Lilburn is a nicely-located small city in the Atlanta metropolitan area in the state of Georgia. The Gwinnett County community is placed just about 13 miles away from Sandy Springs and around 20 miles from downtown Atlanta. The location, once described as McDaniel, was originally inhabited by Native Americans. It had its first church in 1823. Lilburn was established by the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1890. It supposedly took its present name after Lilburn Trigg Myers, the general superintendent of the railroad. The town grew and was incorporated as Lilburn in July, 1910.

 

This tiny city has experienced significant growth over the past few decades. The population surged from 1,668 in 1970 to 11,596 as of 2010 census. The figure of those living within city limits has now gone beyond 13,000, with the median age calculated at about 35 years. An estimated 73,000 people are said to live within the 3-mile radius of Lilburn, which has almost 24,000 households. Majority of the housing units here are owner-occupied.

 

Lilburn boasts of somewhat well-educated residents. The percentage of adults who have at least a college degree is higher than the national average. There are numerous public primary and secondary schools in the area, managed by the Gwinnett County Public Schools. They include Lilburn Elementary, Mountain Park Elementary, Camp Creek Elementary, Arcado Elementary, Berkmar Middle School, Lilburn Middle School, Berkmar High School, and Parkview High School. There are also around half dozen private schools in the city. Higher education is provided by the Gwinnett College of Business and Emory University.

 

A major landmark in Lilburn is the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Atlanta, which is situated about two miles southwest of the heart of the city. This is considered the largest Hindu temple in North America and the biggest Swaminarayan temple outside India. It is also the tallest building in Lilburn. If you are up for it, you can go for a free tour of the landmark, said to have been constructed using more than 34,000 hand-carved pieces imported from India.
