The City of Miramar is a key city in Broward County, Florida situated along the border of Miami-Dade County. It lies about 20 miles north of Miami and is a principal city in the Miami metropolitan area. Its neighboring cities in clockwise direction are Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and West Part. The city has Fort Lauderdale approximately 14 miles to its northeast. It covers a total area of more than 31 square miles, with almost 6 percent of this comprised of water. Miramar ranks among the biggest in Florida in terms of size, although a very large portion of its land area remains undeveloped due to growth control.

Founded by A.L. Mailman, Miramar was originally intended to function as a bedroom community for neighboring big cities, such as Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The first 56 homes built by Mailman in the early 1950s sold like hot cakes as a result of the budget-friendly costs of the homes. The prices of and in the area were also easy on the pocket. The city grew rapidly and was incorporated in May 1955. It was named after a Cuban city near Havana where its founder maintained a summer home. The name means something similar to “View of the Sea” in Spanish. Miramar has expanded tremendously from an original size of slightly less than 3 square miles.

The city has seen massive influx of people over the years. From less than 200 residents at incorporation in 1955, it rapidly grew to 5,485 in 1960 and 23,997 by 1970. Today, Miramar has an estimated population of about 140,000 people. It is a great city for families, young professionals and businesses. The median age of residents was calculated at 32 years in the 2000 census, suggesting a young population. It had the fifth-highest percentage of Jamaican residents in the country at the time.

Miramar’s most popular communities include Sunset Lakes, Silver Lakes and similarly-named Miramar. Sunset Lakes is a cool, master-planned community of almost 2,000 homes and features mind-blowing, green landscaping and dazzling blue lakes. Silver Lakes is another beautiful community around here that will appeal to nature enthusiasts with its rich wildlife and dedication to preservation of the local natural resources.

Miramar has a strong local economy and is home to several big companies. It hosts Spirit Airlines headquarters, which was moved here from Eastpointe, Michigan in 1999. JL Audio and Chetu Inc. are two of the other companies with their headquarters in the city. City of Miramar, Premier Beverage, Comcast of South Florida, Humana Medical Plans and Royal Caribbean Cruises were the top employers in the area as of 2010.

One of the good things Miramar does not have in short supply is schools. It boasts numerous schools, including elementary, middle, high and trade schools. There are both public and private schools in the city. Public education is administered by Broward County Public Schools. For higher education, the community is served by Broward College, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University.

With a decent local economy, excellent school district and great ambiance, Miramar is a wonderful place to live and work. It has a diverse population and residents enjoy access to numerous parks, state-of-the-art sports facilities and amazing local attractions.
