Cartersville is a city of over 20,000 people positioned a short drive away from Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia. The city was originally settled by people of English origin who named it Birmingham, possibly after the city of the same name back home. But it was incorporated as the town of Cartersville in 1854, named for Colonel Farish Carter of Milledgeville. The community suffered significant damage during the Civil War, but not so much as the-then county seat of Cassville, which was almost entirely obliterated. The highway running across the eastern boundary of Cartersville has exits in different parts of the community. Stretching parallel to I-75 is the older U.S. Highway 41 which runs to Calhoun and Dalton in the north and Marietta in the south. Other notable routes around Cartersville include U.S. Highway 411, State Route 20, State Route 61 and State Route 113. Little wonder it is considered the gateway of the Atlanta metro area. Private schools located here include Lifesong Montessori, Excel Christian Academy and The Trinity School. Georgia Highlands College, Kennesaw State University and Life University are some of the institutions of higher learning that serve the city.
