McKinney is in Collin County, Texas. It is part of the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex area. This section of Texas is located approximately 32 miles from North Dallas. McKinney is just shy of 63 square miles in size. From the years 2000 until 2003 the United States Census Bureau named McKinney as the one of the fastest growing cities within the U.S. Then in 2006 it topped that list once again. The population here in McKinney is hovering around 180,000 people. In May of 2017 McKinney was listed as the third fastest growing city in the United States of all time. Money Magazine also listed McKinney as the “Best Place to Live” in America back in 2014. The history of McKinney dates to 1849 when a man by the name of William Davis donated 120 acres of land that he owned for the townsite. For more than a century McKinney was known as the principal commercial center for the county. Things like corn, flour, cotton mills, cotton gins, cotton compress and a cottonseed oil mill were provided by the county seat to farmers to utilize on their farms. During this time churches, banks, schools and newspapers started popping up in McKinney. Then as time went on more businesses were started in this area such as an ice company, textile mill, dairy farm and even a garment manufacturing company. In 1848 the population here was just 35 but by the year 1912 the population grew tremendously to nearly 5,000. Then in the year 1953 the population here in McKinney grew to just over 10,000. The summer months are hot due to McKinney falling within the “Sun Belt” which is known for its humidity. The humidity makes McKinney feel much hotter than it is. The hottest time here is during the heart of the summer, July. Temperatures during this month can reach 96 degrees on any given day. The cooler months here are between the end of November through the end of February when the average low is around 35 degrees.
