Situated northeast of Atlanta, Braselton is a growing town straddling Barrow, Gwinnett, Jackson, and Hall counties in the state of Georgia. Its total area has about doubled through annexations of surrounding areas over the years as more people move here to enjoy the small-town ambiance or to work or do business. Being shared between four counties, the town is included in more than one statistical area. The parts in Barrow and Gwinnett counties are part of the Atlanta-Sandy-Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Area, while the Hall County portion is included in both the Atlanta and Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
The history of Braselton is traced to Harrison Braselton who bought 786 acres of land in the area to the north of the Hosch Plantation and built a home there. The town was named after the dirt farmer who was said to have married a daughter of the rich Hosch Plantation owner. A consortium headed by Georgian actress Kim Basinger bought 1,751 acres of land here from Braselton Brothers Inc in 1989 with the aim of making it a tourist destination. That project was eventually abandoned as Basinger declared personal bankruptcy five years later.
Braselton used to have a total area of about 7 square miles. But that has grown to 12.5 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau. The influx of people into the area has seen the community annexing some areas in its vicinity. As of 2000 census, there were 1,206 people living here, which represented almost 200 percent increase over the level in 1990. The number of residents was estimated at 9,476 in 2015.
This town shares border with the city limits of Hoschton, a city with which it shares a ZIP code. It borders the mailing addresses of Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Oakwood and Pendergrass. The most popular communities for home buyers in Braselton include Chateau Élan, Riverstone Park and Liberty Estates. Chateau Élan, a luxury community with lush landscape and awesome views of the north Georgia foothills, is perhaps the most sought-after. It offers outstanding Southern hospitality, world-class winery, health spa and championship golf among other exciting features.
Braselton has its own police department and two locations of the United States Postal Service. It is home to Georgia’s first net-new hospital in 20 years, opened by the Northeast Georgia Health System in Spring 2015.
The historic downtown and its quaint buildings accentuate the small town charm of Braselton. There is a lot to learn about the community’s past in the downtown, which hosts a variety of year-round activities for residents’ enjoyment. There’s a redevelopment plan for the area so it can offer more for both residents and visitors to do. The plan called for development of a Town Green that will cater to more shops and restaurants in the downtown.
