Captain Cook, Hawaii
This rustic wooden mountain cabin is situated next to a forest, in a secluded spot away from the main house, on a 3.5 acre farm. At an elevation of 2,100 feet, it avoids the summer heat at sea level ('Cool and peaceful..' - Teri), yet is close to Kealakekua Bay (5 miles), kayaking, horse-riding, the Captain Cook Monument, Place of Refuge, and wonderful snorkeling. Ten minutes south is a small shopping center, with supermarket, Chinese restaurant, sandwich shop, bagel shop, pizza restaurant, etc. Three miles north is Kainaliu Town, with theater/cinema, Blue Ginger Gallery, clothing stores and other quaint places. One of the finest restaurants in West Hawaii (Keei Café) is less than 15 minutes away, and there are other lovely breakfast, lunch, dinner places and coffee shops nearby. From the cabin, a short walk across the property and along private paths through coffee fields leads you down a road that takes you through natural Hawaiian flora.
The 760 square feet cabin consists of a living-room, sleeping loft, bathroom, and well-equipped Hawaiian-style lanai kitchen with screens that look into the forest ('The forest is full of birdsong' - Claudia & Chan). A redwood deck is situated under the kukui and macadamia nut trees, and has a Polynesian gazebo. A charcoal barbecue ('An evening barbeque and wine on the deck - perfect' - Barbara & John) stands nearby. The cabin itself is a single wall structure built from exterior plywood. It does not have sheet rock and, like other Hawaiian-built cabins and coffee shacks, the plywood constitutes the inner and outer walls. Windows are aluminum and glass. The kitchen windows are wood, glass and screen, allowing for excellent ventilation.
The farm has three beloved and gentle dogs, three cats, sheep, and chickens. The farm critters are kept in an area at the upper south end of the farm, and the cabin is at the lower north end, some distance from them.
Guests will find fresh farm eggs, homemade bread, a fruit basket, Kona coffee, and other goodies to get them started.
Also worth noting - Jeffrey is an enthusiastic table tennis player. There are four clubs on the Big Island so if you play, bring your equipment!
Generally our guests' feedback is that the cabin is a comfortable place to hang out, read, watch movies and just unwind, or a cool base to return to after swimming, snorkeling and exploring the warmer locations elsewhere.
The proximity of the cabin to the forest means that there are a variety of forest sounds that can be heard - lots of birds in the morning, and tree frogs at night (especially in the wet summer months). As in any woodland setting, nature makes itself known!

Everything is perfect.
Many thanks, Heide and Jeffrey! We had such a wonderful time at your lovely cabin and were so pleased to find it. We both spend a fair amount of time in hotels while traveling for work so something quiet and off the beaten path was exactly what we were looking for. It was the perfect spot for us. Thank you again for the wonderful fresh bread, fruit, jelly and mac nuts...above and beyond. It was a pleasure to meet you both, as well as your menagerie of fur and feathered friends, and we look forward to sharing your location with others. Mahalo nui loa! B & W LA, CA
We loved the cabin and its secluded situation in what felt like it’s own garden. The eggs, bread and other provisions left were delicious and most welcome. The cabin was very cosy and comfortable and going to sleep to the accompaniment of the coqui frogs very restful. Both Jeffrey and Heide were marvellous hosts and we loved the dogs too!
The Koa cabin is the perfect get-away for those who are seeking relaxation, solitude and beauty. We were lucky to be able to stay in this very comfortable, clean cabin for 8 days. Heidi and Jeffrey have obviously put a lot of love and consideration into this place, making it feel like home. They have thought of everything to make it comfortable. Upon arrival we were greeted with enthusiasm, a big bowl of fruit, delicious loaf of bread with a jar of homemade jam. There is a macadamia nut opener in the kitchen and more nuts on the ground than anyone could eat although I gave it a good try. They answered all our questions, gave us helpful tips about the area and made us feel so welcome. The lanai was our favorite place to spend our evenings. Every night after one of our adventures, my husband and I looked forward to sitting in the lanai, relaxing and staying warm and dry, even if was raining. If you are looking for a comfortable, private place to stay, look no further. This is a slice of paradise. I could write more about the delicious avocados and papayas that are yours for the picking but in order to appreciate the bounties this place offers, consider staying there. It is so worth it!
Your pictures do not do this place justice. Your cabin is beautiful and so are the surroundings. Jeffrey and Heidi are the best hosts too. They provide coffee, fruit, bread and so much more. We loved every minute here!! If you are looking for tranquility this is the place to be. We will definitely stay here again just for the wonderful feel of a home away from home. Don’t change a thing!! Laurie & Mike
We loved our week at the Koa Cabin. It was spacious but cozy and spotlessly clean. Just a few highlights: Afternoons sitting on the manicured lawn The birds (too many to mention but favourites were the pair of saffron finches that visited the picture window every morning and the flock of waxbills that bathed in the eavestrough every afternoon) The brilliant starry night skies The cool evening breezes Being greeted by the dogs and Cheez Whiz the cat The incredible welcome plate of fresh fruit (and home baked bread with lillikoi jam) Our hosts, Jeffrey and Heide, who have the hospitality gene in spades Trips to Hookane beach If we ever return to the Big Island we would love to stay at the Koa Cabin again.
Great cabin surrounded by the sounds of frogs and macadamia nut trees. The hosts, Jeffrey and Heide, are lovely and accommodating. We were a group of 3 and had a wonderful time with everything we needed. We especially loved all the fresh fruit and avocados and fresh bread when we arrived, what a treat! I would definitely recommend this location to someone who wants an experience off the beaten path.
We enjoyed our stay at this secret hideaway - Jeffrey and Heide were amazing host. They thought of everything to make the Koa cabin a home away from home. We got there quite late and were not prepared for the darkness but Jeffrey was quick to come out of the house and guide us through the one-way grassy road! My 7 year old son loved the cabin and wants to come back already. Heide made fresh bread and jam and fresh eggs which we enjoyed so much, along with the Kona coffee. Thank you so much for your welcome - even showing Mateo the mongoose! It sure was memorable.
We had a wonderful stay in the cabin and wish we could have stayed longer. Heide, Jeffrey, and two of their dogs greeted us with homemade bread and jam, fresh eggs and cheese, and showed us around, highlighting everything we needed to know. There was an incredible basket of fruit in the kitchen and many thoughtful touches throughout the cabin itself, which has an awful lot of character. The coqui frogs sang us to sleep at night and we loved waking up to the chorus or roosters, hens, and other birds in the morning. If you are considering staying here, do yourself a favour and book it! It was by far the best vacation rental experience we've had. Heide and Jeffrey are outstanding hosts and we hope to meet them again someday.
We loved our stay here and would have stayed longer if we could have. The area is quiet and felt very private (very relaxing ) the space is very well thought out with all the conveniences of home (and more) we loved the fruit and the chickens running around. The kitchen was perfect for cooking meals and having some extra condiments and things around was so very convenient. Bed was comfy and we got good use out of the snorkels. Amazing spot if you love quiet and nature (but also close to conveniences of captain cook areA) Mahalo!
