Learn More About Key Biscayne, Florida

Key Biscayne is an island location in Miami-Dade County in the state of Florida. Officially known as the Village of Key Biscayne, this naturally-appealing, small community lies on a total area of 1.4 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau. It is located east of Miami and south of Miami Beach. It has Crandon Park on its northern edge, the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on the southern, and Biscayne Bay on the western limits. It is home to about 13,000 people.

The creation of Key Biscayne as a thriving residential community didn't happen until the four-mile long Rickenbacker Causeway was opened in 1947, connecting Miami to Virginia Key. Earlier development attempts had been met with failures. The causeway connected the village to Miami, setting off massive residential developments in the area. The Matheson family was said to have, in 1940, donated land to Dade County for Crandon Park in exchange for assurance that the island would be connected by a causeway. It later sold its remaining land to developers, who started construction of homes few years after the village was linked to Miami via the new causeway. The Village of Key Biscayne was incorporated in 1991, becoming Miami-Dade County's first municipality in more than 50 years.

Key Biscayne was home to an estimated 12,990 residents as of 2015 – an increase of more than 5 percent above the official figure five years earlier. That number is likely to have crossed the 13,000 mark by now. The community is home to highly diverse people and many individuals born outside the country. It had the fourth-highest percentage of Venezuelans living in a U.S. city in 2000, when Cubans constituted more than 15 percent of its residents. The island community is also home to a sizeable number of Colombians, Peruvians, Brazilians and Nicaraguans. It is a great place in the United States to learn Spanish from native speakers, if you are interested.

There is also Grand Bay, which offers awesome amenities and spectacular views of ocean waters. Middle school students attend either Key Biscayne School or Ponce de Leon Middle School in Coral Gables. High school students attend Coral Gables High School. There are also private schools around the village. Public education is administered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Key Biscayne is simply an amazingly beautiful place to live. It offers access to some of the best, well-maintained beaches in South Florida and lies just a short drive away from Miami. Tucked between two major parks, the village provides residents with superb opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
