Learn More About Jackson, Georgia
Jackson is a significantly diverse city in the state of Georgia. It serves as the county seat of the historic Butts County. It lies about 46 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta and 9 miles southwest of Georgia's center of population. It is governed by an elected mayor and an elected city council, whose members represent different districts in the community.
Jackson was founded in 1826 on a 303-acre plot of land, which was divided into squares and lots. John D. Swift of Newton County in the state was the first lot buyer in the community. With a major part of it burnt during General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War, Jackson remained a struggling small community until railroads arrived in the area in the late 19th century. The arrival of the first train there in May 1882 kicked off an era of growth. By the 20th century, industrial textile mills became the major provider of jobs to the locals. The city was a bedroom community by the 1970s.
