DeLand is located in the state of Florida. It is a city of about 30,000 people, according to 2015 estimates. It is positioned around halfway between Daytona Beach and Orlando and serves as the seat of Volusia County. It is classified into the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Founded in 1876, DeLand was originally called Persimmon Hollow after wild persimmon trees growing around the area. It was founded by Henry Addison DeLand, who arrived here in 1876 with the intention of creating an agricultural and tourism town. The baking soda mogul renamed the area after himself. The city was incorporated in 1882 and became the county seat about five years later.

DeLand has multiple elementary and middle schools. These include Blue Lake Elementary, Citrus Grove Elementary, Children's House Montessori, St. Peters Catholic School, Saint Barnabas Episcopal School, and DeLand Middle School. There is one high school named Deland High School. Public primary and secondary schools in the city are overseen by Volusia County Schools. DeLand is also home to Stetson University, the oldest private college in Florida. Daytona State College and Florida Technical College also provide higher education in the area.
The city offers numerous recreation options. In addition to enjoying local school sports, you can engage in skydiving in the area. DeLand has been dubbed the world's skydiving capital by some people, with many skydiving companies based here. Skydive DeLand holds that exhilarating experience when all you need to feel is an adrenaline rush. The skydiving industry contributes decent amount of jobs in the area.

Locations such as Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach also make for nice places to enjoy a great time in the sun.
