It is located just 12 miles East of Fort Myers. The male to female ratio here is almost exactly 50/50 which is very uncommon. Back in the 1950’s a businessman by the name of Lee Ratner developed what was then known as Lucky Lee Ranch. Lee owned a pest control business and was worried that he was going to lose all his earnings due to the capital gains tax that was prominent during this era. Lee heard that cattle was a good investment for people like him, so he took his money and bought 18,000 acres of land in Eastern Lee County. He struggled for a while because he had no real experience in this field, so he sought help from a few men. He enlisted the help of Gerald H. Gould, who was an advertising executive in Florida, Manuel Riskin who was a CPA from Chicago and Edward Shapiro who had done business in real estate out in California. With the help of these men Lee was able to turn Lucky Lee Ranch into Lehigh Acres. Gerald Gould was the president of the corporation that oversaw development. He started that job sometime in 1954 and when the company was sold in 1972 he stepped down from his position. Since then, Lehigh Acres has grown from 18,000 acres to move than 61,000. This area has more than 1,400 miles of roads as well as an abundant amount of lots that to this day, remain vacant for further development. The entire city of Lehigh Acres is served by LeeTran buses that have several stops within the city limits.
