Stuart, Florida

 

Stuart is a peaceful coastal city situated along the Treasure Coast in the state of Florida. The county seat of Martin County is well regarded for its small-town feeling and has on multiple occasions been categorized among the finest small towns in the United States. It is the largest of the incorporated municipalities in its county and part of the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Slightly more than a quarter of the city’s total land area is made up of water.

 

The Treasure Coast was named after treasures believed to have been left in the area in the 18th century by shipwrecked Spanish galleons. The first settlers in this part of the Treasure Coast arrived in 1870. Otto Stypman, one of the original owners of the city’s downtown area, first christened the community Potsdam after his German hometown. The name was changed in 1895 to honor another landowner, Homer Hine Stuart, Jr., following the creation of the Florida East Coast Railway.

 

The Town of Stuart was incorporated in 1914. At that time, it was still part of Palm Beach County. The city charter was enacted in 1925, when the community was made the seat of the newly-formed Martin County.

 

Stuart has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and warm, dry winters. It receives significant amount of precipitation every year, with the months from June through September being the wettest. The city’s location near the coast ensures that temperatures do not rise too high. In addition, winters are mostly frost-free and temperatures rarely fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The great climate in Stuart has made it a popular place for owning a vacation home. Many of those in this city of more than 16,000 only spend winters here, but an increase has been witnessed in the number of full-time residents in recent years. Cost of living in the community is lower than the U.S. average.

 

Nicknamed the “Saltfish Capital of the World,” Stuart is renowned for the large number of mohawk sailfish that can be found in its proximity. Fishing charters for fishing enthusiasts is one of the popular businesses in the city. There are also several other tourism-centered businesses here, including those offering nature tours, snorkeling, cruises and boating charters.

 

The area has numerous schools including Crystal Lake Elementary School, Pinewood Elementary School, Port Salerno Elementary School, Redeemer Lutheran School, Stuart Middle School, South Fork High School and Martin County High School. Public education in Stuart is managed by the Martin County School District.

 

Among the places of interest in this coastal city is the two-mile long Riverwalk, where you and your loved ones have opportunity to fish or enjoy free concerts on weekends. Another of the places you may like to explore is the Stuart Heritage Museum, where artifacts dating back to the very beginning of the city may be found.
