Learn More About Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Ponte Vedra Beach is an upscale, seaside community located in St. Johns County, which is considered Florida’s most affluent county. Included in the Jacksonville Beaches area, the beautiful tourist resort area sits south of the Duval County boundary, north of Vilano Beach, and east of the Intracoastal Waterway. It has downtown Jacksonville located about 18 miles to its northwest and St. Augustine about 26 miles south.

While seaside communities were springing up all around north Florida, today’s Ponte Vedra Beach remained thinly populated through the 19th century. The discovery of minerals, such as titanium, zircon and rutile, in the area in 1914 kicked off massive growth of the community, which was aptly christened Mineral City. Mineral mining operations were discontinued after the First World War as a result of sliding demand. The National Lead Company bought land in the area and set out to develop something similar to Sea Island, Georgia’s The Cloister.  While researching for a new name for the community at the library in St. Augustine, the name of the Spanish town of Pontevedra was found on an old map at the approximate location of Mineral City. The name, which means “old bridge,” was then adopted for the resort town.

The amazingly beautiful seaside community is renowned for its stunning resorts, notable among which is the AAA five-diamond resort Ponte Vedra Inn and Club and the four-diamond Lodge and Club. Among the popular communities around Ponte Vedra Beach are Marsh Landing and The Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach. Marsh Landing is a lovely golf community boasting terrific natural beauty and home to numerous young families. The Plantation is a cozy, all-inclusive, and supposedly Ponte Vedra Beach’s only equity residential community offering superb amenities, including a gorgeous golf course.

Ponte Vedra Beach is home to more than 35,000 people. It boasts a high number of wealthy families and individuals who are drawn to the area by its natural beauty and serenity. Property prices here reflect the amazing qualities that this community has to offer. It was listed on the CNN and Money Magazine’s List of the Best Places to Live in 2005 – it was the first of only four locations in the state of Florida to appear on the list. Ponte Vedra Beach is a highly influential community in North Florida. Its notable people include Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., Bob Duval, Jim Furyk, Tim Tebow, Vijay Singh and Bill Terry.

The seaside community boasts well-rated schools. Public primary and secondary education is managed by the St. Johns County School District, considered among the best school districts in the state. The public schools attended by students in this tourist resort location include the Ponte Vedra Palm Valley-Rawlings Elementary School, Alice B. Landrum Middle School, Ponte Vedra High School and Allen D. Nease High School. Being an upper-income community, it is not surprising to see that Ponte Vedra Beach also has private schools.
