Learn More About Kingsland, Georgia

Named “Lovetown USA” by Oprah Winfrey, Kingsland is a city in southwestern Camden County, Georgia which offers so much to delight in. The community of more than 16,000 people is located just off Interstate 95, which provides it access at four exits, and lies north of the Florida line. About 34 miles to the north of the city is Brunswick and 36 miles to the south is Jacksonville.

The founding of Kingsland is credited to the King family, which bought a wide expanse of land in the area west of St. Marys in 1788. It was initially known as Woodland, then a plantation. The first passenger train arrived in Camden County via the area on the Christmas Day of 1893. The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad, precursor of CSX Railroad, decided to name it “Kings Land” because the only property there at the time was the home built by William King, great-grandson of John King. The railroad brought many people to the area. The city was incorporated in 1908 and its name is believed to have been combined into a single word around this period.

Kingsland was estimated to be home to 16,487 people in 2015, representing a rise of more than 50 percent above the level in 2000. This is a family-friendly community that appears to also be home to a high number of young individuals. More than 80 percent of the people living there as of 2000 census were not older than 44 years of age, with the median age calculated at just about 28 years.

The Camden County city is served by about a dozen public primary schools, including Kingsland Elementary, Crooked River Elementary, St. Marys Elementary, St. Marys Middle School, and Camden County Middle School. Secondary education is provided at Camden County High School, while higher education can be accessed at College of Coastal Georgia.

The terrain features rivers meandering through thick marshlands and lakes teeming with wildlife. Residents can always have an exciting time outdoors whenever they feel like with many places of interest around. One of the main attractions around Kingsland is the pristine Cumberland Island, where residents may feel like they are back in an area from the 19th century. Animals such as horses, armadillos, alligators, minks and deer may be seen roaming freely on the island, whose visitors also have opportunity to explore the ruins of Dungeness, the once glorious Carnegie Estate.

In addition to its gifts of nature, Kingsland also offers something notable in terms of history. Its downtown district is in the National Register of Historic Places, in part as a result of the city's conscious efforts to preserve its heritage. The charming appearance of the area back in the 1920s and 1930s has been further accentuated through a later project executed by the city.

Kingsland is a community for those interested in living somewhere with amazing opportunities to explore the wonders of nature. It has many natural attractions and the people here enjoy a variety of interesting outdoor activities for leisure. Golf is one of the activities that may be enjoyed around the area's tidal creeks.
