Lake Worth, Florida

Situated about 60 miles north of Downtown Miami, Lake Worth is a city of some 37,000 people (as of 2014) in Palm Beach County, Florida. To the north, it is bordered by West Palm Beach and by Lantana to the south. It was named for the body of water on its eastern border, which was originally known as Lake Worth but now called the Lake Worth Lagoon. The lake was named after General William J. Worth of the Second Seminole War fame. The lagoon is not a considered a true one, with the natural freshwater having now been replaced by saltwater as a result of manmade inlets.

The area where Lake Worth stands was originally inhabited by the Jaega Native American tribe. The first settlers, Samuel and Fannie James, a Black couple, arrived in 1885 having made a claim for land holdings in the area under the Homestead Act. Before its present name was chosen, town developer Bryant & Greenwood had proposed Lucerne as the name. But that suggestion was rejected by the United States Postal Service due to the existence of a Lake Lucerne post office in Dade County. The population of Lake Worth grew rapidly from 38 in July 1912 to 308 by the end of the year. It was incorporated as a town in June 1913.

Lake Worth is a part of the West Palm Beach Metropolitan Area. Just like several other places in Palm Beach County, the city's postal address is used by a larger unincorporated area to the west. The population of both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of Lake Worth is estimated at about 190,000. The three most-spoken languages in the city is English, Spanish and French Creole. People living here are relatively younger, compared to state average. The median age of residents is about 36 years, compared to Florida's 41.5 years. Median household income stood at around $35,000 in 2013.

Billed as "Where the Tropics Begin," Lake Worth boasts of many plants you'd expect to find mainly in tropical countries. Some of the more popular of these plants include many palm species, including coconut palm, mahogany and royal poinciana. Several species of eucalyptus, avocado and African tulip tree may also be found in the city.

Downtown Lake Worth is a major attraction to both residents of South Florida and tourists. The area boasts two main streets – Lucerne Avenue and Lake Avenue – and many historic buildings. In recent years, it has grown to become a lively entertainment center. This is where you will find the Lake Worth Historical Museum and the Lake Worth Playhouse.

The city is home to a large Finnish population. It boasts the second-largest number of Finnish people in diaspora. When combined with the Finnish community in neighboring Lantana, you have the biggest Finnish community in the U.S. One of the annual festivals in Lake Worth, Finlandia Week, is a celebration of the local Finnish community.

Another major festival here is the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival. The scenic Lake Worth Municipal Golf Course is also a major attraction in the city.

Lake Worth boasts a dynamic downtown with awesome entertainment to relish. It offers a wide selection of interesting events, art galleries, historic buildings, antique shops, and specialty shops, among others. It provides easy access to amazing Palm Beaches.
