Magnolia is in Montgomery County, Texas and is part of the Houston – The Woodlands – Sugar Land Metro Area. The population here is very small coming in at just 2,100 people as of 2017. The population here was less than 1,400 back in 2010. According to the United States Census Bureau, Magnolia is a total of 2.8 square miles making this portion of Texas relatively smaller than other towns on the metro area. This small town saw its first settler all the way back in the year 1845. Back then the area right near Magnolia was called “Mink Prairie.” The name came from a man by the name of Mink who built a homestead right outside what is now known as Magnolia. In the year 1850 the name of the town was cut short to just “Mink.” This area started to see development post Civil War when people from Tennessee and Kentucky made their way here. Then in 1902 the International – Great Northern Railroad Burt a railroad North of Mink. So, the people of Mink decided that they wanted to move close to the railroad and moved North of Mink. As time went on the town was renamed after a wealthy landowner who lived in Mink. The new name of the town was “Melton.” So, this town went from “Mink Prairie,” to “Mink” and then to “Melton.” Naturally this got confusing for the postal service in the area who kept confusing the town with another town that’s name was “Milton.” So local officials decided to name the area “Magnolia” after the beautiful trees in the area. As time went on, the area that was once Mink became abandoned. Magnolia then started to come into its own and see further development.
