Athens is a midsize city in Clark County Georgia, located in the north eastern part of the state. With a population of just over 193,000, Athens is the sixth largest city in Georgia. Athens is widely known throughout the state as being a college town, home of the University of Georgia, the state’s flagship public university and home of the Georgia BullDogs.
Athens has a humid subtropical cold climate which features hot humid summers and moderately cold winters. It has an average high of approximately 54° in January and over 91° in July.
Athens has some amazing and unique neighborhoods, each with their own distinct personality and flavor. Boulevard for example is located north of Prince Avenue less than a mile from downtown however stepping into it is like stepping back in time. The area features rustic warehouse exteriors and cool local restaurants such as Heirloom Cafe, Pulaski, and Heights BBQ. Cobbham, on the other hand, is a more traditional city suburb characterized by substantial well-built build houses, schools, and tree-lined streets.
The cultural crown jewel of Athens Georgia is the Georgia Museum of Art, the official state museum of art since 1982. The museum offers something for people of all ages as well as free admission to the public for all exhibitions.
Another popular draw is the State Botanical Garden of Georgia which covers 313 acres and operated by the University of Georgia. It’s possible Athens Georgia could be one of America’s more underrated cities. It’s a classic great little city that you’ve probably never heard of. In 2016, it was named one of the Top 17 Most Affordable Cities by mint.com. In 2015 it was ranked as one of the best college football towns as well as one of Forbes 25 best places to retire.
