Coral Springs is a vibrant city located in northeastern Broward County, Florida. Officially known as the City of Coral Springs, the master-planned community is a major city in the Miami metropolitan area, which boasts total residents of more than six million as of 2015. Coral Springs used to be a part of the 20,000 acres of marshy land bought by Henry Lyons in the early 1900s. Several floods experienced in the area led to the creation of the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control, precursor of the South Florida Water Management District, in 1947. The land was drained and used for farming and cattle rearing afterwards.

 

Following the Second World War, a South Florida housing boom saw Coral Ridge Properties developing interest in this area. The company bought land from Lyons to develop this master-planned city whose charter was granted in July 1963. The name “Coral Springs,” derived from the name of the city’s developer, was selected after several others, including Pompano Springs and Curran Village, had been rejected. In spite of its name, the community is said to have no springs. It is today home to some 130,000 people.
