Key Biscayne is an island location in Miami-Dade County in the state of Florida. Officially known as the Village of Key Biscayne, this naturally-appealing, small community lies on a total area of 1.4 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau. It is located east of Miami and south of Miami Beach. The creation of Key Biscayne as a thriving residential community didn't happen until the four-mile long Rickenbacker Causeway was opened in 1947, connecting Miami to Virginia Key. Earlier development attempts had been met with failures. The causeway connected the village to Miami, setting off massive residential developments in the area. The Matheson family was said to have, in 1940, donated land to Dade County for Crandon Park in exchange for assurance that the island would be connected by a causeway. It later sold its remaining land to developers, who started construction of homes few years after the village was linked to Miami via the new causeway. The Village of Key Biscayne was incorporated in 1991, becoming Miami-Dade County's first municipality in more than 50 years.
Key Biscayne was home to an estimated 12,990 residents as of 2015 – an increase of more than 5 percent above the official figure five years earlier. It had the fourth-highest percentage of Venezuelans living in a U.S. city in 2000, when Cubans constituted more than 15 percent of its residents.
