Learn More About Oviedo, Florida

Situated about 20 minutes away from downtown Orlando, Oviedo is a growing city in Seminole County, Florida. The community, which is considered one of the best places anyone can live in the United States, is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is renowned for its historic buildings. It has witnessed a surge in new developments to deal with the influx of new residents in recent decades.

Originally inhabited by Seminoles and African-American Freemen known as Black Seminoles, Oviedo is believed to have first been settled around the period after the end of the American Civil War. The early settlers lived few miles south of Lake Jesup. When filing paperwork needed to set up a post office in the community, an early settler known as Andrew Aulin wanted a name to go with the Spanish origin of the state's name. He chose Oviedo after a city located in northern Spain, the capital of Asturias, and the University of Oviedo. The post office was created in 1879 with Aulin serving as the first postmaster. Oviedo attained the status of a city in 1967 after a special referendum.

The population of this Seminole County city more than doubled between 1990 and 2000 to more than 26,000. It is today estimated around 40,000. Oviedo is a very family-friendly community and almost 71 percent of its residents were married as of 2000 census. The rapid expansion that has been seen in the past three or so decades has raised the need for new developments which may be noticed around the city. The nearby University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Research Park have a role to play in this.

The city dedicated a new downtown development near Oviedo Boulevard in 2015. The project was for what was called "Oviedo on the Park," which would host both residential and commercial buildings. Oviedo already boasts numerous housing developments, including Whispering Woods, Bear Creek, Little Creek, Remington Park and Riverwind Apartments,

There are about a dozen public elementary, middle and high schools around the city. These include John Evans Elementary School, Carillon Elementary School, Marguerite Partin Elementary School, Jackson Heights Middle School and Oviedo High School. The public schools are overseen by Seminole County Public Schools. There are also private schools, such as the Christian-owned The Master's Academy and Tuskawilla Montessori Academy. Oviedo has the University of Central Florida in its proximity and hosts an affiliate of Seminole State College of Florida.

A visit to the historic downtown will thrill you with views of quaint buildings, majority of which were built in the early 20th century or earlier. Many of these are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the First Methodist Church of Oviedo and the Nelson and Company Historic District. The nearby Lake Charm settlement, one of the state's first resorts founded in the 1860s, also features several historic winter homes.

With the Econlockhatchee River and a tributary running across its eastern and southern sections, Oviedo offers several water-related activities, such as boating, fishing and water skiing. Lovers of nature will be thrilled with a walk along the Cross Seminole Trail. Black Hammock Adventures and The Pinball Lounge are two of the other city attractions.

Oviedo is such a great place to live and work. Businessweek named it a great place to raise kids in 2013, while it was listed among Top 10 Towns for Families in the August 2011 issue of Family Circle.
