Palm Harbor is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place in the northern section of Pinellas County, Florida. The city is located north of downtown St. Petersburg and northwest of Tampa on the Gulf Coast of Florida. It has the cities of Dunedin and Clearwater to the south, Ozona to the west, and Oldsmar to the east.

 

This area was originally known as Sutherland, with some saying the name was inspired by the Duke of Sutherland who visited the area in 1887. Pioneers, however, dismissed the claim saying it was a contraction of Southern Land and Development Company which was responsible for its formation. It was also known as Bay St. Joseph and Yellow Bluff at some points before the present name was finally adopted in 1925. Residents have yet to have an opportunity to determine whether to have the community incorporated. It operates a special taxing district, established by Country Code 85-28, which sees to provision of recreational and library services.

 

There were over 59,000 people and more than 25,000 households in Palm Harbor as of 2000 census. The total housing units in the area was put at 28,044.
