Following the discovery of natural sponge beds in the vicinity at the beginning of the century, John Cocoris brought sponge divers from Greece, initially from Aegina and Hydra and then later from Dodecanese islands of Symi, Kalymnos and Halki. The sponge industry grew to become a major maritime industry in Florida and is still active today, although on a smaller scale.
The population of Tarpon Springs was estimated at 24,605 in 2015, representing an expansion of almost 5 percent from the level five years earlier.
