Douglasville has an area of approximately 22 square miles, delimited by Lithia Springs, Hiram and Villa Rica.

The city was founded in 1874, when the railroad reached that part of the land. It was formerly known as Skint Chestnut, due to a big tree used by the Native American Indians to landmark the area. The tree had its bark stripped in order to stand out when someone was looking for it - thus the name. The town only changed to Douglasville a few months after its foundation, named after Senator Stephen A. Douglas.
