Sanibel is both an island and city found in Lee County, Florida. The population here at the time of the 2010 census was 6,469. The population only increased slightly in 2012 when a local survey was taken. At that time the population here was 6,741. As of the most recent non census related survey taken the population had increased slightly with roughly 7,351 residents. Sanibel is part of the Cape Coral – Fort Myers, Florida Metro Statistical Area. Sanibel is often referred to as “Sanibel Island” and is what is known as a barrier island. A barrier island is essentially a coastal landform and a type of dune system that is known for being exceptionally flat or lumpy with areas of sand that were formed by wave and tidal action just parallel to the mainland coast. The warmest time of the year here is in August when the daily average high is about 90 degrees. The cool season on the other hand lasts for less than three months. From mid December until the beginning of March the daily average high is the same as the low for the summer months coming in at 77 degrees. The low for this time is a somewhat chilly 57 degrees. The coolest time of the year here is mid-January. Sanibel receives close to 60 inches of rain per year and absolutely no snow. The Sanibel Public Library was built back in 1994 and was a whopping 19,000 square feet at that time.
