    Wonderful place to stay

My wife and I and our dog stayed three nghts during a heat wave. Very much appreciated the excellent AC. Sitting on the porch in the evening for wine and meals was great. The host, Tom, was very responsive and helpful. The guest house is on five acres that are beautifully landscaped. Anyone who stays should visit the garden and see th apricot trees planted in 1913. Very quiet. A great loction to explore and enjoy the central coast.

From the moment I booked, Tom’s communication was spot on! I was greeted by family members when I arrived and then Tom gave me a tour of the property. I was then left alone to enjoy the beautiful, peace and quiet with my pup. Everything was wonderful. Thank you Tom and Peggy! Miles and I will be back!

We usually stay in SLO but decided to stay a little farther out for graduation. The guest house at Portola Inn was a perfect get away from the craziness of SLO and all the people and activities. It had a kitchen so we could have prepared breakfast there and a great swing in the front where we could end the day with a glass of wine. Dog friendly and a great grass area for the dogs. We’ll be back to explore more of Atascadero and the nearby wine country!

The owner Tom, has a keen eye for beauty in every corner of his property. The only Guest House, is nestled in behind were events take place. With a beautiful views of robust trees, mountains and grass where we took some sun with our 4 legged Babies. Morning coffee in the porch seeing birds using the 2 turtle fountain was a delight! The beautiful property has well thought trails full of trees, flowers and plenty of places to sit and relax. We thank Tom and family for such a memorable time and well deserved R and R!! We will come back without hesitations.

We rejuvenated in the peaceful and private countryside while enjoying all that Atascadero had to offer! We walked the beautifully manicured grounds and felt right at home. Tom is a wonderful person! This guest house was perfect for the quiet getaway we were looking for. The grounds were lovely with nice paths to stroll with our dog. The house itself had ample extra bedding and washer and dryer. We cooked a lot during our stay. The stove was very nice. The pans and utensils were a bit basic for what we needed but still worked out pretty well. The host, Tom, went out of his way to be helpful. He loaned us an Ethernet cable and gave us good recommendations for a local seafood market/restaurant. He was available by phone for most of our stay and got back to us pretty quickly to answer our questions. The location was a short drive to Morro Bay and SLO for the days we wanted to be out and about. There’s not a lot going on in Atascadero itself but there’s a cute downtown area with shops and restaurants that we enjoyed. Overall we had a wonderful stay and definitely recommend this property.

This was such a great place to stay for our visit!! The property, the Portola Inn, is immaculate, and the guest house was very clean and appropriately equipped when we arrived with our dog. We truly appreciated having access to the large property, and the beautiful grounds and landscaping, to walk and play fetch with our furry family member. There are plenty of large trees that provide shade and lots of greenery to enjoy while walking the trails on the large property! The house provides simple but comfortable accommodations, and the kitchen was well equipped and the house had plenty of sleeping accommodations for a one bedroom. The house is a minutes away from downtown Atascadero and a short drive from Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo, and also centrally located for visits to Morro Bay, Cayucos, and Cambria. It was a great place to call home base for our visit. Tom (his wife was away for the weekend) was a terrific host, and made sure to give us the personal welcome and touch, and he could not have been nicer, more helpful, and responsive. All in all, it was perfect for us and we hope we can visit a couple more times before our son comes home for the summer from Cal Poly SLO. If you're looking for a great place to relax and enjoy the property, this is the place for you!!

Our recent stay in Atascadero at Tom's Guest House during our Paso Robles wine tasting weekend was terrific. Tom's communication before our arrival and in welcoming us to the property was excellent. We used the full kitchen to prepare meals. We also hoped to have access to an outdoor grill, and Tom was accommodating in providing that option for us. The listing's pictures give an accurate account of cleanliness, comfort, and the charming surroundings on the property. The location was convenient to wineries in Paso. Overall, we would be glad to come back for our next wine tasting weekend. Thank you, Tom!

This guest house was an ideal find...Great location, beautifully kept gardens and trees, quiet and peaceful, reasonably priced and the owners were very hospitable, a pleasure to engage with. We find it difficult to find a place that meets all our needs (affordable, allows dogs and choice location to the area beauty) in the SLO area, this place met and exceeded them all. We would love to return to stay again. Thank you Tom and Peggy for sharing your heritage home. We needed a place to stay for a month between selling our home in LA and moving in to our new home in Atascadero. We couldn't have found a more perfect property -- and host -- for our needs. This guest house is standalone and equipped with everything we needed for a lengthy stay -- fully stocked, washer and dryer, plenty of parking -- and sits on gorgeous acreage with oaks, well landscaped grounds, and carefully tended gardens. After a long and complicated move, waking up to a view of majestic oaks outside our deck made it all worthwhile. To top it off, we couldn't have asked for a better host. Tom was quick to welcome us, accommodating of our schedule, and happy to offer insights and suggestions about our new neighborhood. We hope to count him as a friend long after we've moved into our new home up the road.

We especially enjoyed being able to take a morning stroll on the property. It's filled with fun vignettes and interesting rustic treasures artfully arranged throughout. One of the biggest highlight was the little turtle fountain trough at the base of the patio. It was visited by many beautiful birds in the morning including a brilliant Townsend's Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Anna's Hummingbirds, both Golden and White-crowned Sparrows, American Robins and more! We were so pleasantly surprised with this property. My husband and I stayed here with our 3 young sons and it was the perfect location for our little ones to run around and explore. The gardens are majestic, we loved walking around every morning and watching a family of deer wander the grounds. The location is quiet and so very lovely, the photos do not do it justice. My boys felt so at home here everyone slept wonderfully. The house was fully equipped and clean. During our stay it was moderately warm (especially for us San Franciscans - 80 degrees), but since the house is shaded by tons of beautiful trees and there are several windows in the house, we got a wonderful cool breeze. Tom and Peggy were very welcoming and let us know when we stay next time they have some fun outdoor games the boys can play with. We were also able to catch the early evening lighting and got some wonderful pictures of our family on the property. I would highly suggest brining a good camera. We can't recommend this place enough, we will definitely be coming back. Thank you Tom and Peggy!

This was a great spot if you want a convenient place to tour the central coast -- Paso Robles, Morro Bay, Cambria, etc. The decor is rustic and a bit dated for the price, but the full kitchen was great and had nice appliances. Overall, a good place to stay. The owners were friendly!

Nice retreat from busy motels/hotels. It was perfect location and size for are two small shelties with private grass area. Nice short trails to take dogs for a walk. Private and far enough away from the main inn. Cozy and comfortable, great direct tv connection with two large flat screens, one in bedroom & one in living room. Kitchen area with nice size table for eating. Atascadero down the country road, Paso Robles(10miles away)& scenic Morro bay not that far. Great location for wine tasting. If you stay for any long vacation time there is a washer & dryer for your convience. Interior is modest but I would imagine it is easier that way to keep clean and accommodate for dog people. We totally appreciated the fact we could bring are dogs along for a brief get away. All in all very satisfied!

It was a beautiful property with lovely landscaping. Nice place, quiet, with a lot of trees and birds. I recommend it for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You can sit on the patio for hours and enjoy the ambiance, or drive to Morrow Bay in 20 minutes where it's 20 degrees cooler. It was hot the weekend we visited, but Tom and Peggy did everything they could to accommodate us. They are a lovely couple. Would definitely come back again...

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend and wished we could have stayed longer. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The house, which sits at the back of the property, has a view from the top of the hill looking down on oak trees, fields of grass, the works. The house was larger than I expected with a walk in closet in the bedroom where we could keep our bikes. The kitchen was fully equipped and even came with complementary coffee and tea, the good kind. The house is very private. We never saw anyone there. I would definitely stay here again.

The guest cottage was set privately in the back of the property, with a magnificent view of the rolling hills. There was nothing quite like enjoying a glass of local wine on the private deck, watching the sun set behind the hills. The glow it left in the sky was indescribable. Not only is the location perfect for visiting the wineries, but we found a fabulous Mexican restaurant at the bottom of the street, (Marina's Kitchen) and ate there twice during our stay. The hosts were delightful, and extremely respectful of our privacy. We have definitely found our new go to place, and could not have been happier with the cottage.

We stayed at the Guest cottage over New Year's this year. It was one of the best locations we have stayed. The cottage looks out over a view of a majestic, towering oak tree and rolling hills uninterrupted by lights or buildings. The hosts greeted us upon arrival and the place was spotless and comfortable with every ammenity needed. The bed was a slice of heaven after a full day of seeing the sights and the kitchen gave us plenty of room to have two friends to dinner and all enjoy the serenity. I look forward to renting it again when it's warmer weather so we can sit on the amazing front porch and soak in the view.

The Guest House provides a quiet comfortable home base for our family when we visit Central Coast/Paso Robles area. The location is convenient to the varying areas our travels take us. Our most recent trip was the 4th or 5th time we chose Portola Inn. Pictures simply cannot capture the magnificent exterior views, when the sun crests over the hills in the distance. The Inn provides a venue for weddings and other celebrations, and the grounds contain a garden as well as paths and trails that our dogs LOVE. Many of the decorative items throughout the property are 100+ years old, which add to the rural feeling. But, as rural as it seems, the house is about a mile from highway on-ramps and commercial areas, which can come in handy. The proprietors are pleasant people who are there when you need them, and not when you don't. Inside, the open space split between the living room, kitchen, and dining area is more spacious than we really need. All kitchen needs are covered if you want to cook something, and the dining table is large. The bedroom's queen bed is waaaay more comfortable than you expect. The bath entrance is on the hallway, not the bedroom, which is good for larger groups. The full size washer and dryer could also be life-savers, I imagine, although we have never used them. The setting is comfortable, the wifi and all other features work; the house provides everything you could need for a comfortable visit. We will return in 2017!

We enjoyed coffee under the huge oak trees and saw some dear one morning. Definitely a hidden gem in Atascadero! Very clean with comfortable beds and nice linens. Our family of four spent pretty comfortable three nights at Portola Inn guest cottage. The cottage has most of the nessesaties, but is rather basic. The property is gorgeous with lots of beautiful oaks trees, very private. The cottage unfortunately had a really persistent unpleasant smell, which have mostly had gone away after a couple of days, but sort of marred the initial impression of the property. The washer and dryer was a plus as well as a very nice size bathroom. I would consider staying here again.

The grounds have a real diverse garden and footpaths to follow around it with a lot of interesting features throughout the site. We got to meet Tom and his family, which added to the charm for us. The bed was more comfortable than we expected. Everything worked. We no longer take for granted that the water gets hot quickly, the outlets all have power, the windows close all the way, etc. We were very happy with the accommodations. We brought our six-year old child (who has special needs) with us, and she loved roaming the grounds. The swing was her favorite spot! We had no worries about her safety, as the grounds are gated and private. That enabled US to relax! Cal Poly daughter drove up for a night and asked me Mom, how did you find this place? I was thrilled when my friend from Atascadero told me about the Portola Inn. In the past I have stayed at the local hotels which I found too sterile & impersonal, just places to sleep. The Inn, however, is a cherished refuge, a place to wander the grounds, sit and reflect, a place of incredible natural beauty. My sister's family and I stayed over a three day weekend. The cottage was roomy and comfortable. The grounds around it exquisite. Towering oaks and the sounds of a stream greeted us. I loved seeing the wildlife! We saw quail, heard frogs and admired lizards. Leaving the grounds, my nieces and I were surprised by a mother deer & her two fawns. We were delighted! The owners, Tom & Peggy, went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and comfortable. Such lovely people! I would recommend this rental without reservation.

We were looking for a quiet place where we could bring our two little dogs. We found the guest house very clean, quiet, and comfortable. There is a small fenced back yard for the dogs, and a nice area to walk them. The Portola Inn is close to town and is accurately portrayed by the pictures. It is located within a 20 minute drive of several award-wining wineries. There are amazing oak trees on the property, and lots of flowers and manicured lawns. We saw deer most mornings. There is a small park-like area with a swing, barbeque, and picnic tables. We enjoyed a bottle of local wine out there with some smoked salmon, cheese and crackers that we bought at a Trader Joe's that's about 5 miles away. The super nice proprietor gave us great advise on where to eat, although the guest house has a full kitchen. We especially liked the folks at the Haven, where we ate hot sandwiches and drank wonderful wine from local wineries. We found Atascadero to be a community of friendly people. The guest house is not fancy, but we gave it an excellent rating because it exceeded our expectations and was exactly what we needed.
