Vintage River Cottage on 3 acres with view of the Okatie River. Ideally located halfway between Savannah, Beaufort and Bluffton...an easy drive to the Savannah/Hilton Head airport. The Lowcountry at its orginal best. Old live oaks, camellia forests, magnolias, a perfect location from which to explore the Lowcountry. This cottage is the original house on the property known as Cedar Bluff, owners live in big house steps away. Still private and quiet.
The cottage shares the property with the owners who live in big house nearby. The cottage features a wonderful screened porch, hardwood floors, ceiling fans throughout. Dating from 1925, the cottage has lots of character, all the necessities, plus some, but keep in mind that it is almost 100 years old so if you are looking for something new and modern, this is not for you. If you want to experience the Lowcountry as it used to be and in some places still is, then this is your place.
The owners also offer a small log cabin in Western North Carolina near Cashiers, Glenville, Sylva, VRBO #300192

Had a wonderful time staying at Okatee Cottage. It was nestled between Oaks and evergreens along the banks of the Okatie River. We spent most of our time on the back porch enjoying the view and serenity of the cabin and surrounding area. A great place to take walks!
I love the low country and I wanted to share it with my sister. Also in these troubled times, I felt safer in a small community or rural atmosphere, so I sought out a place away from too many people. Okatie Cottage was perfect.
We had a very relaxing weekend. The cottage was lovely and the location was perfect for us. It was especially nice to have a large yard for our puppy to run and play. The Reeves were very nice and accomodating.
Great location, loved the living room but most the owners. Delightful and welcoming . The screened in porch was so relaxing and the view from the dock was beautiful.
We loved it! It was a perfect place to relax and unwind. Conveniently located to get out and see Savannah, Bluffton, Beaufort, Hilton Head and even Charleston.
My Brother and I had a great long weekend here and we would highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys historic charm. The layout of the home takes a little getting used to but by the end we did not want to leave. The covered dock was the highlight of the trip and we spent breakfast lunch and dinner out there enjoying the breeze and ever changing scenery. We were initially concerned with the proximity of the owners house and sharing the dock but in the end the communication was great and we felt very comfortable sharing the space. It worked out well that we planed a Saturday excursion which was the only time they requested the use of the dock. The dogs loved the yard and freedom but we didn't feel safe letting them swim because the currents were strong from the tide. There was a hose on the dock that they enjoyed a good spray down to cool off and we felt safe jumping in to cool off while staying near the swimming ladder. We loved the charming town of Bluffton and we ate well between the farmers market and The Old Oyster Seafood Market. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook and the entire cottage was very relaxing and comfortable. We plan to make this an annual retreat!
We and our dogs stayed in Okatee Cottage for two weeks and extended our stay for almost a week longer. If you want to experience authentic lowcountry living at its finest, this is the spot for you. The cottage has 1925 charm, but it is totally updated and has beautiful furnishings. It sits on a beautiful peaceful bluff overlooking the Okatie River, yet you are close enough to explore Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head and Savannah. The owners, Isabella and Jerry Reeves, are lowcountry natives and know everything there is to know about the area. They treated us as if we were old friends and did everything and more to make our stay a memorable one. Okatee Cottage and the Reeves will always have a special place in our hearts. We will definitely recommend Okatee Cottage to family and friends.
Isabella and Jerry have a very special property - the cottage is cozy and well-curated. We were looking for a place to self-isolate after leaving NYC during the pandemic and Okatee Cottage couldn't have been more perfect. The cottage is set on acres of property covered with giant trees and flowering bushes. From the porch, you can watch the activity on the river. We spent hours on the porch. We loved sitting on the dock at the golden hour watching nature do its thing. The Reeves' were so helpful and kind...and their dogs introduced our city dog to the pace of low-country life. The Spanish Moss bike trail is 20 minutes away and was a wonderful way to cycle safely in nature. Through it all, Isabella and Jerry were readily available and are super knowledgeable about the area. We would re-book again!
A beautiful view, warm and inviting cottage, secluded and quiet. Isabella is full of information and quick to respond. We will definitely be back. Laura W
We were comfortable here from the moment we arrived! Jerry greeted us within minutes and showed us around. He & Isabella are hospitable, friendly & knowledgeable about the area. Isabella's restaurant recommendations were spot on. We enjoyed exploring Beaufort, which is about 20 minutes away. Plums Restaurant, one of Isabella's suggestions, has a dog-friendly patio. We were able to take our dogs on a carriage tour of Beaufort, also. Jerry recommended Hunting Island State Park, where leashed dogs are permitted on the beach. We couldn't have asked for more gracious hosts or a more inviting place to stay!
Beautiful cottage, beautiful area! The owners were extremely welcoming when we saw them the day we arrived. The home is clean and spacious, and it is updated while still maintaining that older southern charm! The dock was beautiful as well, but just be aware you will need to go down quite a few stairs to get to it. There are also a couple stairs to get into the house - probably common for the area since near water, but worth noting in case you or your pet have any trouble with stairs. Our 14 year old bishon can't do steps anymore, but it's only a few so luckily I was able to carry him up and down. Also, the cottage has well water so just be prepared for a very strong sulfer smell when using the sink and showers. The owners have kindly provided a clarifying pitcher and have some bottled water available as well. Overall a wonderful place to stay!
The cottage was beautifully decorated, the furniture & art was wonderful. The venue could not have been better, the view of the river was so relaxing. Both Isabella & Jerry were very helpful throughout our stay. I would highly recommend staying here.
My wife and I loved the cabin, we get up every morning and walked to the river with our dogs! We also enjoyed the quietness in the evenings, and the sounds of nature. Views from the dock were spectacular! We are definitely planning on coming back to Okatie Cottage.
Words simply cannot describe the beauty of this place!! My wife and I had the pleasure of staying the week of September 1st. Mrs reeves and her family were very kind, welcoming, and a wealth of information about the area! Our second day there I caught an 18 inch flounder from the dock as well as several other fish that week. The views from the dock are amazing you can sit and watch dolphins come by in the mornings while you enjoy your coffee. The property is large and very well manicured. It's like stepping back in time with all the oaks and Spanish moss. Our mastiff enjoyed being able to explore the area and even made friends with Mrs reeves golden retriever wimby. If you are looking for a quiet getaway that is close to everything in the area I highly recommend this cottage on the okatie! I would like to thank the Reeves family for having us, and we look forward to a return stay!!
Isabella was very helpful in making sure we knew what the cottage provided for our stay. She and her husband were very friendly and accommodating. The cottage was so cute and we loved how it was decorated. We loved the dock but wished we had a better view of the water from this lovely front porch. Overall we loved staying here and would stay again if we come to the Beaufort area or decide to go to the coast to explore Savannah.
Nice quaint cottage of yesteryear carries you away from today's hectic lifestyles and societal paces. Located between HHI, Savannah, Beaufort and the Sea Islands makes a great location. We only wished that the weather would have cooperated more. I was able to have our Lab run somewhat free on the premises, he chased after some local deer and even managed to scare a few armadillos as well.
We had such a nice time at the river cottage. Isabella was a very gracious hostess. The place is charming, lovely and clean. We loved sitting out on the dock and enjoying the back porch. It was very well appointed and had everything we needed and more. We would definitely stay here again.
The cottage is a piece of southern comfort in the river front. Very cozy and comfortable. They have everything you need at the cottage. It does have well water, just FYI if your from the city (we are). Just a beautiful place inside and out!! Would definitely recommend.
Don and I could not have been more pleased with our accommodations and location than Okatee Cottage. Isabella was a gracious host and made us feel welcome from the start (we hope they had a good time at her reunion). The view from the spacious dock was breathtaking, and we enjoyed wine and visiting at the end of the day there. Property was immaculate and just as described. We would not hesitate to recommend this property. It is near enough to many activities yet is quiet, restful, and relaxing. The food at The Cottage and May River Grill in Bluffton is great. Don and Jayne B. Stuttgart, AR
We enjoyed our stay at Okatie Cottage for our visit to Okatie and a college golf tournament at nearby Callawassie Island Golf Club. The accommodations were perfect for two couples to enjoy privacy, when needed, but at the same time the cottage offered several wonderful gathering spaces. The living room dining room area can hold a large group, as we experienced when we hosted a men's college golf team and their families for dinner. The sprawling porch facing the river was very welcoming and also provided seating areas for many to experience the warm and humid southern charm of this gem hidden away in the low country.
The cottage is great, and the location is wonderful. We spent hours on the dock every evening just enjoying the views and the serenity. Isabella and Jerry were fantastic hosts. I can highly recommend this property.
The setting was gorgeous, and the house had a great vintage feel -- very gracious and Southern. And Isabella and Jerry were the perfect hosts.
We had a great time at Okatee Cottage : the house is very spacious, quiet, and very well furnished ; the dock and the terrace are very pleasant to relax at the end of the day. The owners who live in the main house right next to the cottage are very helpful and friendly. The location is perfect to visit the Lowcountry : even if Charleston is maybe a bit far away, we enjoyed driving to Beaufort, Savannah and Hunting Island. I would definitely recommend this cottage and would love to come back.
Accommodations were fine. The views were breath-taking. We got to fish off the pier/dock. Caught some fish. Saw some dolphins, crabs, deer, and a raccoon. The owner had a lot of tips on things to do and directions as well. We had a great time!
We stayed for a long weekend--to visit with our daughters and see the sights. It was difficult to do that sightseeing because the cottage and property continually said, Relax. The cottage itself is a reminder of times gone by--large great room, ceiling fans everywhere, inviting porch rockers. The AC and ice cube maker made for modern comfort in the June heat. The dock itself has a gazebo with hammock, ceiling fan and lights. A fishing line dropped immediately produced a good-sized stingray. We saw Dolphins on two mornings while sipping coffee. We did pull ourselves away for a riverboat your and dinner in Savannah and another dinner in Bluffton, but amid all the contemporary lodging, the Okatee Cottage stands out. If you go, try Joe's lobster place for hot or cold lobster rolls to go. And every so often look up at the magnificent trees dripping with Spanish moss.
First time in the low country and won't be the last! Our cottage was very spacious and located in a gorgeous secluded setting right near the water. This area has so much to offer and this property is centrally located to enjoy it all!
We loved our stay at Okatee Cottage. You will enjoy the spacious cottage and its beautiful artworks and other furnishings. The screened porch overlooking the river was a particular favorite for relaxing. Then there is the long boardwalk that extends into the river and is perfect venue for watching sunrises, sunsets, the tides, the dolphins and the generally beautiful view. Lots of sightseeing nearby -- Beaufort, Bluffton, Hunting Island Beach, Hilton Head Island and so on. We especially enjoyed Bluffton and pet friendly Hunting Island Beach. Lots of information on local attractions is available in the cottage. Your friendly and knowledgeable hosts, Isabella and Jerry Reeves, are also an invaluable information resource. Isabella and Jerry live in the big house which is located where the cottage once stood. When they decided to build on the property, they had the cottage moved to preserve it and continue to enjoy it. Although the cottage is in close proximity to the house, you still have a sense of privacy as the grounds are well landscaped and wooded. Pet owners will appreciate the ability to take walks with their companion animals. We consider ourselves fortunate to have found Okatee Cottage and to have had the Reeves as our hosts. We highly recommend this property.
This is our 2nd stay at this cottage. We enjoyed this stay as much as we did the 1st time. Jerry and Isabella are terrific hosts. There is plenty of space inside as well as outside. The cottage is very pet friendly and human friendly. The porch in the picture is awesome in the mornings!
My husband and my cousins enjoyed a wonderful week at this charming cottage. The cottage was very comfortable and located on beautiful grounds. The hosts were so friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be coming back.
Okatee Cottage is a gem! It provided a wonderful respite from all the busy activities of big-city metropolitan life. Isabella and Jerry served as excellent hosts, offering valuable information about the cottage, its history, and Low Country opportunities. The cottage was roomy, comfortable, clean, and convenient to Bluffton, Beaufort and the sea islands. The hosts had stocked the cottage with ample information and maps of the area that helped in deciding where we would spend time away from the cottage. We loved its location and used it as our base to explore, relax and have fun. Old Town Bluffton with all its history and eclectic shops provided opportunites for relaxed strolling through old oak trees seemingly decorated with Spanish moss. Hunting Island offered great opportunity for sun and fun at the beach. But one of the most enjoyable amenities was sitting on the dock over the Okatie River and soaking in the beauty of the view of the marshes of Pinkney Reserve and Callawassie Island. We actually watched an eagle swoop down and pluck a fish out of the river and then land on a branch of a nearby tall pine on the bluff with its lunch. Our cousins joined us mid-week and the four of us with our two toy poodles blended right into the laid back atmosphere of the Carolina Low Country. We are already looking forward to future getaways to Okatee Cottage and would recommed it for uncomplicated relaxation.
We spent two weeks in the the beautiful low country cottage. The setting was serene, the home spacious and beautiful with a never ending litany of sights and sounds to behold. Jerry and Isabella were wonderful hosts and always there whenever we needed anything. They were inviting and most helpful when it came to anything pertaining to the local surroundings. If you're headed to the low country, have a small group, a pet or a desire to have an evening snack along side the sweeping Okatie river, or better yet enjoy your morning coffee while watching the baby dolphins frolicking in the surf, then the low country cottage is for you. I was there a week for vacation and a week for work and was able to utilize my computer as if I was plugged into the office. All in all it was a peaceful visit in a comfortable cottage.
While recently attending a destination wedding at a venue in the S.C. Low country, i had the good fortune be referred to this quaint property when i requested an alternative to typical hotel/resort accomidations. This cottage, and nearby owners home, sit on several manicured acres overlooking the river and marsh. This cottage is absolutely delightful, impeccably decorated, and fully equipped for a very comfortable stay. The owners were so gracious and kind in every respect, and totally accessible if needed, to insure an enjoyable and comfortable stay. I enjoyed my stay so much that i extended it for a couple of extra days, and am making plans for a return visit in October ! I highly recommend this property to any one who enjoys taking time out for a little R&R with plenty recreation venues very close by...
We spent the month of March at the Okatee Cottage in the Lowcountry of SC. The cottage is spacious, clean and very well furnished...and the location is great. The property is quiet and private and right on the Okatie River. We traveled easily to Hilton Head, Savannah, Charleston, Beaufort and to visit our daughter in Ridgeland. We especially enjoyed the screened large porch for relaxing on warm days and walking on the grounds with our dog. The furnishings are comfortable and the artwork displayed in the cottage is beautiful. Isabella and Jerry were great hosts. We recommend the cottage and hope to visit again!
Having lived in the Low Country I had high expectations for my return visit and was not disappointed. This river property offers sunrise and sunset views -we enjoyed coffee on the dock, while the dolphins entertained us one morning on the river. The location is most ideal for having multiple choices of activities. Drove to Hunting Island and walked the wild beaches, one of the few places you can see horseback riding along the shores. In contrast the next day rode a tandem bike on the beaches of Hilton Head. Enjoyed the Southern hospitality of Isabella, she and her husband Jerry have a rich knowledge of the area and the cottage is well suited to sitting by the fire in the evenings dreaming about what to do the next day.
We spent a week and an unexpected extra day [due to grandson's football game] which Isabella OK'd while we were on the way. Jerry and Isabella were very, very good hosts. Since we arrived late on Friday [instead of Saturday morning] they had the cottage opened and ready for us. The weather was good - used the A/C for 2 days, then opened windows and doors for 4 days, and then had to turn on the heat the last 2 days. We were very comfortable at all times. Their was plenty of room for us, 2 dogs, and one of our grandsons. There was even a little study so we could continue our grandsons home schooling while our daughter worked. We spent mornings on the dock watching the sunrise and drinking coffee...so relaxing. The cottage is old and you need to ask Jerry about the history of the property - very interesting. We plan on returning next year. The owner's home is on the property but you would never know it. There is enough land to take walks [with or without dogs] and look at the beautiful surroundings. Our daughter and family live in Bluffton so we didn't do any sightseeing, but there was a lot of Halloween activity for the grandsons and us to participate in, plus markets in Bluffton and Beaufort. Both of these cities are easy to get to from this property [also Savannah]. I highly recommend this property if you like peach and quiet and relaxation.
Our sweet host was welcoming without being in our grill, the cottage is the kind of place you never want to leave, a real Hemingway retreat. Equally easy to get to Beaufort, Hilton Head, or Savannah, was just the perfect vacation. We just left and I can't wait to go back.
We stayed at the Okatee Cottage for one week and it is the best place to stay in the LowCountry. It is conveniently located to Savannah,Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort and Charleston. The owners Isabella and Jerry made the trip. They gave tons of information on the local area and were extremely knowledgeable on day trips from the cottage. They welcomed our two dogs and made us feel at home in Low Country. Would definitely recommend this cottage and we look forward to returning there in the near future.
Okatee cottage was a wonderful experience. I was initially skeptical because the cottage is on the same property as the main house (and not that far away); however, we still felt like we had the place to ourselves for the most part. The family was warm and welcoming, and the cottage was clean and spacious. The historical house has been wonderfully renovated to comfortably accommodate 2 couples. Also we LOVED having access to the dock and the water. The dog loved it too! Areas for improvement would be the kitchenware: there were a couple pots but no baking sheets. Also, we weren't sure about the proper manners when the family was down on the dock and we wanted to as well. Since we wanted some privacy, we ended up hanging out on the covered patio and leaving the family to enjoy the dock.
We loved our stay at the Okatie Cottage. The house is inviting and comfortable with a big kitchen. The grounds are lush. It is close to many Low Country destinations and we enjoyed seeing Bluffton and Beaufort as well as day trips to Savannah and Charleston (and the Middleton Plantation). Isabella was a delightful hostess and gave us so much information about the area. Would we go back? Yes. Recommend it? YES! If in Beaufort, try the Wren Restaurant.
I had the privilege of staying in the cottage for June 2011 & 2012. It is a lovely, homey, clean, quaint cottage set in the perfect location to relax after visiting many of the attractions in close proximity. The front porch was a favorite place to relax while sipping some morning coffee, afternoon tea or evening wine; many times reading a novel. The hammock is a fantastic place to take a siesta while listening to the birds and feeling the breeze through the screened windows. I love the cottage for its central location to Beaufort, Savannah and Hilton Head. The owners are more than accommodating and are eager to share their expertise in the local attractions. Even my teenage daughters and Balto, the dog, enjoyed our stay.
We loved staying at this cottage. We had relatives over and loved sitting on the porch after shopping in Bluffton and Hilton Head. Hope to stay longer next time.
Perfect location to make day trips, come back and relax on the screened porch, or go crabbing of the dock. I hope to make this a yearly vacation. I loved it!
My husband and I stayed over Easter weekend with our dog Buster It was the most peaceful, pleasant experience. We enjoyed the sounds of nature and the cool breeze blowing while sitting on the porch watching the world go by. It is an orginal low country cottage that has been completely renovated with all of the comforts of the 21st century but still maintains the special features of the orginal period built. Highly recommended if you want a place to get away from the hustle of the world and just relax!
A lovely cottage, very homey, and comfortable. The view of the May river is gorgeous, the property just heavenly. Sat on the dock by the water and read a book, watched many birds fly in and around. Close to many of SC loveliest towns-Bluffton and Beaufort. Thanks for sharing a little piece of paradise.
If you are looking for a peaceful, quiet and relaxing vacation and would like a hint of what low country living must have been like years ago...unhurried, tranquil, serene...Okatee cottage is the place! My husband and I along with my 83-year young mother and her spunky yorkshire terrier, Turner, spent three lovely weeks at Okatee Cottage in March. We arrived just as the bushes and trees on the grounds were budding and by the time we left everything was in full bloom and gorgeous! We felt at home as soon as we walked in the door. A favorite spot to relax was the large, comfortably furnished screened porch. The living room/dining room area with cozy gas fireplace provides plenty of room for indoor activities. And the spacious kitchen is wonderful for those who like to cook. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are decorated with unique, interesting artwork. The location is great for easy day trips to Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, Savannah and Hunting Island. Jerry and Isabella are friendly, gracious hosts and the cottage and grounds are truly a special place!
My husband and I stayed at Okatie Cottage for three weeks in November while we investigated moving to the area. We found the cottage cosy and comfortable. Concerns about warmth as the weather cooled were unfounded as the propane 'wood fire' and kitchen heater kept the whole cottage toasty. We enjoyed walking up to the river's edge for the views as well as exploring the extensive grounds. Our Australian Shepherd also appreciated the room to run and socializing with the owners' dogs. The owners, who live next door, were welcoming and very helpful. We recommend a visit!
We stayed here in November and enjoyed excellent weather - sunny and warm by day and cool enough in the evening to snuggle up in front of the fire on big sofas. We also ate breakfast on the screened porch watching the sun peek through the trees and glint off the river: the jetty seems to be a favourite roost for pelicans. The cottage is accurately described - lots of character but with everything you need including wi-fi - and very convenient for exploring Beaufort, Bluffton, the canopy roads and islands. We were warmly welcomed by the owners (and dogs!) and had enjoyed an exchange of emails before we left the UK including recommendations for things to do and restaurants not only for whilst we were staying at Okatie Cottage but also for before and after our stay. It really created a warm impression and heightened our anticipation; we would definitely stay here again.
