Tierra Verde, Tierra Verde
Steeped in history, Tierra Verde is a lovely, scenic community in Pinellas County, Florida. It comprises of several islands which were once covered entirely with mangroves, pines and bush. The islands, which were considered sacred ground by local Native Americans, were visited by notable explorers centuries ago. Perhaps, most notable among these were Juan Ponce de Leon and Hernando De Soto. Some notorious sea robbers were also said to have sailed the area. The community is thought to have been named for Detroit natives Hyman and Irving Green who played vital role in its development. But it may well have been for the area's green land.
The islands, numbering about 15, which made up Tierra Verde have been transformed into sub-communities. They include Entrada, East Shore (Bayview), Monte Cristo, Pinellas Bayway, Sands Point and West Shore (Oceanview). With water making up about three-quarters of its total area, this deed-restricted community is a great place to acquire a waterfront home. The higher percentage of the real estate inventory is made up of waterfront property. Housing options include single-family homes, condo units and townhouses. Increased interest in the area in recent years has seen property values surge tremendously. Local real estate, which was value at just $15 million back in 1980, was worth more than $632 million by the early 2000s.
Located in the southernmost section of Pinellas County, Tierra Verde lies along Pinellas Bayway. It sits close to the entrance of Tampa Bay. Pinellas Bayway bridges connect it to both the city of St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach.
The county park Fort De Soto is located near the southern rim of the subdivision. The area, which was bought by Pinellas County from the federal government in 1948, offers a nice place for recreation. Notable locations nearby include Shell Key Preserve and Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge.
A major subdivision close to Tierra Verde is Sunset Pointe at Collany.
