Ponte Vedra Beach is an upscale, seaside community located in St. Johns County, which is considered Florida’s most affluent county. The discovery of minerals, such as titanium, zircon and rutile, in the area in 1914 kicked off massive growth of the community, which was aptly christened Mineral City. Mineral mining operations were discontinued after the First World War as a result of sliding demand. The National Lead Company bought land in the area and set out to develop something similar to Sea Island, Georgia’s The Cloister.  While researching for a new name for the community at the library in St. Augustine, the name of the Spanish town of Pontevedra was found on an old map at the approximate location of Mineral City. The name, which means “old bridge,” was then adopted for the resort town.
