Richmond is located in Fort Bend County, Texas. This area of Texas is located within the Houston, The Woodlands and Sugar Land Metro area. Richmond is 27 miles Southwest of Houston. The population in Richmond is just over 12,400 as of July 1st, 2018. The city of Richmond is 4.3 square miles. Hilmar Moore was the mayor from the year 1949 until his death in 2012. He made history as one of the longest serving elected officials in the United States.  

Education

Richmond’s school district is the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. There are three elementary schools within the Richmond city limits. They is the Jane Long Elementary School, the T.L. Pink Elementary School and the Deaf Smith Elementary school. The Wessendoff Middle School and Lamar Junior High School serve the sixth to eighth grade students. The Lamar Consolidated High School is the high school for students in ninth to twelfth grade. These schools all fall within the Richmond city limits but there are other schools outside the Richmond limits that have Richmond addresses but do not serve the actual city.

 Weather in Richmond

The weather in Richmond goes from extreme heat in the summer months to cooler and very mild in the winter months. June, July and August are the hottest months when temperates reach nearly 100 degrees on any given day. During the cooler months you can expect much milder temperatures. December, January and February have an average high of around 65 degrees. The average rainfall in Richmond is around 48 inches per year. In both 1949 and 1989 Richmond’s temperature dropped to a mere six degrees making it the lowest temperature ever recorded for the city. This happened twice in a forty year span of time. 

Facts about Richmond

-The city was incorporated in 1837 by the Republic of Texas along with 18 other cities. 

-Richmond got its name from the town of Richmond in England. 

-In 1839 Richmond published their first newspaper, the Richmond Telescope. 

-In 1842 the first courthouse was built here.

-In the 1920’s oil was discovered here which added to the economy. Up until that point cotton, sugar and rice were the main crops that grew here.

You can stop by Clancy’s Public House which is a popular bar and grill that has a menu featuring more than 30 different kinds of beers on tap as well as more than 50 kinds of bottled beer and ciders. You can visit the George Ranch Historical park which is located 30 miles Southwest of Houston. This sprawling park is located on a 20,000 acre working ranch.
