Very cute place and our host Jack was great!!!
We really enjoyed our stay and Jack was very good to us! Fun town!
Cottage had daybed which was convenient for my friend and I. Small kitchen but had every appliance that was needed. Beautiful backyard. Dogs were very friendly and Jack was very nice to let us pick up our luggage later in the day before our flight.
Clean, well equipped, charming neighborhood. Walked to Metro daily. Jack was perfect host.
My stay at the cottage was perfect! Jack is super prompt with n responding to any questions or needs. The cottage was great for me and the location was super convenient. I loved being in a quiet, beautiful neighborhood.
Our stay at "The Cottage" was absolutely wonderful. It is close to the metro, good neighborhood, and quiet. Jack was great!!
This was a great location for the 4 of us who wanted to see Washington DC. Very safe and attractive neighborhood, Metro and old town Alexandria in walking distance, free parking on the street, laundry access if we needed it, our kind host to answer any questions.
First of all, the owner, Jack, is absolutely amazing....we had a redeye flight and we were greeted with muffins and juice after a long flight. He is there for you and can answer all questions. Additionally, he has two dogs who give us dog lovers lots of love! The cottage is clean and cozy....the kitchen has EVERYTHING you need for cooking. Finally, the backyard is peaceful and calm with the white lights and candles....perfect for sipping wine after a day in the city. We were lucky enough to have snow during our stay so we really enjoyed sitting outside and watching the snow/rain....we are from Southern California so we love anything other than sun! Also, the neighborhood is GORGEOUS....we took several walks just looking at the beautiful homes. You will not go wrong when you book this perfect cottage!! We LOVED it!!!!
Our host, Jack, was a great guy. We loved his dogs. The neighborhood was quiet. I would suggest somewhat that if you stay that you make certain that you are not parallel-parking challenged. Since the kitchen is downstairs make certain that stairs will not be an issue. Jack was indispensable in the raising of the bed. J & L
The location was in a great neighborhood within a mile of historic downtown - easily walked or reached via Uber. Once downtown the King St. trolley offered free transportation in old downtown. Jack was very responsive to our questions and needs. He went the extra mile to make sure our stay was comfortable, including home baked biscotti upon our arrival. The cottage was small but met our needs. You do need to be able navigate some steep, narrow stairs leading to the kitchen area. Day bed that folds out to be a queen is a little awkward but comfortable. We definitely slept well. Tip for people going into Wash. DC - use the water taxi - nice relaxing way to get into the city and lets you off at the Wharf, less than a mile from the National Mall. You may want to consider the walking tour through the visitors center in Alexandria lots of good information. We were able to explore both Alexandria and Wash. DC without a car, using Amtrack to get there, Uber to get to the cottage and downtown, the trolley on King St, the water taxi to Wash DC and a tour bus in DC (Big Bus was good but would recommend staying on the bus for the entire tour first then getting off to see something - long wait between buses). Also no grocery stores within walking distance but Uber worked well there.
great for 2 people. Jack is great.
The cottage was a wonderful 10 day vacation choice for my husband and myself. There was everything we needed available to us, and all we needed to do was ask if we needed something. The neighborhood was upscale and quiet. We took advantage of the patio and grill every evening to make dinner. The cottage is cozy and perfect for a couple doing a commuting vacation to DC. Our host, Jack, was pleasant and available to answer questions about the area, bus stops, restaurants etc. Overall, if we ever decide to visit the area again we will definitely book The Cottage!
We were looking for a place in a nice neighborhood and near the metro. This worked perfectly. It was close quarters for my husband and me and our two college kids, but it worked well since we really just needed a place to sleep. It had all that we needed and Jack was very responsive. We would have used the patio, but it rained. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the Cottage was very affordable. Thanks, Jack!
What an amazing wonderful place. I got in late and the key was exactly where Jack said it would be. It usually takes me two or three days to get used to a new bed when I travel but I slept great from the first evening I arrived until the day I departed. One day when we came home Jack had a plate of welcoming homemade brownies waiting for us. They were delicious and a great treat, thank you Jack. The refrigerator was stocked with English muffins, yogurt and orange juice and there was coffee! What a treat to sit out back in the morning and have a slow relaxing start to the day! Jack ensured we had everything we needed and were comfortable. Will stay again next trip to DC! Thank you Jack!
Very nice private patio for birdwatching. Best VRBO experience we have had. Kitchen well equipped except for some very old Teflon pans that should not be used, a couple of GLASS saucepans saved the day.
We had a great stay at Jack's Cottage, everything was nice and clean and all of the supplies we needed were there. We were running around most of the time, but talked with Jack several times, he is a great host. He gave us great nearby restaurant recommendations and made sure we enjoyed our time in DC!
The first thing I have to say to prospective renters is be sure you read the description of the residence. It it spot on. We arrived on Saturday and met Jack as he was washing his car. We unpacked the car and explored the Cottage. Again, I will say the description is spot on. Afterwards we explored the area and took a walk to the train station and bought our tickets for the week. The walk, at a casual pace is 15-18 minutes from the Cottage. Just a note, after a lot of walking in D.C. the walk back will take a little longer, The last portion of the walk back to the Cottage is slightly uphill. Jack was available for any questions we had. And one evening after our return from sightseeing, Jack brought over some fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. I have two recommendations, but these are not any way to be taken as a negative comment. 1. Include a journal in the Cottage. I have seen this in other places. It is fun to see where people are from and what they have to say about the area. Sometimes, good recommendations are left there for places to visit or places to eat. 2. Replace the daybed with a pull-out sofa. Not that the day bed was not comfortable, I feel that the sofa would save some space in the room. If we decide to come back to D.C., we would not hesitate to stay there again.
The bed is great. Jack supplies coffee, toiletries and lots of towels. The Direct TV works great. It’s in a lovely neighborhood. The only downside is the apartment is cramped when the bed is opened, and the stairs down to the kitchen are quite steep and narrow. However the kitchen is very well stocked - you can really cook there! There is a lovely patio with a gas grill looking a a pretty yard. Next time it will be warmer and we will enjoy that space. The apartment is almost a mile from the metro, and shops and restaurants also a bit of a hike. We Ubered back and forth so it wasn’t a problem. We would be happy to book again.
Such a pristine property! Near Old Town which is worth a visit.
We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was very cozy and met all of our needs. The kitchen was well stocked. We walked each day to the metro station and rode into DC. Jack was a great host. We had all we needed for a relaxing vacation. The kids especially enjoyed the fresh baked cookies. We would definitely stay at the cottage again.
You can't get better service and great accomodations like this from a hotel. Our grandson enlisted in the army, so my husband planned this trip with him to DC so he could experience the incredible history of our great country first hand. I'm so happy we found the cottage for their stay for so many reasons, the cottage & the host, Jack, did not disappoint! Incredible experience, from the goodies in kitchen upon arrival, surprise dessert left one of the nights, clean comfortable place, great location, and Jack always checking in to make sure everything was good. He was extremely quick to respond EVERY TIME, from the booking to the departure. I can tell you as a person who spent 34 years in hotel management, this was one of the best travel experiences we have had. THANK YOU Jack! We will definitely be with you again if we return to visit! : )
Jack and Alan are great hosts that were very welcoming and generous throughout the entire stay. The cottage is very nice and cozy and definitely very will furnished and kept. Convenient location with easy access to everything. Great stay
Accessible to train to D.C. By walking. Lots great places close by. Kitchen well furnished.
The location was great. Jack was very accommodating and nice. But this is not a 1 bedroom. You walk into the door and it is a small room with a day bed with a trundle pullout and a dresser and a tv. Bathroom was right off of it and was nice and clean. Kitchen was down a very narrow staircase and was also very updated. Beautiful garden area to enjoy your morning coffee. BUT we stay at Home Aways because we don't like how there are just beds to sit on at the end of the day to kick back when staying at hotels. I also always stay away from any studio listings normally. My hubby is a big guy and the day bed was not wide enough for him. He snores loudly and there was no main room for me to escape to as this was not a 1 bedroom. This place would be great for 1 person or a small couple.
Very small. Undity. Not so good.
The place is lovely in general. Especially the kitchen which is very new, spacious and well equipped. The upper level is tight on space and the stairs are a bit steep, but I was expecting that from the description and is fine for the price. What I would warn people about is the beds... the description and pictures are not clear. The 'king size trundle' is really 2 twin mattresses put together. And the 'bed #2. Sleeps 2 additional guests, very comfortably' is very deceiving since it's an inflatable air mattress on the kitchen floor. For 2 people the 2 twins are comfortable enough but I wouldn't stay with more than 2. Otherwise, very nice, wifi worked well.
Overall, our stay at Jack's cottage was fine. Jack was a superb host. He accommodated our early check in, which was an important issue for us because we were arriving at noon and we had wanted to rest up before heading out to the event that we were in town for that evening. The cottage had everything we needed for our short two-day stay. It was a half hour walk to the center of Old Town, and is centrally located to all the tourist sights. Parking on the street is generally not a problem. Logistically, the Cottage is perhaps more suited for a single person or young couple. It is more of a studio apartment similar to what you might find in New York City. As older adults, we found it a bit cramped in the main living/sleeping area particularly when the beds were pulled out. I'm skinny but my heavyset husband struggled to get around. The beds were also a bit quirky because they are actually one daybed and a single twin bed that you push together. It was comfortable enough but for older folks like us, it was a bit hard to get used to sleeping in a twin bed. I loved the setup of having the kitchen and eating area downstairs. It had everything we needed. And the balcony outside was lovely to sit in the evening and enjoy a glass of wine. But as I've mentioned, because we're in our 60s, the small steep stairway was hard on my knees and you really need to hold on to make sure you don't trip and fall. Other than that, if you can look past sleeping on a twin bed and navigating the steep staircase, this would be the perfect spot for you. This is not a negative on the host because he was fantastic! Had I been younger (or single), I would stay here over and over again.
The cottage is in a wonderful, safe neighborhood. It is charming, cozy, well equipped, clean, has a beautiful quiet outdoor space and the hosts (and host dogs) are just fabulous! Perfect place to stay just outside of the hustle and bustle of the city, but just a short drive from everything you need.
We just completed an 11-day stay at the Cottage. This was our second time staying there and we will definitely be back. The Cottage is uniquely located in a very quiet neighborhood on a one-way street that was never short of available parking, day or night. The neighborhood offers a shaded wooded walkway along a stream that remained cool even on hot days. Jack has the place set up perfectly for those looking for an oasis in this highly metropolitan area. Jack was the perfect host, going out of his way to make sure our visit was enjoyable. Any questions we had for him were answered promptly. The kitchen was functional and very well stocked, there were plenty of linens and a comfortable bed. All in all, a great place to stay.
The cottage was very cozy and comfortable. I usually pack everything but the kitchen sink and I found that I did not need to do so. Everything we needed was there and a lot of thought had been put into using the space well. We loved having the BBQ grill and the yard. The location was beautiful and extremely safe. Thanks Jack for a wonderful stay.
My sister and I visited the Alexandria area for a girls trip. We choose the cottage because of its location, price and set up. Jack is an exceptional host. Friendly and easy to work with. He readily answer questions and went the extra mile to help us. The cottage is an excellent place to visit for a vacation. At the cottage you will find many extra's.
The cottage was a great place to stay for our family vacation. The cottage is in a great neighborhood and is within walking distance of two metro stations. When we first arrived to the cottage there were groceries in the refrigerator, saving us a trip to the store on that first day. Jack then surprised us with homemade cookies a couple of days into our stay, which were so yummy!! We definitely recommend the cottage and will stay there again if we are in the area (and it's available).
The cottage was convient, clean, and we could not have felt more welcome.
The cottage was very quaint in a quiet, safe neighborhood with adequate parking space. The place was clean and had everything necessary to make our stay comfortable. Jack made sure to check in with us prior to our visit to finalize arrangements and texted us when we were there to make sure we knew how to get ahold of him should we need anything. Alexandria has much to offer in shopping, dining, and just enjoying a walk downtown. We highly recommend this cottage in a fun city!
We stayed at this cottage for four weeks. The location was within 15 minutes of where ever we wanted to go. Very quite, nice neighborhood. Jack was an excellent host. When we needed supplies replaced, he was right there. Jack's dog, Nyla, was a joy. When we were on the patio, she joined us. Jack gave us cupcakes, made brownies and on Mother's Day, he gave me roses from the garden and home baked cookies! We had plenty of hot water and the heater and air conditioning served us well. The full kitchen was adequately stocked for preparing whatever we needed to. The bed was so comfortable. We got a good nights sleep every night. If we are ever back in the area, we will DEFINITELY stay here again.
The Cottage is cozy (bedroom and bathroom upstairs, kitchen and eating area downstairs) and in a nice neighborhood, very convenient to Old Town, Del Ray and Metro stations. Jack is very friendly and responsive; he immediately resolved a couple of issues that arose during our 2 1/2 week stay and checked back to be sure that we were satisfied. Anyone with mobility issues should be aware that the stairs are narrow and steep (this is an older house) and make a 90 degree turn at the bottom. Overall this is a very nice value and would have been nicer had the weather allowed us to use the patio area outside.
My 9 year old granddaughter and I were planning a trip this past summer for her to attend a sewing camp in Alexandria. As it would just be her and I, I wanted to be in a safe and beautiful neighborhood. We fell in love with the picture of The Cottage online. Jack was so very helpful and kind with answering our questions concerning travel and our needs as two 'girls' on our own. We were very pleased and happy with our choice. When we arrived there were wonderful homemade cookies waiting for us and Jack gave us driving directions to the grocery store. The home is located within a short driving distance wherever we wanted to go. The kitchen was so well appointed that we ate breakfast everyday there and even a few dinners. The private patio was so serene in the evenings. A true place to relax. There was so much that we did not have time to see and do in our weeks stay that we vowed to return. Of course we will be staying at The Cottage.
My husband and I stayed at the cottage while we were in town for the Ohio State/Maryland game. I had stayed there in September with friends and found that it would be perfect to stay there for the game since it is so close to Metro stops (King St. or Huntington). Jack is very accommodating and a very nice person. He was available for questions and he wanted to make sure all was well with our stay. The cottage is in a nice neighborhood, where it is easy to just go for a walk or to walk down to the King St. Metro stop. There is a patio area with a grill (we didn't get to use it). It was nice to sit out there and read while the birds were all around. There are grocery stores nearby (the cottage has a nice kitchen with pots, pans, dishes, etc.) and a choice of many restaurants. We hope to visit again in the future.
My husband and I recently stayed at the Cottage while visiting our daughter who lives in a small apartment in Alexandria. We found the Cottage to be perfect for our needs. We loved being in a residential area. We even walked around there just to explore the neighborhood. Jack was an excellent host. He was available to answer our questions and provide for our needs. There was food such as English muffins, orange juice, yogurt, etc. provided when we arrived. There was coffee, creamer, sugar, in the kitchen. Jack left umbrellas outside the front door since it was rainy during our stay. I feel that the Cottage is truly a good value in that expensive area. We plan to stay there again in the future, possibly for a longer visit. Thanks, Jack!
Jack's cottage was a great choice for a Washington sightseeing trip. Convenient walking access to the Metro. We routinely walked back "home" after 10 pm and always felt safe. Really nice Alexandria neighborhood with on-street parking. The cottage was a great alternative to a hotel. Jack is such a nice host. Would enjoy staying there again!
This place was a big disappointment. As a couple, we had to assemble the day bed into the king size bed, which then filled the room so we could hardly move around it. There were no end tables and lamps one expects next to a bed. There wasn't even a closet for hanging clothes, just a metal shelf and bar next to the day bed. the main room had a chest of drawers, but the top was cluttered with stuff so there was no place to put your things. Pillows filled the drawers. The kitchen is down a steep narrow flight of stairs, watch that you don't bump your head going down. The laundry is in another building, you have to go outside to get to it. The internet connection is very weak, we logged in but frequently lost connection. Jack may be nice, but this rental is not.
I took this place in the winter and spring of 2016 when I got a new job in the Alexandria area and needed temporary digs in the midweek every other week until I could find something more permanent. The arrangement Jack and I came up with worked out well: I would fill midweek calendar dates in his "slow" midwinter season in return for a rate that beat most local hotels (which have higher rates in midweek because of high business travel demand). This was for a sizable, quiet apartment with many amenities in a desirable, safe neighborhood, not simply a room. (If you're familiar with the New York suburbs, the neighborhood will recall Montclair or Glen Ridge, N.J.) Jack was very accommodating for my occasional needs, like help figuring out the cable TV remotes. I remember one time I called early in day (not for me, but for most people) and woke Jack out of bed; he was cheerful and accommodating as ever, if a bit bleary. I'd highly recommend this place for two people who will spend most of the waking day out and about seeing the sights; and it's probably best for people who don't have difficulty with stairs, since the flight between the kitchen area and sleeping area is rather steep, although the handrail is sturdy. Since it was winter, I never used the backyard patio but I can imagine that being a relaxing place for a summer drink or meal. Enjoy!
The owner, Jack, was so accommodating and willing to ensure our stay was pleasant. There is no longer a convenient grocery store and since we had no car, Jack took me the first evening to the Giant store (abut 2 miles distant) for necessities for breakfast, etc. The cottage is great for one, well suited for 2 but cramped for 3 or more. It is 2 levels so guests must be able to negotiate some steep steps. Guests either need a car or must be able and willing to walk. Old Town and the 2 metro stops are almost 1 mile. The neighborhood is quiet and safe but some sidewalks are uneven and may be problematic for walkers. Alexandria is a wonderfully historic place to visit. Don't miss the Washington Masonic Temple which is right by the King Street metro stop. We were so glad we took the time to visit it and it is not just for masons but has much history about Washington and fellow masons. The cottage is highly recommended for a single or a couple, particularly if they are traveling by car. Jack is a thoughtful and amiable host. We very much enjoyed our 2 week stay.
Enjoyed our stay here. Location is very safe feeling. Nice neighborhood. Enjoyed our visit. We really didn't have nice weather (two days of cold damp rain), but still enjoyed our visit. Close to metro, King St. would recommend the cottage and Jack's great care.
We are a family of four (4) ... two children and we were very reluctant to stay somewhere other than an Hotel. Did we ever LUCK OUT! Jack's Cottage is so clean; comfortable; and inviting. My wife and I slept upstairs, while our two boys slept downstairs. We all LOVED it. The outside Patio and garden is just beautiful. At night, we grilled on the Gas Grill, while soft lights lit the patio area. NO MOSQUITOS!!!! We were in awe. Hats off to Jack for baking Chocolate Chip Cookies for our children. Again, VERY COMFORTABLE/CLEAN/WELCOMING accommodations. Thank you, Jack.
Three words is all it takes to describe this little piece of perfection: cozy, comfortable and hospitable! The 2-level cottage provides all the comforts you need in a compact space. We stayed here with 3 people just fine. Enough space, and privacy. Greatest asset is the entrance to the garden: a private area outside is an oasis of rest. Downtown Alexandria is just minutes away by car, downtown Washington just 20 minutes. And last but not least: Jack’s hospitality! He stocked the bathroom and kitchen and when we asked for an extra blanket it came with a box of candy! So sweet!
My fiance stayed at The Cottage for the last week in October 2015. We can't say enough about how perfect this place was and how accommodating Jack is. My dad decided to stay with us at the last minute, and Jack was so flexible and made us feel totally welcome. The Cottage is adorable, and the kitchen is perfect for what we needed. The neighborhood is quaint, safe and it was a quick 15 minute walk to the Metro. The cute backyard was beautiful, and we would have loved to have spent more time out there but the sightseeing wore us out each day! We'd love to go back next year and would highly recommend The Cottage to anyone wanting to travel to the area. Thank you Jack for an amazing week in a beautiful place!
My husband, 8 year old son and I loved our stay at the Cottage. After a few days in the Dupont Circle we were ready for a relaxing change. And the cottage did the trick. The neighborhood is adorable and safe. The cottage is impeccably clean. The kitchen has everything you need to cook a 5 course dinner. And there were 2 televisions, which was nice to give my son a break in his own space downstairs. The bed upstairs is super comfy and my son said the same for the high quality air mattress on the bottom floor. The first thing we did when we arrived was a load of laundry and sit on the beautiful patio with a glass of wine, definitely a luxury. While you will be in walking distance from the metro and the trolley for King Street we were happy we rented a car for this half of our trip. It appeared to be doable, but we were done. After spending days walking around DC we were ready for a break. Alexandria is lovely and we easily filled up a few days. The history is fascinating and great for children. Ghost tours, George Washingtons house, historic churches and cemeteries, apothecary museum, beautiful waterfront, art galleries in the the Torpedo Factory and restaurants galore. Please take note, as Jack mentions the cottage is small. However it was the perfect size for my family of 3.
Me and my wife enjoyed our stay at The Cottage. It is better than staying in a hotel and the cost didn’t break the bank. The place is very clean, cozy, and most of all very comfortable. It was just the right size for the two of us. The backyard is not only beautiful but also perfect for late night moon gazing. The location is perfect for leisure walks to King Street for restaurant exploring, sightseeing and window shopping. The neighborhood is very inviting and the neighbors are very friendly. The owner Jack was the icing on the cake. His personality and hospitality etched in not only my mind but more importantly my wife’s mind we will definitely be returning to what we deem, our home away from home. Thanks again Jack for an amazing time at The Cottage. We are still talking about how much we loved our Cottage experience.
We just got home from the Cottage and are ready to go back!!! Jack's Cottage was exactly what we needed! We have two children, 5 and 7, so it was helpful having both a full kitchen AND laundry during our week's stay in VA. Walking distance to King Street station, fin things to do in Old Town, we couldn't have been more pleased! And, Jack is great, the absolute best! What a lovely cottage and a lovely person!!! And, the cookies he baked us were the BEST!!! We will be back!
We selected the Cottage because we wanted to be near Old Town, Alexandria. The price was exceptional compared to local hotels. We also wanted the ability to make some of our own meals rather than eat out all the time. In terms of being a great value for the price, the Cottage is hard to beat. The description of the Cottage is very accurate and you should set your expectations accordingly. The Cottage is not luxurious, but it is clean, quiet, and has everything you need to be comfortable. It is fine for two people. The upstairs bedroom has enough space when the daybed is closed. The daybed is trundle style; once you pull it out to full king-size, it does take up most of the room, so just be prepared for that. Still, the bed itself is very comfortable. The adjoining bathroom is small but adequate, with a great shower and a window overlooking a nice yard. A winding staircase leads down to a fully equipped kitchen and a small table for two. The downstairs also offers access to the backyard. The property is well maintained. You have your own separate entrance and a parking space right outside the door, which is a real plus. Located in a lovely, quiet residential area, the Cottage is an enjoyable 10-minute walk through a nice neighborhood to reach King Street. We did it several times in the evenings and felt perfectly safe. You will be at the end of King Street, right near the Metro stop, which is the best way to get around DC. There is also a Metro transportation office next door to the Embassy Suites hotel across the street from the station. Here you can get day passes for the Metro, a good idea if you plan to make multiple stops around town. One of the best services offered by Alexandria is the free trolley that runs along King Street all the way to the waterfront. Hop on and off anytime until about 10 PM. It will save you a lot of walking. Needless to say, the shops and restaurants along King Street and close by are wonderful, and it is so much nicer to stay in this quaint village-like area rather than in downtown DC or other nearby cities. Here's a tip: If you're a Crate and Barrel fan, there is a Crate and Barrel outlet store not far from the King Street Metro. Jack is a gracious host. He leaves goodies for you in the refrigerator and provides lots of information about local sights, restaurants, etc. There are plenty of TV channels, as well as DVDs and books. The Cottage is a great cost-effective alternative to an expensive hotel room.
My wife, daughter and I stayed at the Cottage. We wanted a nice getaway for the weekend to see the sights of DC and experience Old Town Alexandria. We had never tried staying at places other than a hotel. LUCKY US to have found 'The Cottage'. The Cottage offers more than a hotel, along with comfort and convenience. We were sold on the kitchen...a full kitchen and a beautiful walk-out patio. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE COTTAGE! We will be back. Thanks, Jack
We stayed here for a week for business. It was perfect. Location is excellent, you can walk to everything. Short walk to the metro and quickly into DC. The neighborhood is wonderful. Tons of parking and the neighbors were all very friendly. Jack and NYLA are the best. Great host. The cottage is so charming. We left the trundle bed set up in a king bed position and we had enough room to move around the upper level. The lower level has a great kitchen. I cooked a lot. The outdoor area is amazing. The garden was so peaceful. The grill was great we used that often as well. We are already planning our next trip. Can't wait to return. Thank you Jack and NYLA we had the best work/vacation possible.
My wife and I had the BEST stay ever at the Cottage. The Cottage is so CLEAN, COMFORTABLE and CONVENIENT to everything. It was nice to park in front of the Cottage and walk to the Metro and Old Town. If you haven't tied the Cottage, we HIGHLY recommend it!!! No second thoughts, whatsoever!
My wife and fiance loved the warmth and coziness of the Cottage. The neighborhood is definitely upper-class and well-maintained. This is a wonderful 'ROMANTIC' place for two. The convenience of stores; metro and having mostly everything very close is a BIG PLUS! The owner takes great 'care' in maintaining the Cottage (inside and out). CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN! The downstairs kitchen and outside beautiful patio, is a perfect way to begin your day with coffee and a meal before heading out to DC for sightseeing. We HIGHLY recommend the Cottage and we will return!
Dear Jack: I am happy to write a review of your Cottage, based on our recent stay with you. The location of the property, to our surprise, is in an upper middle-class neighborhood—a safe and quiet area of Alexandria, Virginia. Because the Cottage is a short walk to the Metro Rail System and the local restaurants in Old Town, we saved a bundle on transportation and parking. Also, your rates are quite reasonable for the expensive Washington, DC housing market. We found the facility very clean and immediately appreciated the manner in which you utilized the space. The king-size sofa bed allowed us to sit or lounge while watching television or the many movies you provided, and we especially looked forward to the large bed with memory foam after a long day of site seeing . The décor and the actual layout remind us of a cottage we rented while visiting the west end of London. However, the prices in England are significantly higher. The Wi-Fi allowed us to use all of our electronics simultaneously while in the Cottage or outside. Thank you for making the gas grill available for our use. It was fun cooking outside with guests and marveling at the beautiful backyard garden and sculptures. Although we were responsible for our own food, we appreciated the juice, yogurt, muffins, flowers, and other goodies you presented us upon our arrival to welcome us. We travel extensively, and we are always thankful for a free washer and dryer, as well as a kitchen with everything we need to make our stay memorable and comfortable. Your dog, Nyla, is adorable. We only regret we could not fit her in our luggage. You are to be commended for a job well done in training her and allowing her to express her love to perfect strangers. In closing, we thank you for your sincere hospitality and for genuinely caring about and catering to our needs. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Cottage to others, and we plan to make the Cottage our “home away from home” on our next visit to the Washington, District of Columbia Metropolitan Area. Yours truly, Gil
We've rented apartments, homes, etc. all over the world and have to say that this was a very comfortable, well-appointed (high quality furnishings) and lovely cottage. Our host, Jack, could not have been more friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Jack provided all kinds of information on nearby stores, restaurants, etc. and was always available by phone, email (or in person) to answer questions or make further suggestions. In addition, he is a truly caring individual who even offered to give us a ride to the grocery store - seeing that we didn't have a car. Location The location is in a beautiful, safe and friendly neighborhood and is a short mile to the metro/train station - an easy walk (sidewalks) for most. Just a few steps more and you're on King Street which takes you into Old Town Alexandria with shops, restaurants and historical sights. Take the free "Old Town" shuttle bus from the metro station to go up and down King Street to save your tired feet. Accommodations The cottage is two stories - the top, entry floor is the bedroom - which converts to a living room during the day - using a day bed with pull out trundle mattress to make a king-size bed. The bedding was very comfortable and high quality - and easy to pull out and use. The bed, when fully extended - takes up most of the room - so two will fit comfortably in the cottage. Some people might prefer a sofa bed rather than daybed and trundle - that's just personal preference. There is a TV with cable and a DVD in the room - with plenty of stations/programming - and movies that Jack has left for visitors. Down a narrow staircase is the eat-in kitchen and back door to the patio. The kitchen is quite a good size and very well-appointed. Like-new appliances and full-size refrigerator. We were pleasantly surprised to see some food basics in the refrigerator - so very thoughtful of Jack to welcome his guests with food and coffee! There is also a TV in the downstairs kitchen - a nice touch! The patio is quite pretty - cozy and private - with a table and chairs. A few steps outside the patio door is the laundry room with full-size washer and dryer - very much appreciated if you're traveling for more than a few days! There is no doubt that this will be our "go-to" place for future visits to D.C. area. But make sure you book the cottage EARLY - it's very popular!
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at this delightful cottage. I agree with all the superlatives you have read in other reviews here. The location was ideal. The walk to the metro through residential streets was very pleasant. Lovely quiet neighborhood so close to Old Towne. Our host was so very thorough in anticipating our every need. The cottage was nicely furnished. very comfortable and cheerful. The patio out back was a lovely bonus. Thank you Jack and thank you Nlya. We hope to return,
I had a wonderfully relaxing stay, thank you so much, Jack and Nyla! After a day filled with sightseeing and/or friends, it was the perfect, quiet suburban refuge to return to :) Being able to sit outside in the beautiful garden was a huge plus, greatly supporting the 'home away from home' feeling... Personally, I loved the bi-level set-up, however I imagine it a bit inconvenient with several guests. I absolutely recommend this cosy cottage for individuals or couples looking for a clean and very convenient location near DC!! Just don't book the days I'm looking to return... ;)
This is a nice home with a wonderful location. You should be aware that it is quite small with limited seating. The first floor is a bedroom with a trundle bed vs king. The lower level is a kitchen with two stools for seating. The only space to relax with a glass of wine is the tabe outside, which is very pleasant if weather cooperates. The owner is very responsive.
My husband and I had the pleasure of staying in Jack's cottage for a week. It is located in a quiet and lovely neighborhood, and it met all our needs. The kitchen is well stocked, and sitting out on the patio overlooking his landscaped yard was the perfect way to end a day of sightseeing. Jack is a welcoming host, very knowledgeable about the area, and will answer questions you may have. He has all the necessary visitors information at your finger tips. Alexandria's free "hop on, hop off" trolley is convenient for Historic Old Town, and the metro is easy to maneuver to D.C. sights. We highly recommend Jack's cottage.
I just wanted to say that our stay at your Cottage was the most memorable experience we've had! The location is ideal - close to Old Town, 15-minute walk to Metro, 15 minute drive to Mount Vernon, etc. We loved having the kitchen available to us and your neighborhood is extremely beautiful and safe! We had a wonderful time visiting the area (our first time staying in VA) and will definitely stay at the Cottage again!
My husband and I came home to the DC area for a Skins game and had a great time. The cottage is in a perfect spot. It's in a really nice, friendly neighborhood. When we weren't out visiting friends we walked to Old Town every night. There are so many nice restaurants and shops within a short stroll. I went to the Whole Foods for a few things and it's just a minute down the road. We did not use the Metro this time but it was nice to know it's only a few blocks away if we needed it. Jack is a wonderful host!
Our Daughter sent us away for our 44th Wedding Anniversary to the Cottage, it was quaint, clean and well maintained. We love the Garden, we had our Breakfast on the Beautiful Patio. The Owners Jack and Nyla was very accomodating .We enjoyed King St. the shops and Restaurants. We would indeed stay at the Cottage again if Jack and Nyla would have us.
The Cottage is a charming spot in an upscale neighborhood. The two of us were comfortable in every conceivable way: nice bed, linens; extremely well-equippped kitchen; wifi; terrific private patio; W/D; easy access to downtown Alexandria and Metro; calm place of respite from D.C. area touring; lovely art; very welcoming, accommodating host (Jack); and of course, we adored his 4-footed friend--Nylla. (Only caveat might apply to those with ADA concerns, since stairway that goes from bedroom/bathroom on entry floor to kitchen and patio area downstairs is quite narrow/steep.) We loved The Cottage and hope to return during subsequent trips to D.C.
We spent a week this past July in the Cottage and had a great time. We felt comfortable enough to ask Jack for suggestions on eating out or anything really, but he was never intrusive during our stay. Everything we needed was easily accessible and very hotel-like. Upon our arrival we found a welcome binder with maps, metro info, local eatery menus, information for tourists on local attractions, etc. It had everything you needed to have a great time during our stay. I definitely recommend the cottage just as much as I would a hotel! You have everything from a full kitchen to an outside patio with a grill for barbecues at a much more affordable price than a hotel, which the cottage is definitely comparable to if not better. The cottage is only minutes away (walking distance) from the metro that takes you into DC and the famous King Street that offers dining, shopping, and entertainment for all ages. When they say everything is bigger in Texas, it is no understatement, but staying at the cottage with all it's charm in such a beautiful and historic neighborhood, gave us a more authentic experience of colonial times. My only concern would be the bed, which was a little uncomfortable at times, but what I hear from Jack he was expecting a new one soon and the bathroom, which seemed perfectly fine to us, will be upgraded soon, and since it's taking me so long to post this review, it probably already has!! Should we ever go back to the DC area, the Cottage will be our first choice!!!
Our May 2012 week at the Cottage was Go-Go-Go! Graduation, shopping, site seeing, tours-everything we could put into a 24 hour day. And each night Jack's charming, affordable Cottage truly became home for the four of us. Evenings on the beautiful, quiet patio relaxed us. With a clean, well stocked kitchen, we were able to fix several meals, which was a real plus for the travel budget, and the separate, fully equipped laundry room was a life saver! Jack accommodated all our needs while allowing us our privacy; we really appreciated the "information binder" with helpful tips on everything from places to eat, to directions for using the cable TV. Although we had a car, the walk to the metro was very pleasant. We enjoyed strolling through historic Alexandria, with quaint shops and a variety of wonderful restaurants. This is definitely a safe, charming neighborhood, and we thank Home Away for helping us find "the Cottage". Great for couples (even two couples, like us), families with kids and singles. Highly recommended.
My husband and I stayed a week at Jack's cottage and had a wonderful time. It was near the metro which we walked to everyday. The walk to the metro felt very safe. The cottage was lovely, Jack was awesome, and we had a wonderful time. If we were ever back in the area we would stay at this place again.
Stayed at the property during the entire month of January 2012. Jack was extremely helpful throughout my visit. The location is very nice and only a short walk to the Metro and Old Town. The Cottage was updated, neat and perfect for my needs. The Cottage is highly recommended and I would absolutely stay at this location again.
We stayed at the cottage the last week of October. Perfect weather, nice 15 min walk to the metro in the am. Very clean and well appointed. Perfect for my husband and I and our 13 year old daughter. Would have been tight quarters for a family of four, but perfect for 2 or 3! Great little kitchen, eating area, patio and laundry facilities. Jack's back yard is beautiful! The neighborhood is very nice and we felt safe walking back from the metro even after dark. Thank you Jack!
I usually stay in a hotel when in the DC area. Because of an extended stay I decided to try a rental instead. Jack's place met all my expectations. It is well located and comfortable. Jack was a great host who responded to all my request and at the same time was not intrusive. I really enjoyed having my coffee in the garden each morning. A beautiful peaceful setting. I look forward to staying here again.
Back home and very grateful for a delightful stay at your cottage. I miss Nyla greeting me on the patio and visiting with me while I ate breakfast. The conveniences you provided were remarkable ... coffee, cinnamon bread, flavored water, bathroom essentials including an endless supply of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, right down to Q-tips and cotton balls. We grilled steak and invited our daughter's family including their 6-day-old baby for supper on Sunday on your beautiful patio. How amazing that we as guests at your property were able to entertain as if we lived there! Thank you so, so much for everything.
Although we found the cottage a bit "cozy" for four adults, we nevertheless had a wonderful time there! Jack is a most gracious host and we loved Nyla! The Cottage is well appointed and has everything you will need for your visit. It is a short walk to the Metro station and the free Trolley to King Street. A large and very nice grocery store is close (less than five minutes). We especially enjoyed the patio area where we ate many meals and enjoyed the beautifully landscaped yard as we enjoyed cocktails in the evening!
I arrived to a fully decorated Christmas wonderland. I found it to be cheap and cheerful, exactly what most people need in terms of proportion. The location was also very good, near to Del Ray and King Street, what a lovely place in America. The owner was very hospitable and helpful, yet nor overbearing.
My husband and I recently (Sept., 2010) stayed at the cottage for a week of sightseeing and relaxing. It fit our expectations perfectly. Jack was as accommodating as everyone else has said, going above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Having our own kitchen, patio, back yard and laundry really made us feel at home. The walk to the Metro in the morning was easy, but a couple of times we took the Dash Bus back, after a long hot day of walking in D.C. If you don't have a car, I'd recommend that you visit the Transit Shop near the King St. Metro on your first day to figure out the bus/metro system and possibly purchase a Smart Card or weekly pass. We would definitely recommend this vacation spot and would stay there again. Jack is a real gem of a host!
This was our first time to use VRBO and were a little unsure of how it would all work out. Now, we are sold! Jack was such a gracious host and the accommodations felt like home. We had 5 people in the cottage and while it was a little tight at times--having 5 people sharing a any space can be tight and just goes with the territory on vacations, at least for us anyway--it was great. The backyard gardens are just beautiful and the neighborhood is very quiet in the evenings. The short walk (about 7/10 of a mile each way) is a nice warm up for the manymiles you will walk if you are visiting DC. We would definitely stay at the Cottage again! Thank You, Jack!
We found that all our expectations were met for a great stay near Old Town Alexandria and Washington DC. Not only is Jack a wonderful host, but his dog, Nyla was a nice bonus as well. The apartment features a superb kitchen with access to the garden, which for me, took the rental over the top. Sitting out there reading the paper or my book with a cup of tea couldn't have been more pleasant. We enjoyed the easy walks to the Metro and Old Town. One of the things one often doesn't often consider is the overall locale when making a review. This neighborhood setting is one of the nicest in which we have stayed. Don't hesitate to consider this when you need a place in the Washington DC metro area. I offer this without any reservations.
What a great place to stay with such wonderful hosts! My husband and I stayed at The Cottage 7/11/10-7/18/10. I'm so glad I booked early. The previous reviews were right, The Cottage has everything to be a home away from home. Located in a beautiful, quiet residential neighborhood, it is very clean with a full kitchen stocked with staples, full sized washer/dryer stocked with supplies, lovely backyard/garden, patio w/grill, Directv, good internet access, 20 min normal speed walk to King Street Station. If I have family or friends traveling to the area, I will insist they stay at The Cottage. Jack and Nyla are amazing hosts. So very helpful, kind and available without being at all intrusive. The Cottage is multi-level, like homes typical of the area, so being able to navigate stairs is a must. Nearby recommended eats: King Street Blues (1/2 block from King St) and Pines of Torrance (on King Street). Nearby recommended shops: The Christmas Attic, Today's Cargo, Irish Walk, The Book Bank, Potomac Bead Co. Nearby recommended attractions (other than American history/civic/military related): Medieval Madness, AMC movie theaters close to Eisenhower Metro. Jack and Nyla, thank you so much for sharing your cottage with us. We both look forward to visiting you and the area again! AS & KS, Roy, UT
As a Crhistmas present to my husband, we spent 3 nights at the cottage so we could tour Washington, DC. We couldn't have asked for a more comfortable location. Near the Metro, near the supermarket. During the reservation process, Jack was quick and informative. During our stay, Jack was equally accommodating. And to have the special addition of Nyla to throw a ball to and pet made us feel right at home!
We stayed at Jack's charming cottage in the early spring of 2010. One of the main reasons we selected the location was for the garden. We were looking for a private outdoor location to have our handfasting. Upon arrival on Monday, We let Jack know we intended to make use of his garden for our ceremony with our witness and officiant on Wednesday. The gardener was already scheduled to be there Wednesday afternoon; but Jack went out of his way without any prompting on our part to have the garden sorted out on Tuesday afternoon in time for our Wednesday morning ceremony. After the ceremony, we found a bottle of bubbly in the foyer with a note wishing us well. We're looking forward to going back for one (or more) of our milestone anniversaries. Jack's a great host, very good at anticipating every little thing but never intrusive. It was a great place to get handfasted and to honeymoon.
We did not find anything charming about this property & would definitely not recommend it. The bed was supposed to make into a KING size bed--it was very difficult to get in & out off, so we made it into two twin beds. The room was very small & no chairs in "bedroom". It really could not be considered a bedroom. The kitchen was difficult to get too--you had to go down some steep narrow steps to get to it. The whole cottage was old & not at all comfortable.
The cottage has a lovely, residential location & is neat & clean with a well-equipped kitchen. Our family planned to say 3 nights, but our children are adults & we found it a bit "too cozy" for us all. I would not recommend this for any more than a single person or a couple. Jack was very gracious & while we decided to check out after a single night, he has offered us to come back at another time when it's just one couple to enjoy the cottage.
We are a family of three and The Cottage worked perfectly for us. The Cottage is in a lovely neighborhood that felt very safe. Jack just happened to be arriving at the same time, so we got a chance to say hello to him then. He was very nice and welcoming. The Cottage is very cute and cozy and had everything we needed. We loved having the outdoor space and had breakfast there every morning. We also sat out there at night with a glass of wine, which was great after a long day of sightseeing. It was wonderful to have both a kitchen and a laundry room available. We did not do any "real" cooking, but you certainly could, it looked to have everything you would need. We did make use of the coffee maker and toaster each morning, as well as the microwave. We also used the oven to warm up some leftovers one night. I was also happy to have the laundry room, we had just come off a 7 night cruise and it was wonderful to be able to do a couple of quick loads. The location was perfect, we could walk to the King Street Metro with ease, where we could either jump on the Metro to DC, so take the Trolley down King Street to get to shops and restaurants. We were also close to Mt Vernon by car. It was great that we could park for free and walk when we could and drive if needed. Jack was the perfect host, he even left us homemade cookies one day. That was a treat! He was also very responsive to our emails before we arrived. I left him a note that the coffee maker was not always working as expected when we checked out. He emailed me that same day to thank me for letting him know and that he had purchased a new coffeemaker. As I said The Cottage is cozy, when the day bed is made up to a king it does take of most of the first floor, so we did put the air mattress our son (11 years old) slept on, downstairs in the kitchen area. Both were very comfortable and we all slept well. We chose to keep the beds set up, which did limit the space, but it worked out just fine. The stairs to the kitchen are steep, again not an issue for us, but for those with very small children or those who would not feel comfortable walking down steep stairs, The Cottage may not be right for you. Other than those caveats, I believe most people will love The Cottage. We very much enjoyed our visit to The Cottage and would not hesitate to book it again in the future. Great location, Great Price, Great Host, Great Place to lay your head at night! Thank you Jack!
This cute little cottage is perfect. It is in a cute and quaint neighborhood with friendly neighbors. Jack is gracious and wonderful. I love Nyla. She is such a sweet dog. You can walk to the metro if you don't mind walking. It is only about 3/4 mile. It is very close to King Street. My husband and I really enjoyed our stay. Thanks Jack for sharing your little gem with us. Kristi and Jim
The cottage is a gem! Jack has considered everything to make this home cozy, warm and inviting. My Mom and I stayed here for a week and loved the fact that the bed can be two twins. The bathroom is comfortable and the kitchen is wonderful! What a treat to stay in such a wonderful neighborhood with a phenominal host. Jack did everything to make our stay so comfortable and wonderful - the metro is not far away and it's great to have a car in DC to get into the countryside. We highly recommend Jack to be your wonderful host when you visit DC. It was also nice to have such a peaceful cottage to return to after a day of sightseeing - often full of people - and here you have the peace of the cottage to return to. The backyard is perfect and we enjoyed having a washer/dryer available.
I would rate this experience as a definate positive! Jack has gone out of his way to provde guests with a delightful stay at his cottage. I was a bit apprehensive since we were a family of four. It was snug, but the positives certainly outwieghed the negatives of space. The full kitchen, the full size laundry, and an oasis for a backyard make this a retreat of choice!
My sister and I stayed at "Jack's Cottage" during our recent visit to Washington,D.C. What a delightful experience! The cottage was perfect and Jack was a great host. We really enjoyed the private patio and beautiful gardens--a great place to relax at the end of a full day of sightseeing. The "Cottage" was very private, comfortable and inviting. We are already planning a return visit.Thank you Jack for making our vacation a "10".
Our stay was very pleasurable. We liked the set up. It was small sweet and comfortable. The backyard was very nice. It was the last stop on our week long vacation and it was the most comfortable. Jack had thought of everything. Thank you so much
My husband and 2 children stayed here in early August for 7 nights. It was the perfect place to come back and relax after a long day of sightseeing. It was so clean and cute and very close to the Metro and downtown Alexandria. Jack was a great host and I highly recomend this rental if you are in the DC area! Thanks Jack!
My wife and I along with our two small children stayed at "The Cottage" from July 18th to July 25th. We were new to the VRBO website and were unsure of what to expect. It, by far, exceeded our expectations. "The Cottage" was tidy and meticulously clean. As advertised it contained a full size kitchen for preparing all of our meals, a patio for our evening cookouts, and a detached laundry room that was left unlocked whenver we wanted to do a load of laundry or two. The owner of "The Cottage", Jack, went above and beyond on any request that was asked and truly mae our stay at "The Cottage" a delight.
This was our first family visit to the Washington DC area. We were grateful for the relaxing private back yard that we came home to each evening to unwind. Jack was helpful in many ways from having maps and brochures in our cottage to help us navigate the area, to sending items back to us that we had forgotten upon leaving. The cottage was cozy, immaculate, and conveniently located. We wish we had brought our bicycles as it would have been easy to keep them in the back yard. We enjoyed the backyard immensely and had fun watching the baby robins make their first flight from the nest. We visited with some of the neighbors and found all of them to be very friendly and welcoming. We have rented properties from VRBO in the past and once again were very satisifed with our decision.
Old Town Alexandria is a charming and pleasant place to stay with many amenities. DC is easily reached from the two Metro rail stations. Jack's Cottage is a joy to come home to in the evening after many hours of sight seeing. It is in a quiet neighbourhood, is beautifully fitted out and most comfortable. Jack was wonderful, most personable and always available for advice and help. The Cottage receives a very strong reccommendation from us. Thank you once again Jack
This is a terrific space - it's meticulously clean, beautifully decorated and the kitchen has every thing you could want. A huge bonus is the georgeous back yard with patio. The neighborhood is beautiful and the location couldn't be better for sighseeing - just minutes from Washington DC and a short drive to many other area attractions.
My husband and I were very satisfied with our stay at this property. Jack is a great host and goes out of his way to accommodate his guests. We never had a problem with parking and found the walk to the metro just right. Truly a home away from home. FYI-there is a free trolley that runs along King Street where many local shops and restaurants are. Jack- thanks for a great stay. We hope to be back again.
My family stayed here for 5 days. We did not have a car because everything was accessible within a very short walk to Old Town and the metro stattion. The cottage was charming and totally accommodated our needs. The outdoor patio was a delightful place to dine in the beauty of the backyard. The owner, Jack, was concerned for our comfort and saw to any needs we had. The neighborhood was quiet and picturesque. Having access to the laundry room was an added bonus. We would definitely stay here again .
My wife and I loved the warmth and beauty of the neighborhood, as well as the coziness of the cottage. The downstairs kitchen was a perfect way to begin our day with coffee and a meal before heading out to DC for sightseeing. The first week we walked everywhere, and the Metro depot in downtown Alexandria is 15 minutes away. The second week we rented a car and there is adequate parking on the street in front of the cottage. Jack actually drove us to the dealership when he found out that we were about to take the bus. He is a real gentleman and is there when you need him, but respectful of your privacy. I've recommended the Cottage to my Sister and Brother-in-law for a visit next year and we hope this place is still available when we vacation here again in the future.
