Tarpon Springs, Florida

Sitting on an area of about 17 square miles, of which almost half is water, Tarpon Springs is a quaint waterfront community in Pinellas County, Florida. The city boasts a rich Greek heritage to the extent being here has been described as "visiting Greece without leaving Florida." It stands at an elevation of around 7 meters above sea level and has several bayous linked to the Gulf of Mexico.

Farmers and fishermen first arrived in the area circa 1876. The early settlers were said to have been awed by the abundance in the area of tarpon, which some saw jumping out of the nearby water bodies. This led to the area being named Tarpon Springs. It served as a wintering destination for many wealthy individuals from the North during the 1880s.

Dubbed the "sponge capital of the world," Tarpon Springs relied significantly on the sponge industry during its earlier years. John Cheyney is credited with setting up the first sponge business in the area. Many Key West and the Bahamas natives moved to the community to work in harvesting and processing of sponges in the 1890s. Following the discovery of natural sponge beds in the vicinity at the beginning of the century, John Cocoris brought sponge divers from Greece, initially from Aegina and Hydra and then later from Dodecanese islands of Symi, Kalymnos and Halki. The sponge industry grew to become a major maritime industry in Florida and is still active today, although on a smaller scale.

The population of Tarpon Springs was estimated at 24,605 in 2015, representing an expansion of almost 5 percent from the level five years earlier. People of Greek ancestry constitute a significant portion of the population and Greek is the language mostly spoken at home, after English. The community is said to have the highest percentage of Greek Americans among all cities in the U.S. Its Greek heritage led to establishment of Sister City relationships with the Greek islands of Kalymnos, Symi and Halki as well as Larnaca in Cyprus.

The city's Greek heritage is clearly visible around. Walk along Dodecanese Boulevard in the Greektown Historic District and be treated to Greek gift shops selling souvenirs and natural sponges among others. You will also find the famous Sponge Docks in the area, along the Anclote River. Many restaurants around here serve traditional Greek delicacies and fresh seafood. You may even hear residents greeting one another in Greek when around here.
