Palmetto is a small coastal city in Manatee County in the state of Florida. According to the United States Census Bureau figures, the city of more than 13,000 residents covers a total area of 4.4 square miles, of which just about 3 percent is water. The establishment of this city is credited to Samuel Sparks Lamb, who is often described as the "Father of Palmetto." He supposedly donated plots of land belonging to him for its creation. A post office under the "Palmetto" name started operating in 1868.
