Learn More About Sharpsburg, Georgia

Sited on a rolling plateau and covering less than one square mile, Sharpsburg is a very small town in east-central Coweta County, Georgia. The town offers a nice place for those who desire to live in a peaceful rural setting where they can be close to nature. It is located in the immediate northwest of the town of Turin and about six highway miles from the limit of Coweta County with Fayette County.

Established in 1825, Sharpsburg had its original limits reaching to the old depot of Savannah and North Alabama Railroad (now known as the Central of Georgia Railroad). The town was incorporated about 46 years later – in December 1871. It was named in honor of Judge Elias Sharp, one of the pioneer home owners in the community, who helped with its incorporation. Sharpsburg depended heavily on agriculture in the early years, much like other communities in the region around the time. This contributed to make Sharpsburg’s development cyclical in nature. The population dropped as agricultural produce began to lose their importance in the 1920s through the 1930s. Also, increased mechanization of agriculture led to rural-urban migration.

The growth of Sharpsburg has been quite slow over the years, but has been steady since the 1950s. Town population was estimated at 354 in 2015, an increase of almost 4 percent over the total as of 2010 census. One of the benefits of the very low number of residents here is that the spirit of community is better enhanced. You arguably do not have many places better than Sharpsburg if you are interested in living somewhere each person knows almost every other person – this can be helpful for security in a way as well. Somewhat curiously, it appears to have a decently high number of people younger than 45 years, at least going by 2000 census data. The Estates at Parkside Village is a popular community in the tiny town.

Public education is provided by the Coweta County School System. One of the public schools serving the locals is East Coweta High School. Among the options for those families that would prefer private education for their children is Trinity Christian School.

Sharpsburg boasts of being featured in the popular AMC series “The Walking Dead.” Several locations in the tiny town were featured in Season 2 of the sensational series. These included Steve’s Pharmacy, The Carriage Bar and The Greene Family Farm.

The rural community has a lot for residents and visitors to see and do. The over 2,900-acre Chattahoochee Bend State Park at the bend of the Chattahoochee River is a favorite for campers, paddlers and anglers. You also get opportunity to relive the Battle of Brown’s Mill fought in Coweta County during the Atlanta Campaign in the American Civil War.

Considering its small size and population, Sharpsburg makes a great community for people who love serenity. Residents interestingly have access to a decent educational system and there are several exciting activities to be enjoyed in the area. The terrain is not as rugged as many neighboring areas with accentuated Piedmont characteristics.
