Lead, South Dakota
Seasonal Considerations: One of the endearing aspects of this cabin is its mountaintop location. We routinely advise our winter guests of the possibility of snow and ice (see the cabin’s pictures) and thawing and re-freezing creating slick conditions. We strongly suggest and it is preferable that our winter visitors use a higher clearance, 4WD vehicle (better than All WD) or at least have light tire chains (cable chains) and know how to put them on, possibly both. Please be aware, not all SUV’s are All WD.
Beyond the 'usual' cabin experience... Mountain Crest is a beautifully hand-hewn, non-smoking, authentic log cabin located six miles from Deadwood and seven miles from Lead. From its mountaintop perch you can see as far as 100 miles.
This cabin occupies five acres on a mountaintop northwest of Deadwood, SD, off county-maintained, Maitland road, the 'backdoor’ road to Spearfish, SD. Located near Deadwood, it is almost as close to Lead, SD, and only a short drive to skiing at Terry Peak or enjoying scenic Spearfish Canyon. Mountain Crest is wonderfully secluded and private, yet one can still enjoy free WiFi and Satellite TV.
This unique log cabin makes for a delightful romantic getaway. The trees that grew on my mountaintop are still there. They repose as a part of this handmade log cabin. There is something about the massive logs, the warm, cozy setting and natural serenity, the evening’s celestial beauty, and the amazing views. All of these combine to set human nature at ease and conjure up a special feeling of closeness.
Mountain Crest is well suited to enjoy a relaxing stay and still be able to entertain friends or family members at the same time. The acreage provides a large adjacent parking area that can accommodate multiple vehicles.
It is very clean and well maintained and provides guests complete privacy from the hustle of the outside world. The cabin is rustic, folksy, and user-friendly. Erything about the cabin is pretty ‘straight forward’ and set up as I would want to have available to me. A recent guest and his family have the cabin featured on the tube website as Mountain Crest.mp4.
Secluded, with dual access, well-maintained roads, this cabin works well to enjoy winter sports, delightful spring and summer activities, or to just escape and re-charge oneself. Because Mountain Crest is a more private location, housekeeping, snow removal, wood stove wood, propane, supply replenishment, and yard care, are more challenging. Vrbo lumps these under 'cleaning fee'.
Snow Mobilers: At a cool 6500' elevation, Mountain Crest enjoys abundant snow fall. Given its relatively secluded location and being adjacent to national forest land and trails, it is ideally suited to have fun playing in the snow. Where else can one drive their snowmobile up to their front door
