at The Hummingbird and would stay here again. Thank you Marian!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hummingbird. Comfortable accommodations, great location, very private and central location with easy access to both ends of the island. Convenient to GH. The owner has left many notes around the house to help out. Definitely don’t come without water shoes. Makes a huge difference. The owner had the best recommendation for food which is to pick up prepared meals in town from Shauna’s. Reasonably priced and good food. Not open Saturday or Sunday and sells out by 12:30 each day. Also cheap and good is Pammy’s. Everything costs twice as much so be prepared to have lots of cash. We enjoyed Tippy’s and Buccaneer Inn however the best food we had all week was from the Surf Shack in Gregory Town as you head north to a must see: Glass Window Bridge. Worth the drive. The only decent shop I found was Blue Seahorse in GH. Loved their handmade jewelry and wooden boxes. We did spear fishing and snorkeling with Jeremy Lewis out of James Cistern and offshore fishing through Paul Petty. Both were good guides. We found a real super market in Rock Sound and bought some fresh food items from the Island Farm as you head south. One of the best vacations we’ve ever had but also one of the most expensive. Still we hope to return one day.
This property is great! Right on the water and as many reviews have stated, it is well stocked with paper goods, linens, trash bags, some spices, etc. etc. etc. etc. and so organized! Lots of little notes everywhere! :) We were there 10 days and didn't see or need to call property manager for anything. I had never been to Eluethera before and despite all my reading ahead of trip, I was amazed at how quiet and isolated it felt with some beautiful beaches if you are up for exploring! We Just relaxed a lot! I read 4 books! The sun is great, the water is so warm, we did not have luck fishing right out front but there are other areas to go fishing! We brought food and only ate out maybe 4 times while there. We are very glad we brought frozen chicken, steak, cheese and snack stuff. The value added tax on top of 18% gratuity at restaurants makes eating out very pricey. There is everything you need at the house to cook meals and a grill out on the wonderful patio! We brought plenty of bug spray and used it every afternoon/evening but really shortly after sunset we had to head inside in order to not be bitten alive! We were only 2 so we only used the master bedroom which was lovely with a big ceiling fan and with the windows open we fell asleep to the sound of the ocean each night (and woke up to it of course each morning) and it was heavenly. We did not use the air conditioning at all while we were there. You do absolutely need water shoes for exploring the beach and entering the very front part of the ocean right out back from the house. There was a couple in the other rental house next door and we still had complete privacy and rarely saw them. Bring your own books! Not much shopping on the island! So, wonderful vacation, my hubby was even able to watch the Twins baseball games while there.....on our I pad..... Everyone we met on the island was very friendly! Hated to leave!
We had a lovely stay and enjoyed the quiet!
Hummingbird cottage is remote and well appointed with everything you could need and more! Perfect for relaxing. We used the kayaks and paddle boards and loved playing bocce ball on the beach. Labels on everything are very helpful. We will definitely go back!
My daughter and I enjoyed a wonderful week at this beautiful cottage. An amazing property with all possible amenities right on the Caribbean side on the beach. Could not have been better
Exceeded my expectations.
My husband and I with another couple stayed in Hummingbird cottage for 7 nights but we could have stayed much longer. It is very private with practically the entire cove to ourselves. Marion provides kayaks and paddle boards so you are able to enjoy the water whenever you want. And the cove is very calm. Just bring swim shoes since there are a lot of shells and coral that make walking into the water a little uncomfortable if you are bare footed. The sunset are nice to watch from the hut on the beach. The patio provides a place to have a drink and soak up the sun. The cottage itself is roomy with very cute decor. It is well stocked. And I mean really stocked. And very clean. Marion is next door if you need anything. She is an ideal host to help in any way. However, she is a busy women enjoying the island herself so we didn't see her a lot. She respected our space. If you are coming to Eleuthera for the privacy and to avoid the crowds then you are in the right place. Don't come if you are looking for resorts, entertainment or upscale dining. But you do have your local entertainment which is lot of fun. The Bahamians like to dance. They are fun and friendly people. There are places to eat which have fabulous food with a view as well. And the beaches. Well there are just to many to name, each one as beautiful as the next. Do your research before you go. Take advise from people who have been there. Some suggestions: Dining - Pascals (5 minutes from Hummingbird), The Wild Orchid in Rock Sound, Sunset beach bar (Good music too), Rainbow Bar and Grill, 1648 at French Leave resorts (pricey), and of course Tippy's on the Altantic side. Beaches: Lighthouse Beach (you must have an SUV but worth it), Twin Coves which is reachable by foot from Hummingbird, and of course the beach right there at the cottage. Misc: You must rent a car which can be arranged through Rhonda Rolle. Ask Marion! Be prepared to spend a lot of money at the grocery store since the food is expensive. Sometimes it was just less expensive to go out to dinner. negatives: There is a lot of trash along the roadsides due to the expense of getting garbage off the island but the cottage didn't have any trash around it and it was easy to get our trash to the curbside. Watch out for the noseeums. 1 out of 4 people react to them and it can make your vacation uncomfortable. Bring insect repellent with deet. One of our best rental properties. Thanks Marion, Linda and Dave
Marian was a fantastic host and the house was perfect in every way. Right on the beach, close to town and had everything we could possibly need. We loved every minute of our Eleutheran vacation.
My husband and I just returned from a wonderful vacation where this charming stone beach cottage was our home for the week. The house was perfect for our vacation! It was extremely clean, airy, and bright with multiple sliding glass doors that looked out onto the water and private beach. The owner had thought of everything needed for our stay. No shortage of kitchen items and plenty of linens. The location was close to Governors Harbour and very private. We enjoyed spending time each day walking the beach and enjoying the tiki dome. Eleuthera was perfect for a quiet and relaxing vacation. We had a great time - thank you!
What a fantastic location for our '2 couples' vacation. Beautifully kept grounds and very private area. All amenities on premises delivered as promised. We are always skeptical of trying new vacation properties, but the Stone Beach cottage and Marian Macy (the owner) made this 2 week stay feel more like home away from home. Excellent driveway access and parking area for those with a vehicle. We had no issues with anything on the premises or the waterfront. There is a thin line of coral break before the beach and water, however there are a couple of sandy approaches which made easy access for swimming, fishing and kayaking. The two bedrooms are located at opposite corners of the cottage which provided lots of privacy. Living room, dining room, kitchen and sitting room also provided more than enough room for the 4 of us. We anticipated driving up and down the lion's share of the island, but as it happened, for the most part, we were content to enjoy hanging around the patio, tiki hut and ocean front. Just can't say enough good things about this property in our experience. We would return to Stone Beach in a heartbeat, but for a longer length of stay !
Beautiful cottage with everything we needed except food. Private beach with good snorkeling around the bend. Fantastic views, including the stars at night. Owner very accommodating. Great location for visiting nearby beaches. You can’t go wrong with the Hummingbird!
Wonderful location on the Caribbean side of Eleuthera, a short drive from Governor's Harbour. Good water access for the kayaks and paddleboards. The access road is well groomed, the gardens and landscaping very attractive. The Hummingbird cottage was charming, roomy enough for 4, and nicely oufitted with everything we needed. Appliances all worked well. The owner lives next door, and was very helpful when we had a question or request. I hope that I have the opportunity to stay here again, and have no hesitation in recommending this property.
We stayed at the Hummingbird from 2/7/18 - 2/17/18. We LOVED the house. It is equipped with everything you could dream of. We loved going to sleep at night listening to the gentle waves. We never saw another person on the beach and loved shelling right out our door. The SUP and kayaks were so nice to use in the calm carribean bay. Close to Governors Harbor for shopping & dining. We would not hesitate to rent this place again.
Wonderful place everything you need and convenient and beautiful. Host very kind and helpful
We loved this home. The owners set it up so that both bedrooms are on opposite sides of the house for privacy. Each had there own bathroom, one of which also served the living area. Everything one might need to is available and clearly labeled. The grounds are very nice in the front, the back has a beautiful cement patio and wall, with plenty of lounging space. We got plenty of use out of the kayaks and paddle boards. Rick caught bonefish, 50 yards away from the back door. We used the Wifi, the TV, Patti refused to go near the washing machine, but there is one available, everything worked perfectly. We highly reccomend Hummingbird. This property is located just a couple of minutes north of Govornors Harbor. Because a lot of restaurants were closed during off season we ended up finding Leo Rose in James Cistern, where Lawrence puts out some great local fare, as well as burgers that Patti loved. We also found the Front Porch in Hatchett Bay. We both think that this has the best food on the island. Francis and Gina are two of the nicest people we have met in a world of incredibly nice people.
The Hummingbird is a perfect cottage at a fantastic part of Eleuthera! Everything you need is here - as well as a very helpful guide about getting here and what you need that the owner provides. The cottage itself is clean and well kept, with everything you need for cooking, relaxing, the views, and adventuring! The kayaks and stand up paddle boards are a HUGE plus! There is a lot of reef about 1/4 mile north, right along the shore. There, we found the best snorkeling! Thousands of fish, and even some rays! We definitely plan on returning!
This is long overdue! We stayed for two weeks in April 2016 and will definitely come back! The home is seriously so stocked with everything you would need. We didn't have to really bring anything except our clothing and snorkel gear. The impression we got is that when someone stays here they leave behind things like sunscreen, bug spray, first aid stuff, and also pantry items like olive oil and balsamic vinegar! The home is perfect!! Wi-Fi was excellent. We paddleboarded every day and say sharks, rays, and tons of fish just around the bend. Excellent snorkeling, probably the best we saw on the island. We rented a car and this was definitely essential for us as we did several trips into Gregory Town for food and alcohol. Some days we just hung out and chilled on the beach. No see ums were pretty bad but we figured out by day 5 that they don't like oily skin so we applied sunscreen then a layer of Hawaiian Tropic dark tanning oil and they left us alone. We were super oily though!! We didn't bring the kids and were grateful because there was really not a lot for them to be doing other than splashing around or shelling. This was the PERFECT romantic get away for us and we are so very thankful for the owners amazing home.
This was a very charming cottage in a great location. At first we were not sure of the beach with the rocky shore, but once we started to explore, we found it to be amazing. There is a nice sandy area to take the Kayaks into the water as well as take a cooling dip anytime of the day. Even when the weather was rough, it was still calm enough to swim. Low tide meant lots of opportunities to find some amazing miniature shells. We did some snorkeling right off the back of the house and saw some really neat fish, as well as a couple small barracudas and starfish. We took the kayaks out several times to watch the sunset and once went around the small island offshore. The island itself is not accessible and is privately owned, but to see the crystal clear water in the protected reef behind it was totally worth the effort. The water was so calm on some days, that it was like a lake. We did have one neighbor, but we hardly saw them so it was our own private beach for most of the time. The house itself was well stocked and provided for all our needs. The owners made sure that everything was available. The only suggestion is to add a blender for making yummy island drinks. Maybe there was one there, but I did not see it. The only issues we had was the bed was a bit hard for us and only the bedrooms provide window air conditioning which I can understand since electricity on the island is so expensive, but it did get very hot sometimes. Of course, you can always cool off with a jump in the water. Do bring lots of bug spray as the mosquito's were really bad. I would suggest a high percentage Deet since the 25% I used did not seem to phase them a bit. Also, bring water shoes since most of the beaches have rocky shorelines. I would highly suggesting utilizing the Beach Book that is available in the cottages. We got our own copy before going and were able to go to many beaches that most visitors probably would never find. Also, rent a vehicle with high clearance because to get to those amazing, secluded beaches you will be going down some very interesting roads. Just note that when you are driving down a road, and thinking that it sure does seem to be turning into a hiking trail and how am I going to turn around, you break out into the open to amazing views of the ocean. The Caribbean side did seem to be calmer, but both sides were great for swimming. For snorkeling though, I would suggesting staying on the Caribbean side.
You would be hard pressed to find a better vacation rental at this price. The beach is by far one of the best I have been to . The home is very well equipped . We were warned of possible septic issues. Which made us very concerned . So we tried to be very efficient ,with our showers . One would shower in the am, the other in the evening. With that being said. The bugs were very difficult . I guess it's just part of the island. I do recommend the owners & their property. Also Ronda for car rental. The other property is very new. You should consider it first.
We enjoyed our stay at the Hummingbird. Marian, was very helpful and the house had everything we needed. We will recommend this house to our family and friends. It is definitely a gem with an absolutely gorgeous view.
We had a wonderful time at the Hummingbird. They have absolutely everything you could want and the home is organized extremely well. Would love to go back sometime.
So sad it has to end!!! The Hummingbird was so amazing.... we totally enjoyed this lovely cottage for the past 10 days. It has everything you could possibly need for a beach. The beach out front is gorgeous and love being able to walk in the crystal clear shallow waters ..... lots of beautiful shells.... very private!!! Booking this cottage was very easy and great response time..... if your thinking about renting, don't wait it books quick.... LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION..... food, gas beverages, shopping all within 5 minutes in Governors Harbor. Thank you Marian and Gil for having us and sharing your piece of paradise with our family. We will be back!!! The Ford Family The Ford Family
Pack up your beachwear and go! Just spent 11 amazing days at the Hummingbird and are planning our next trip. Marian is the master of organization and you'll be able to find what you need. If you're like me you tend to over pack. Don't! The home has everything. Just bring your personal items, beachwear, good water shoes, sunblock, bug spray (for dusk and dawn) and you'll be good to go. Kayaks: They were a blast. We kayak at home on rivers and lakes, so the ocean experience was new to us. The water is super clear so bring your GoPro or waterproof camera. We spotted fish, stingray, jellyfish and even a reef shark over by Levy island. Fly-Fishing: Husband said he saw quite a few bonefish out front, they just weren't biting. Mhmm. Swimming: Once you are a few steps out you hit pure sand and the most amazing turquoise water. The beach isn't what I consider rocky, it's shell-y along the waters edge. You are literally walking on thousands of shells. The Beach Book even mentions Balara Bay for shelling. Picked up some amazing beach glass as well. Be sure to walk/swim/snorkel around the point to the right for loads of good finds. Speaking of The Beach Book. GET IT. We had *so* much fun finding different beaches, it was quite the adventure. Make sure you rent an SUV as cars will not make it down most of the beach roads we took. Wear good water shoes! Some of the paths to the beach are tricky. Twin Coves beach and the old Club Med beach were our favorites and both are within 10 minutes of the property. Most of what I consider the pretty beaches are near the central part of Eleuthera, so the house location is very convenient. The outdoor space is large with tons of room on the patio, sand and tiki area. Plenty of seats for reading, reclining and enjoying a drink or two. Or three. ;) Several days we never left the house. I read on the beach in what has to be the most comfortable beach chair I've ever sat in. Seriously. You'll know what I'm talking about once you get there. Basically, go. The house is nice, in a private location and quiet (as is the island). Keep in mind it's hard to get things to the islands so they take care of what they have. If you're looking for a 5-star experience then Eleuthera isn't for you. We are in our late 30's and have two teenage daughters. They were left at home for this trip but we wouldn't hesitate to bring them along next time. PS. Governors Harbour Friday Night Fish Fry: The Rum Bubbas are no joke.
We can not thank the wonderful owners enough for allowing us to rent this beautiful home on a perfect beach. We have rented many places and found this home to be the most organized. Everyone was so nice and friendly from the owners, to the maintenance man to the groundskeeper. The island was so beautiful and lush with beautiful beach after beautiful beach. It was wonderful to return to Balara Bay each day and go for a swim just a few steps away. We can't wait to return and will be forever thankful to the owners for the kindness and hospitality. Truly wonderful people.
This is our last night at the Hummingbird and before we all get back to our busy life, I just wanted to thank you for renting this paradise to us. My wife and I had such a restful time, more like a second honeymoon! Myself, I am now feeling completely decompressed and recharged, ready for the daily stress that comes with the job awaiting for me in Miami...;-) We are looking forward to repeat this experience next year, possibly with our grown up children. Both your houses are beautiful, comfortable and you have decorated them very tastefully. Many thanks again for the opportunity to enjoy the Bahamas on your sensational beach.! I have highly recommended this beautiful property and its lovely beach and surroundings to all my friends. Kayaking was also very rewarding during the calm sunset. I will cherish this experience for years to come...and will return again. Warm regards. DT
My husband and I have come to love Eleuthera. This home is in the perfect central location, within a few miles of all the best restaurants and beaches and grocery stores. The owner is very easy and helpful to deal with. The home is kept up very well, with all the necessities. We cook in for most meals, but enoy the Beach House on Banks Road when dining out. A stroll on the beach right in front of the house provides shells of all kinds. The residents of Eleuthera are the friendliest. This house has all the outdoor toys you could ask for; there are kayaks, both single and double, paddle boards and snorkeling equipment. The water in front of the house is very shallow for quite a ways, making for a safe swimming area. We would recommend this house for any age group.
My husband and I look forward to this trip each year - and all because of this amazing home! We have had the pleasure of being Marian and Gil's guests for 6 years now and each year we are more amazed by how beautiful the homes and property really are! EVERYTHING you could possibly want or need is already there..........right down to the beach towels and chairs and bags! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the charm of Hummingbird and Marian is more than accommodating with requests! If there is ever an issue, the caretaker is right there to assist with one phone call. I remember the first time we pulled into the property and we were literally speechless. Having your morning coffee on the big, blue Caribbean..............it doesn't get much better than that! You will never be disappointed by this home or it's owners!
Hummingbird lived up to all our expectations (and more). It was the best equipped and organized cottage we have ever rented. Its location on Balara Bay with a sand beach outside our door was perfect. The owners have carefully thought out and have provided everything needed to be comfortable and to enjoy a stress-free vacation. They are knowledgeable about Eleuthera and were great sources of local information for our travels around the island. Having fishing kayaks available, we were able to catch fish for our dinners (we cooked most meals in). WiiFi access was appreciated. Governors Harbour and many beaches were a short distance away - by car or by walking. Likewise, the Governors Harbour Airport was close by with ready access to car rentals and taxis. We are looking forward already to our return next year.
We have come to love Eleuthera as a perfect locale for a quiet, relaxed Caribbean vacation. Hummingbird has been our base to explore the island for three years now, and it is perfectly located, not far from the Governor's Harbour Airport, near the town, and central to the island's geography. It's about an hour's drive either way to explore the entire length of the island, and take advantege of numerous deserted beaches and coves, visit the small villages, and enjoy the largely unspoiled rural scenery and ocean vistas. Hummingbird is comfortable, well cared for, and fully equipped. The friendly and helpful owners live next door, but are extremely respectful of the privacy of their guests. Paddle boards, kayaks, and beach chairs allow for lots of activity without ever leaving the cottage, and the view from Hummingbird across Balara Bay to Levi Island is as pretty as any in the Caribbean. Would I recommend Hummingbird to others? If you are looking for a quiet, comfortable, relaxing vacation far away from the crowds and casinos and craziness, and might enjoy a week or two in Paradise... then consider Hummingbird. But my three week booking is permanent, so don't even think about trying to get my spot!
My family of 4 adults stayed here in July and it was all we expected and more. Centrally located minutes from Governor's Harbour, this classic stone cottage sits right on the water's edge offering wondering views of the bay. The owners have thought of everything - there's extra beach hats in case you didn't bring one, maps, books, and every utensil needed for cooking (we did some of our own) and drinks. Bedrooms are a good size and the layout doesn't feel cramped despite being a true cottage. The character of this home won me over when making a reservation and I wasn't disappointed. Bugs are to be expected as with anywhere - so bring DEET - and use it regularly. Can't wait to return to the Hummingbird!
This charming beachfront house was a wonderful home for a relaxing winter vacation. It was stocked with everything one could possibly need, and the owners (who vacation on the adjoining property and happened to be there at the time) went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. We were there with our 19-month-old son, and it was great to be so close to the beach so we could all just walk out the screen door and down to the water without any hassle. The shells on the beach out back are so varied and fascinating! The garden in front is also gorgeous and we enjoyed looking for lizards. The pack-n-play at the house was a wonderful bonus too. The only two things we can complain about are 1) the bugs. Definitely bring bug spray and use it liberally. Some people (like my wife) are more sensitive than others and the bites can be very itchy. But this apparently is a problem everywhere in the Bahamas (except in Nassau where they spray). And 2) the wall separating the second bedroom from the living room doesn't go all the way up to the high ceiling, so we were very hesitant to use the TV and DVD player when our son was asleep. There is a small TV in the master bedroom but the satellite dish system annoyingly requires the channel to be changed in the living room. Eleuthera, especially staying at this house, was a fantastic vacation destination for us. There aren't many real sightseeing destinations on the island, so we had no choice but to relax, go to some of the many gorgeous beaches, and hang out on the patio at the house. We would definitely recommend this house and Eleuthera as a whole!
This beach house has everything and more that you need for the holiday of a lifetime. We could not fault it and it was far better than we had hoped for. The weather was perfect and only added to the experience. It was so relaxing, the Island is very welcoming and the people very friendly. Although it was out of season this did not deter from our enjoyment of the holiday and we will certainly go again.
My family and I stayed in this home for 8 days at the end of August. It is an extremely well stocked house that is very homey, and reminded us of visiting an aunt or grandmother's home. Marian has done a fabulous job making sure that anything that could be needed can, infact, be found with just a bit of searching. She has done a very good job of labeling everything and placing instructions/directions all through out the home. We never had to wonder about anything, it was all layed out somewhere! I do have three small children, 8 months, 3 and 5 years, and there were some things I wish I'd have known before visiting this home. The first is that the two bedrooms are on opposite ends of the home and it was difficult and worrisome for me trying to hear them at night. Bring a baby monitor! Also, only the bedrooms are air conditioned. It was a very good thing there were no neighbors around because it was too hot to wear much of anything unless we were sleeping! The bugs were awful! I brought both natural bug sprays and OFF!, neither of which particularly worked, so enjoying the hammock was difficult. The bugs also get in the house through cracks between the screens and the doors, so we got bit even in the house and when we were sleeping. The house is situated on a truly beautiful lot with much to look at. All the flowers, trees and plants were amazing! The beach was right out the back door and our kids loved playing and shelling there. My husband enjoyed snorkeling, and even I took a stab at it! The island itself is amazingly beautiful. However, groceries are incredibly expensive (2-4 times the cost in the US), and we were hard pressed to find anywhere to shop for souveniers. We did enjoy searching out the eleusive beaches (we found a favorite on the Atlantic side), and traveling to Harbour Island (take your suits, the beaches there are amazing!), and we enjoyed eating at Papa George's Pizza south of Governor's Harbor in maybe Palmetto Point? George was so friendly and told us many stories about Eleuthera and its past. We also found a nice place to find ice cream novelties in Gregory Town, where the few women working were very friendly and chated with our family for a long time. Some Bahamians are friendly, some aren't. Overall, we had a fun, very relaxed time on our vacation. Obviously, it would have been much more relaxing without the three little ones! But what are family vacations for, if not for spending time with your FAMILY?
My husband and I stayed here for 7 days. This home was wonderful! The water was clearer then the pictures show it to be,it was as warm as a bathtub. The home was clean and comfortable. The grounds were beautiful with all the gardens and that beach.... We saw a few sharks but I guess that is part of swimming in the ocean. There were a lot of shells to collect on the beach. The fishing didn't turn out to be as good as we expected we now know that a boat would be needed to catch anything big.
