Sunny Isles Beach is a city off the coast of the Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is located on a barrier island and bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Intracoastal Waterway on the West. With a population of over 20,000 people, it is a small town that relies heavily on tourism in the southern tip of the Florida Peninsula.
Sunny Isles Beach was founded in 1920, when a private investor named Harvey Baker Graves purchased the piece of land in order to build a tourist resort. He named it Sunny Isles - the Venice of America. It was only after the 1930s, however, that the place became a popular tourist destination.
Today, the city is home to a mix of international residents and has been through a major redevelopment, with the funky 50’s motels and small beachfront hotels giving way to luxury apartment towers and hotels. Collins Avenue is the main attraction in town, with multi-cultured restaurants and stores, but there are also plenty of museums and parks in Sunny Isles Beach, like.the Pelican Community Park and Community Center, Heritage Park and Town Center Park.
Sunny Isles Beach has a central location, minutes from Bal Harbour to the south, and Aventura to the north and west. For those who are looking to settle on a place by the beach, but still within a short driving distance to a big city like Miami, Sunny Isles Beach is an excellent option.
With a Tropical Monsoon Climate, the city has hot and humid summers and short, warm and dry winters, which makes it the perfect getaway for those looking to escape the freezing temperatures of the northern parts of the country. The only downside is that Sunny Isles Beach is usually on the path of hurricane season, even though the last major storm to actually hit the town and cause damage was Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
