Created out of the original Everglades area, Davie is a very large town located in central Broward County, Florida. It has a population in excess of 100,000, making it one of the three most populous municipalities in the United States to be described as a "town." It covers an area of about 36 square miles, of which a little over 2 percent is water. The town is a major constituent of the Miami metro area.

 

Originally known as the town of Zona, Davie was established by Tamara Toussaint and Jake Tannebaum. It was named in honor of developer Robert Parsell Davie, who helped in draining the swamplands and bought around 27,000 acres of land in the area. A significant portion of the location was previously underwater - part of the Everglades. Davie has today grown to become an important, vibrant community surrounded by important urban areas, such as Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

 

Davie has experienced tremendous growth since the 1970s. The population surged massively in the four decades leading to 2010. It rose from less than 6,000 in 1970 to approximately 92,000 in 2010. The number of those living here is estimated to have now grown past the 100,000 mark. The city has a relatively young population, with 68 percent of residents aged 44 years or younger as of 2010 census. The median age was calculated at 36 years. Popular communities around Davie include Park City and Long Lake Ranches, a gated equestrian community featuring luxurious single-family homes.

 

The people living here have access to several major thoroughfares. These include Interstate 75, Interstate 595 and the Ronald Reagan Turnpike. The community is located a few minutes away from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Port Everglades, the deepest port in the state, is located in the proximity of the city. This makes Davie a decent place to do business as well. As a result, it is home to numerous businesses, ranging from one-man ventures to Fortune 500 corporations. Andrx Pharmaceuticals has its headquarters here.

 

Davie has numerous public and private schools, fitting of a community this big. These include Davie Elementary School, Nova Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School, Apple Tree Montessori School, St. David Catholic Elementary/Middle School, Indian Ridge Middle School, McFatter Technical High School and Western High School. Described as the "nexus of higher education," the city boasts of several nationally-known institutions of higher learning. They include a campus of the University of Florida, the Central Campus of Broward Community County, Florida Atlantic University, Trinity International University and McFatter Technical College.

 

The city boasts numerous attractions including the 60-acre Flamingo Gardens, home to exotic, rare and native plants. It also hosts the training facility of the Miami Dolphins. Several exciting events and festivals are held here year-round.

 

Davie is simply a wonderful place to live and work. The peaceful community boasts access to several major highways and a superb educational system. It has expansive, green open spaces, many parks and a trail system extending more than 165 miles. It is perfect for those who love the equestrian lifestyle.
