The Meadow Cottage is a charming one level, three bedroom cottage tucked away on a quiet two acre meadow in Abingdon’s historic district. The cottage, built in the 1930's, has been lovingly restored and modern conveniences added with only our guests' comforts in mind!
Decorated in English cottage style, the cottage boasts hardwood floors, bead board ceilings, hand-painted walls and furniture as well as attractive furnishings and local artwork. This tranquil hide-away has three bedrooms: a large queen master and two double bedrooms. There is a full bath and laundry area.
A cozy living room and fully equipped country kitchen are centrally located between the bedrooms areas. Two nice porches offer quiet spots to visit, settle with a good book or simply enjoy the meadow life.
The beautiful back yard offers privacy for outdoor dining and relaxing. Complete with a patio pavilion and fireput area makes this a perfect place to enjoy a night under the stars with friends or family or nap in the hammock. Our newly renovated canning shed is a perfect addition to the meadow. We call it our room with a view. Curl up with a book or just enjoy a quiet moment. Stroll the meadow and if you are lucky you will spot a deer or enjoy watching the golden hawks soar above.
The Cottage is a short bike ride or walk to dining and shopping areas, a local brewery as well as Barter Theatre and The Virginia Creeper Trail. The trailhead of the Virginia Creeper Trail is about an 8 minute bike ride.
Whether you want a romantic getaway, a weekend with friends on the Creeper Trail or a week-long family vacation, The Meadow Cottage offers a perfect setting with all the conveniences of home.
Complimentary pastries, juices and coffees/teas are provided on arrival morning. Enjoy complimentary passes to the Coomes Recreation Center.

Really nice cottage. A lovely setting
We loved our stay in Abingdon. The cottage was very clean, the owners follow Covid-19 procedures. They even left masks and hand sanitizer in the cottage in case we needed some . The cottage has plenty of room for the 4 of us (parents + 2 teens), and a large back yard where we saw the usual Red Robins, cardinals and squirrels, but also groundhogs (they call home under the garage) and a deer family. The owners care about their cottage. It is well maintained and cute. We had everything we need. They were great host, answering any questions and providing advice on what to do and where to eat. When we arrived, coffee, tea and a home-made cinnamon bread were waiting for us. During the week, upon returning from a hike, we found home-made Easter Danish cookies by the door. It is very well located and we could easily explore the region: we biked the Creeper Trail, hiked/visited Backbone rock and waterfall, Grayson Highlands SP, Natural Tunnel SP, High Knob Observation Tower and the Channels.
Charming cottage for our small gathering.
Wonderful 2 acres of green space with a charming cottage in the middle of the city. You can walk to downtown , (The Tavern) about 5 blocks. Our bike shop (Rode the VA Creeper Trail) was 5 minutes away by car. Rooms are spacious and beds very comfortable and clean. Used fire pit each night. There are woodchucks, rabbits, deer, squirrels all just frolicking around in the yard. Great base to see other spots of Southwest Virginia. Overall, very nice place to stay.
We stayed at this property while attending the Nascar races in Bristol. It had everything you need for a comfortable stay. The cottage was very clean and very well stocked. The property manager was easily accessible and very helpful. The cottage is very spacious and cozy. The property is quiet, relaxing and beautiful. Because it is set back in down a lane way, arriving at night can be intimidating because of the vast darkness, but once you awake in the morning you will be delighted. The property manager had the lights on for us in expectation of our late arrival for witch we were greatful. This property is highly recommended. The country cottage décor is a site to see.
We really enjoyed staying at the Meadow Cottage. It had everything we needed to cook, spread out a little and just sit and enjoy. The porches are great, the house is private and the yard is filled with sweet wildlife. We easily walked to the lovely historic downtown. I love Abingdon and this place. It was my parents, my son and I all staying and we had so much room. If we had picked up two hotel rooms in town, we would have spent at least as much money and would not have been able to gather in our downtime out on the porch or in the den they way we were able to here. Thanks for the wonderful stay!
The property is wonderful and the owners even more so! They went out of their way to make the visit a complete success!
It was a delightful cottage. The hosts were very nice and attentive, leaving us juice and a delicious bread for our first morning. The meadow is lovely. There was a newly born fawn, as well as tons of rabbits. The firefires were amazing. Would definitely recommend it to others.
The house is very close to town with a very large and private yard. It was perfect for a short vacation.
My two daughters (11 and 13) stayed at Meadow Cottage for a week and had a wonderful time. The cottage is charming and so peaceful (I slept better than I have for years), and the garden/yard is beautiful. There are several areas to sit and read a book outside, have morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening - the porches on the front and back of the house as well as a fire pit and a table and chairs in the garden. Jim and Jennifer are the kindest people and we loved getting to know them - the pastries and coffee/tea/juices left for our arrival made us feel instantly welcome. We stayed during the Abingdon Arts festival and spent a couple of days wandering around there, we also (upon Jennifer's suggestion) biked the 18 mile Virginia Creeper trail which was so much fun! It's the easiest bike ride we have ever been on - a shuttle drives you to the top of the mountain and the entire ride is downhill with multiple places to stop and climb rocks or put your feet in the water. We also kayaked which the girls loved and the biggest hit was seeing Mamma Mia at the Barter theater. We plan on returning - Abingdon is a lovely little town and we will absolutely stay at one of Jennifer and Jim's properties again. They become like friends!
After many years of talking about doing the Virginia Creeper Trail, we finally made it down from Norther VA. We wanted a cottage so that we could come and go as we pleased. What a great getaway and Jim and Jennifer were so welcoming and friendly. We usually do B&Bs...we for sure will be back to Meadow Cottage. It was pristine and so cheerful and the quiet we enjoyed was unbelievable...made coming back up to Beltway City even more sad. We arrived to find a loaf of Jennifer's apple bread, juice and 1/2 and 1/2 for our coffee in the AM and on the last evening, Jennifer dropped by with cookies.....loved this place!!
Absolutely had a wonderful time in Abingdon where we stayed at the delightful Meafow Cottage for 4 nights. We took our daughter and her two children to ride The Creeper Trail and ended up requesting an extra night. There is so much to do and see..Barter Theatre, Heartwood Artisan Center, Artist Depot, Farmers Market...we walked our legs off...but the best part was returning to our little cottage to unwind and enjoy the quiet. The cottage is totally private....seems like a country setting in the middle of town. We had deer that visited each night and enjoyed watching the baby rabbits chase each other. The cottage is equipped with everything we needed, right down to board games and cards. The owners gave us a guest pass to the Coomes Center for swimming...but we did not have time to do anything but use the great playground. The owners also had plenty of juice, coffees and teas for us to enjoy and the best apple cinnamon bread. We couldn't have asked for a better spot for our family trip. When we asked the kids what they liked best, they were unanimous pizza by the firepit! Success!
What a treat to find such a quaint cottage to call our home base for a recent get-away extended weekend. We started each day with our coffee and pastries before exploring the local attractions. We would end each day relaxing in the cozy Living Room. Even though it was early February, and chilly, we were comfortable sitting in the sunshine on the front porch mid day as we planned our evening outings. The location feels private and secluded, but is so convenient to town. There is so much to do and see in this area, and excellent dining options. The owners provided special touches to make our stay pleasant, and were nearby if we needed anything, but respected our privacy so that we truly felt at home and relaxed.
My wife and I were going through an adoption looking for something other then a hotel and close to the hospital having a baby in tow. The experience staying at the cottage was a beam of light from heaven guiding us on this path. We both have nothing but excellent things to say. Bringing our new born back to the cottage was the perfect atmosphere. A full Kitchen to cook meals instead of dining out and a place to do the extra laundry. From the beginning, we felt right at home. Because of the adoption, we had to spend 2 weeks in VA. During the planning stage, we decided on the second week to move closer to PA. It was truly heartbreaking after our time was up that we had to leave, wishing we could've stayed the whole 2 weeks. Crystal and I would like to sincerely thank the home owners Jennifer & Jim for the personal warmth we both felt, going above and beyond to help with our needs. We plan to return in the future to show off our little girl and further enjoy all the quant charming aspects of the cottage. Thank You so much!
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay at the cottage and will definitely try to return some day and rent the same cottage hopefully for a bit longer next time. It was a perfect, peaceful, weekend getaway for our family of 4, with 2 adult children who still like hanging out with their parents on occasion, but prefer their own bedrooms. We ate in for breakfast (and enjoyed the delicious scones, coffee and tea provided by the owner) both days, did the Virginia Creeper Trail one day, and played Canasta at the rustic kitchen table into the night. The TV went unused. The house has a very warm, cozy, homespun feel, very clean and well furnished (and well managed), with creative and tasteful renovations and decorating. I got lots of great ideas for my own renovation projects. I also commented several times to my family that if we had a cottage in the mountains, I'd want something just like this. Tucked in the back of a quiet neighborhood, private, quiet, peaceful, and with lots of wildlife around. So glad we chose this over a hotel or rustic cabin. Just what the doctor ordered for a weekend family getaway. So glad we found this rental (and hope these reviews don't make it so popular that we can't book it next time!).
We will definitely stay at the Meadow Cottage again when we return to Abingdon! Clean, comfortable and right in the middle of everybody and everything we were in Abingdon to see and do. Lovely setting and porches allowed for peaceful consumption of coffee and sweet rolls in the morning, while watching bunnies and birds, and wine and cheese in the evening with the fireflies. Most relaxed we've been in years. Made for a perfect visit to see dear old friends and memorable places.
We stayed here and loved it! There are charming touches everywhere you look -- and the basics are luxurious too! We went for the attractions of Abingdon (which are within walking distance) but the privacy of the cottage made it hard to leave -- it was too easy just to stay and pretend all those glorious flowers and lovely nature were ours! It would be a perfect place to write. And we loved the sense that we were on our own but still so well taken care of!
Four friends just returned from a long weekend in Abingdon Virginia. The highlight of our stay was the adorable Meadow Cottage that we chose from VRBO vacation listings. We had been to Abingdon many times before for girl getaways but this was the first time that we had chosen a rental property in town. This was the best of both worlds...close to everything and yet the setting in a big meadow made us feel we were out the country. Deer ran through at dusk as we enjoyed the firepit one night...and we even saw a fox. We could walk to town and did so one night when we had a fabulous dinner at The Tavern. We saw two plays at Barter Theatre and enjoyed time tasting all the olive oils at the Abingdon Olive Oil Company on Main Street. Although, we did not bike the Creeper on this trip, we did hike out about 3 miles from the Abingdon end and had a picnic. After our busy days, it was wonderful to relax and sit by the fire pit with a glass of wine and a take-out dessert from Anthony's Desserts.(the best cheesecake I have ever had). The cottage was precious and the owners have furnished it beautifully with every thing a guest would need for a relaxing and pleasant stay. Delicious homemade cinnamon rolls awaited us for our first morning along with juices. The coffee and tea selection that is there for all guests made us feel like we were in a Starbuck's! The owners also left us a printed list of everything that was going on for the dates we were there. It was a perfect place for four friends to stay and reunite. We are already talking about our next trip to the Meadow Cottage.
This was our family's second stay at The Meadow Cottage. We enjoyed our first stay so much, we didn't even look for other accommodations in the Abingdon area! Once again, we arrived at a lovely, and very clean cottage nestled back in a meadow-like setting. Awaiting us upon arrival was some of the best pumpkin bread we had ever tasted - delicious! We spent the weekend with our family and celebrated my sister's birthday. A great time had by all! We will absolutely stay at The Meadow Cottage when we return to Abingdon in the future. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
