This area of Arizona is located in the Phoenix Metro Area within the Southeastern suburbs. San Tan Valley is referred to as a “bedroom community.” A bedroom community which is also known as a “commuter town” is a town where the residents normally work elsewhere but live, eat and sleep in the smaller town. This also means that these bedroom communities have very little commercial or industrial activity aside from a few small, locally owned businesses. San Tan Valley is an unincorporated area of Arizona that got its name from the nearby San Tan Mountains. Before this, San Tan Valley was referred to as either San Tan Heights, San Tan Foothills, Greater San Stan or just the San Tan Area. Since this area was clearly suffering from an identity crisis many people who lived here did not know to properly address their mail. So residents in the area started using the nearby town “Queen Creek” for their return mailing address. Then in 2009 the United States Postal Service was petitioned to come up with a new name for the town. For some reason the name “Bella Vista” was proposed but local residents did not like that name at all so it was tossed out. Then in a local vote the name San Tan Valley received the most amount of votes and since then, that has been the permanent name for this portion of Arizona.
