About Lithonia Georgia:
Lithonia is a tiny city in DeKalb County, Georgia. With the population of just under 2,000 and a geographical area covering less than one square-mile, Lithonia is one of the smallest incorporated cities in the state. And yet, it is still considered part of the massive Atlanta metropolitan area as its located just 18 miles east of the downtown core. Lithonia is widely considered to be the heart of the Georgia granite quarrying region. This should come as no surprise as the town’s name actually means ‘city of stone’ in Greek.
Lithonia has a very warm and comfortable climate all year-round, similar to other municipalities in the region. Temperatures in the winter average in the low 50s while in the summer, they can get as high as the low to mid 90s.
In many ways, Lithonia could be considered the town that time forgot. This is not intended to have a negative connotation because, this is actually part of its charm and what makes it different from all the other surrounding cities. For example, the Lithonia historic district is a section of the downtown commercial core and surrounding residential area, where many of the buildings maintain their original architecture dating back to the mid-1800s. Many of these original architectural designs include Folk Victorian, Neo Classic Revival, and English Vernacular Revival just to name a few.
The city still has many landmark structures still standing, some of which date back more than 100 years. Some of these landmark properties include the Masonic Lodge (1916), Lithonia First United Methodist Church (1910), and The Seminary (1895). This easy access to the city’s early days is part of Lithonia’s municipal character.

Arabia Mountain is a large granite formation that is perhaps the biggest geographical signature for this area. Schools in the county are administered through the Dekalb County School District, the third largest in the state with more than 137 schools and 102,000 students. Lithonia, however, has only one school within the city limits, Lithonia Middle School.
