Covington is a city that is located in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. The population in Covington as of 2016 was around 10,500. This area in Louisiana is located at a fork of both the Bogue Falaya and the Tchefuncte River. According to the United States Census Bureau, Covington is a total of 8.2 square miles. How Covington got its name is an interesting story. Back in 1813 a man by the name of John Wharton Collins established a town that he named Wharton. So initially Covington was named Wharton but as time went on many people believed the town was remained after a war hero by the name of General Leonard Covington. General Covington was considered a hero for his service in the War of 1812. After establishing his home in the Mississippi Territory the following year he was killed during the Battle of Crysler’s Farm. There have been several other places that have been named after General Covington. Georgia, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Virginia all have a city named after this general.

During Hurricane Katrina this trail was badly damaged and took nearly two years to fix. It reopened in the beginning of 2007.
