Winder, Georgia

Winder is a city of over 15,000 in the state of Georgia, located about 20 miles west of Athens and some 50 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. The seat of Barrow County is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, providing seamless access to a good number of the towns and cities in the area. It offers amazing shopping and dining experience and a lot to feast your eyes on across the area, which covers around 13 square miles.

Originally occupied by Creek Indians and known as Snodon, Winder was first settled in 1793 by white settlers who changed the name to The Jug. It was to be renamed Jug Tavern about a decade later, with the first school in the area built at the intersection of Church and West Athens streets. The population of the town gradually grew in the years leading to the Civil War, during which it was mostly untouched. Its rise to prominence took place after the end of the war.

The construction of railroads in the area played a pivotal role in the growth of Winder. Tracks of the Gainsville Midland Railroad arrived in the community in 1883, linking it to Gainsville, Social Circle and stops at Bethlehem and Mulberry. Locals also worked to ensure that the Georgia, Carolina and North Railroad, which was originally scheduled to pass about four miles south of the town, went right through it. Jug Tavern was incorporated in 1884. The City of Winder became the official name of the area in 1894 after approval by the state legislature. It was named for John H. Winder, general manager of Seaboard Railway.

The number of residents in Winder has been steadily growing over the years, rising by more than 50 percent since 2000. There were estimated 15,447 people in the city as of 2015. Residents are relatively young, with median age estimated at 34 years in 2010. The growth of this community has seen some neighboring areas annexed. One of the latest additions is The Gateway, a 130-acre retail development at University Parkway, which is home to Carmike Gateway Cinemas as well as numerous retail establishments and restaurants.

Winder boasts of more than a dozen schools – from elementary schools to high schools – under the supervision of the Barrow County School District. The public school system caters to more than 9,000 students and has over 600 full-time teachers. B.C.C.A Barrow County Christian Academy and Bethlehem Christian Academy provides private education. For higher education, the city is served by the Winder-Barrow Campus of Larnier Technical College.

A major attraction in Winder is Fort Yargo State Park, named for one of the forts constructed by the Humphrey Brothers in the area. The fort, which is said to have been built around 1792 to provide protection from the local Creek Indians, became a state park in 1967. The wooded park includes a 260-acre Marbury Creek Reservoir, Will-A-Way Recreation Area and cottages. It offers a great location for camping, picnics, fishing, boating, hiking and swimming among other interesting activities.

The historic downtown of Winder is home to numerous antique and craft shops as well as fine restaurants and coffee shops. This city has basically everything to appeal to a home buyer. Exciting golf action is available at the Georgia Club or The Chimneys.
