Learn More About Dunedin, Florida

Lying on the west coast of Central Florida, Dunedin is a pleasant city in the heart of the Suncoast in Pinellas County. The waterfront community, which boasts a rich Scottish heritage, offers awesome views all around. It has some of the world's most beautiful beaches. More than 60 percent of its total area is made up of water, according to the United States Census Bureau. It is bordered on the north by Palm Harbor, on the east and south by Clearwater, and on the west by the Gulf of Mexico.

Settled by Scottish families in the 19th century, Dunedin has its name derived from Dun Eideann, which is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland's capital, Edinburgh. It was incorporated as a town in 1899 and is considered the oldest town located south of Cedar Key. The town grew to become a major seaport and trading center in Florida; it was said to have had the state's biggest fleet of sailing vessels at a time. The City of Dunedin was incorporated in 1925.

This community has a subtropical climate and natural, wooded areas. It offers scenic views. The natural appeal and small-town charm of Dunedin are certainly major attractions to many of its more than 36,000 residents. It is one of just a handful of open waterfront communities - from Sarasota to Cedar Key – that offers unobstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway, and even farther areas. Residents also enjoy views of Clearwater Beach, St. Joseph Sound and Caladesi Island from Edgewater Drive, south of downtown. Another appealing thing about the city is that it is virtually devoid of the congestions that are witnessed at many resort towns in Florida.

For the education of the young ones, Dunedin has about half a dozen public schools within its limits. These include Dunedin Elementary School, Curtis Fundamental Elementary School, Dunedin Highland Middle School and Dunedin High School. The public school system is supervised by Pinellas County Schools. The community has two charter schools – Athenian Academy of Pinellas and Academie DaVinci – and about three private schools. Dunedin, which hosted the main campus of Schiller International University until July 2006, boasts of fairly well-educated residents.

The sister city to the Scottish city of Stirling is very proud of its ties to Scotland. The annual Dunedin Highland Games sees Scottish clans troop into the city for the exciting event. Another popular annual event here is the Mardi Gras celebration.

Dunedin is actively ensuring its residents have a great time during their leisure. It provides inexpensive recreation programming, with facilities available for people of different age groups. Recreational facilities include the Highlander Pool Complex, Dunedin Activity Center and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center. The Dunedin Country Club offers a nice place to enjoy golf action. There are many community baseball, soccer, hockey and softball teams for residents.

Boasting a rich Scottish heritage, Dunedin is a community that offers that amazing small town charm and a relaxed lifestyle. It has some of the best beaches around and a scenic waterfront extending about four miles. The quality of life in this waterfront community is simply amazing.
